Eagles pass on Saints trade

Posted: Monday April 28, 2008 06:54AM ET

The one thing you thought you knew going into the draft was that the Birds were going to trade Lito Sheppard, probably for something like the second- and fifth-round draft choices the Falcons got when they traded DeAngelo Hall. Team sources had hinted the offers were in that range; one report said the Eagles were deciding last week whether to accept the Saints' second-round pick, 40th overall. Well, the Saints used that pick to draft a cornerback, Tracy Porter. And suddenly, it was yesterday evening, and Andy Reid was explaining in his postdraft wrapup press conference that the offers this weekend for Sheppard were "not significant ones."

It would be a formidable secondary. Maybe one of the 3 will get moved to safety in a nickel situation or the like. It's not like the Birds went out and got an instant impact guy at that spot.

They messed up. If he is unhappy it will be a long season.

Report Offensive Comment

They should have taken whatever value they could for him.

Report Offensive Comment

They aren't keeping him. He won't show up anyway. At least he'll be holding out as a non-starter.

Report Offensive Comment

Not sure why they wouldnt take the 40th pick for him..... could have gotten someone good!

Report Offensive Comment

I hope we keep him in the mix. Maybe he will take this year as an opportunity to show other clubs he can stay healthy for a full year and play at the high level that has made him a Pro Bowler in the past. Man...Imagine tha...............win win for us regardless.

Eagles are going to end up letting Lito go and walk away emptyhanded.

It looks more and more like that is what will happen. That or he will sit out this year on the bench and they will get far less for him next year.

Philly is it's own worst enemy. They choose not to pay anyone big money, and they wind up drafting extremely well. So they have a bunch of talent who are all underpaid, are well below the cap so they alienate the fan base when they don't go out to get free agents to help, and when the 5th rounder players who make their first pro-bowl realize exactly how underpaid they are, they start to make some small noise.

All in all, it is the right way to run a franchise, but they won't win a super bowl with that strategy. You need Big time playmakers, veteran leadership, and a bit of luck. It also helps if you division is awful and you can walk all over them.

philly needs a new qb

McNabb is fine. He's better than alot of the QB's in the league and definitely better than what was in the draft this year.

Report Offensive Comment

Smart move by the Eagles not trading him. I think the best of Asante has already been seen especially with all that money to keep track of.

In addition to Dunkin' Donuts, there are a LOT of fish restaurants all over New England. And Irish and sports bars everywhere in that one city with Ted William's tunnel. I can get a buzz just thinking about Ted Williams.

The Eagles will not let Lito walk. He has 4 years left on his deal. Let him sit, they obviously don't need him right now. Have fun paying 14K a day in fines.

It's still early, something will get done. Especially with the extra 1st rounder from the Panthers for next year. That could really help in a deal for a top-flight WR.

Report Offensive Comment

2nd and 5th rounder and they passed on it? The igles blindly believed him to be worth a 2nd and a 3rd or a 1st and change. Sorry, the guys decent, but he is no way an elite corner.

Report Offensive Comment

Seems to be at trend to let people WHO HAVE FAT CONTRACTS sit, rather than negotiate or trade..... what a concept!

AngryCorgi - Learn to read. They weren't offered a second and fifth, they were looking for a second and a fifth. They were offered only a second. And quite frankly, I don't think they were a whole lot of players in this draft who were worth, by themselves, Lito Sheppard.
