Pirates tire of inept Morris

Management met shortly after Matt Morris' latest implosion, six runs over 1 2/3 innings that led to an 8-4 loss to the Phillies, and two options were believed to have been laid out: 1. Move Morris to the bullpen and replace him in the rotation with reliever Phil Dumatrait. 2. Release Morris, even though it would mean eating the remainder of his $10,037,283 salary, as well as the $1 million buyout of his 2009 option, all of it guaranteed. That would be slightly more than $10 million.

I wonder how it feels to give a man $10,037,283 for 22.1 IP and a 9.67 ERA?

April 27, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Just one of many reasons the Bucs are losing.

April 27, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Trade him to SF for Barry Zito?

April 27, 2008  11:36 AM ET

The new management can be excused for the terribly poor decision made to acquire Morris that the past managers and present owners approved last year. These owners deserve what they suffer as economic consequences, but unfortunately the current team and fans will suffer with them. The owners should in turn do the fans and team a good deed and sell the team to someone with the wherewithal and willingness to spend some money to improve things. I hope home attendance in Pittsburgh will fall to a point that will demonstrate that the sale of the team is a requirement for the present owners.

Didn't everyone outside of Pirate management know this befoer they traded for him??

April 27, 2008  12:16 PM ET

454,175.70 per inning of work so far. Nice payout.

April 27, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Considering the money involved, the best bet is move him to the bullpen and hope he can turn things around.

April 27, 2008  01:33 PM ET

they released him and will eat his salary , someone will grab him and give him a chance...... league minnimum and if he sucks bye bye , its worth the risk for alot of teams for that price , or throw him in the bull pen

I really hate to see it happen to him because when he was with Cards he was a fan favorite. Then he left and never was the same player he once was.

April 27, 2008  08:28 PM ET

Good luck Matt. You were always a class act.

The injury in 2003 changed everything.

April 27, 2008  09:43 PM ET

What is St. Louis traded a young outfielder (they have a plethora of them) to Pittsburgh for Morris? Perhaps a pitcher such as Brad Thompson? The Bucs could agree to pay about two-thirds of his salary, and Matt could go home to the only place he had real success.

April 27, 2008  11:46 PM ET

He wouldn't work for the Cardinals anymore. They have enough pitching problems as is. Also I don't think he left on the best of terms - he was upset that the Cards didn't give him the 10 million dollars a year that pitchers were commanding at that time which today seems like a steal.

April 28, 2008  05:25 AM ET

I would keep wheeling him out there. The franchise can make him the posterboy for all the problems and make the coming 85 or 90 plus loss season less glaring. My problem is that they didn't get Hillary to offer to save small market teams when she needed the votes.

It's a shame to see Matty struggle so mightily. You know this lack of performance just eats at him.....he is a class act and was a great comptetitor as a Card. I wish him the best....

C-Note... Morris may not have left on the best of terms, but the Cards were trying to get him back last season when he got dealt to the Pirates. That's why Joel Peniero wears #35, The equipment manager already had Morris's old number ready to go. Morris went to the Pirates and the Cards ended up "settling on" Peniero... So I wouldn't be totally surprised to see the Cards give Matty Mo another shot.
