Bears draft Benson's replacement

If Cedric Benson wasn't already a bona fide bust before Saturday, the Bears declared him thus by using their second-round pick, No. 44 overall, to select his replacement, Tulane running back Matt Forte. Forte, general manager Jerry Angelo repeated several times, is a three-down back. And Benson? ''Maybe he's not the featured back we thought he'd be ...'' Angelo admitted, distancing himself from a guy he used to habitually protect. ''When we thought we were starting to see a little something, then he breaks his ankle. I felt we needed to make sure that we protected that position.''

they needed a QB more than a RB. They should have drafted Brian Brohm.

Da' Bears are irrelevant. Why is this even a story?

This from a guy's whose team hasn't got a QB or a GM for that matter. (I presume he's from Detroit.)

Benson might as well check out the flights back to TX. He's finished.

Can`t blame him for taking a quility player reguardles.

Grossedout9\

I can't blame 'em for taking a "quility player" either. I wish they'd take a quality one though. (Man, "a" is so far away from "i" on the keyboard, um um.)

April 27, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Bears need a QB. Brohm would have been perfect. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

April 27, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Does not solve the QB situation. It only puts it off for one more year. They should have taken a chance on a QB...

April 27, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Look for Bears to draft a QB - please not Woodson! - in the next rounds. (PS Bears needs were more immediate on line and at back. Plus, the idiot management is still in love with Rexy.)

April 27, 2008  11:35 AM ET

(Why they didn't draft Dan Connor to replace Hunter Hillenmeyer - a mid-range player - to make the the LB corps elite - is beyond me.)

April 27, 2008  12:10 PM ET

If Pick #3 is a QB, it should Ainge or even Booty instead of Woodson.

April 27, 2008  12:58 PM ET

This is thier savior? They should have taken Brohm, but the Packers again got the edge on them once again! The Bears just suck on draft day!

Da Bears just suck

Grossman and Orton again this year. Ha....

Got to agree with you here Hillary and lazy. The problem with the Bears' "braintrust" is that it lacks "brain," "trust" me. Another wasted year and a vote of confidence for a guy who hasn't earned it. Why doesn't Angelo and Rex just run off to Mexico and get married?

April 27, 2008  06:33 PM ET

They should try the two back system that they used with Jones and Benson two seasons ago. It seemed to get the best out of Benson and it will allow the Bears not to wear down their new toy.

April 27, 2008  06:39 PM ET

They could've had Ainge (okay, not so good) or Booty (much better) in late rounds and kept drafting players that won't be around five minutes after camp starts. Angelo has got to go. He is a USDA dope.

c note

Jones by far did the heavy lifting during that campaign. In fact, as far as Jones and the team was concerned there was only one back to depend upon. And of course the Bears traded him. Professional clucks.

I can't disagree with the fact that Jones was the better player amongst the two but you know they won't cut Benson like they should so they might as well use both backs so as to keep the rookie fresh.

do you forget that Jones didn't want to be in Chicago and asked for the trade...the bears sought a highly promised RB in Benson and gave Jones what he wanted...trade
it just so happened that Benson had dismal numbers...but then again how well could L.T. run behind that Bears O-line? If you know Grossman or Oton will QB, then your playing a majority of run which defenses will set up for...
