Did Cowboys draft wrong RB?

You don't draft a complementary player in the first round when you have an opportunity to select a franchise back. Ever. But that's what the Cowboys did Saturday by drafting Felix Jones instead of Rashard Mendenhall. It's a decision Jerry Jones, Wade Phillips and whoever else helped make it will regret. Mendenhall, 18 pounds heavier and a shade faster (4.45-4.46) than Jones, is capable of being a featured back. You can build an offense around him. That's why the Steelers were calling him on his cell phone as Roger Goodell was announcing the Cowboys' pick.

As the Steelers were the benefactor the Boy's decision, I certainly hope so.

Report Offensive CommentRM has the same positive qualities as MB III. He has the same negatives as JJ. Felix positive qualities are the ones that the Boys thought they had in JJ, plus he's a good return man.
Although having two power runners sounds good, I think adding Felix will give the team a very good and balanced atack. His cutback abilities alone will justify this choice and make you forget about his 40 yard time.

Report Offensive CommentI agree Imis. Mendenhall is a bruising back and we already have one of those.

Report Offensive CommentMendenhall is more like a "Bus"-back: in between the hashmarks. Jones can break it outside. Both fit the respective schemes. What's the problem?

Report Offensive CommentI love the Mendenhall selection for the Steelers...I think he is going to make an instant impact for the Steelers complimenting Willie perfectly. His selection will help to prolong Willie Parker's career because Parker won't be getting as beat up as he has been the last two years with his carry numbers going down with Mendenhall. Furthermore, I believe Davenport is as good as gone with Mendenhall's selection because he fills no area of need for the Steelers now!

This is very true +40. I mean, come on, some of the lower ranked teams had great drafts. Why not a thread or two about them. I just might generate some activity if someone actually sees their team in print.

Report Offensive CommentThe draft is about what an individual team needs. So far, I'd say Pittsburgh addressed their most pressing needs better than any other team. Mendenhall was a great pick, considering that they had to turn to Davenport last year after Parker was injured. Sweed was a great pick because he fulfills the wishes of what Big Ben wantedall along, a tall, athletic WR.

Report Offensive CommentDallas got the right guy in Jones. He's a HR hitter that's the perfect compliment to Barber's bruising style.

Report Offensive CommentJerry Jones is the most marketing minded of NFL owners. Why would he prefer a player from Arkansas? Well, first, he went there, so he's obviously got a soft spot for Razorbacks, and that should help Arkansas' future recruiting efforts. ("Play with us, and Jerry Jones will see you from our sidelines.") Indeed, JJ probably saw Felix play up close a number of times.
This move also helps build Cowboy appeal in their neighboring state, while drafting Mendenhall wouldn't make a difference in Illinois. Why would anyone care about claiming the Arkansas market? Oh, there's that little company based in Bentonville... And God forbid that his home state should gravitate toward the Saints or the Titans. I'm sure it's only a trivial factor, but it all adds up.

Report Offensive Comment"The statement, "It's a decision Jerry Jones, Wade Phillips and whoever else helped make it will regret," is a bold one and is one this writer will probably regret.
When it comes to Dallas, most sports writers have an opinion about everything and anything they do, the future be dammed. They always dissappear on the subject when they are proven wrong. Remember getting T.O. (he will implode the team), trading for Leonard Davis (they trashed them for months, he goes to the Pro Bowl) and so on, and on.
As a Dallas fan I am no longer amazed (actually like it!) at this weakness in human nature. It is what it is. Wouldn't change Dallas superb achievements one way or another.

As a Dallas fan I am no longer amazed at this weakness in human nature. No one's opinion will change Dallas superb achievements over 40 years one way or another. Nor what this team will accomplish for year's to come. In fact it helps them maintain an 'Us vs.them' mentality, becuase is just that.

Report Offensive CommentFelix Jones came from nothing and has not forgotten where he came from. The guys is a great person with great work ethic. Played second fiddle to D-Mac with no whining. Fast, Fast, Fast. No baggage. Maybe he can teach Owens a thing or fifty. Nice pick dallas. You won't regret it. Probably better pick than D-Mac.

Report Offensive Commentthe last I checked--mendenhall had a faster time in the 40 than felix; did anyone watch the usc/illinois rose bowl game last year? both players are good/potential great players, but you don't draft to compliment; you draft the best player available.
while we were squandering picks on complimentary picks, we should have gone out and drafted a safety to challenge for roy william's job.
It's a Cowboy Nation! | 04/27/08, 01:35 PM
Report Offensive CommentThe Cowboys don't need to draft a safety. If they move Henry to safety, they still have 3 CBs to play hopefully (Jenkins, Newman, P. Jones) And they drafted two CBs last year. And still have Pat Watkins back there. Now, as far as Mendenhall and Jones, they made the right move. Jones was an All-American as a returner as a freshman. And he's used to being a 2nd option at RB. And don't make it seem like Jerry Jones picked him because he went to Ark. How many players has Jerry Jones drafted that went to Ark? I believe this is his 1st..
