McGrady calls out Adelman

The Rockets had just lost to the Jazz 86-82 on Saturday night when Tracy McGrady publicly called out coach Rick Adelman. McGrady was asked how Mehmet Okur had been allowed to grab a key rebound on a missed free throw with around six seconds remaining and the Rockets down two. When the shot went up, Carl Landry and McGrady had inside position on Okur. First, McGrady critiqued Landry. "I hit the ball off the glass, and Carl just mistimed it," McGrady said. If he had to say something, it might be about how he didn't block out Okur, or how he should have grabbed the rebound. Instead, he pointed to Adelman. "That was the point where Dikembe (Mutombo) and those guys should have been in the game, because we would have called a timeout had we gotten the rebound." Moments earlier, Adelman had second-guessed himself about not having Mutombo in the game. He said he had considered it, but that he decided to stick with his "two most athletic guys." Ironically, Adelman had used much of his news conference to defend McGrady.

oh dang dat sucks

This is just frustration. McGrady knows that, without Yao this season, the Rockets don't have much of a chance to get out of the first round, which will all be put on him again. Adelman, who has his own history of not being able to get over the hump in the playoffs, is just doing what he used to doing. Being outcoached while his team is outplayed.

thats why T-mac will never be a champion...period

April 28, 2008  08:31 AM ET

First off, Yao is injured. Second, you can't put yourself in a position where it becomes this close. Look at the stats

Tracy McGrady.

9-25 FGM-A
1-2 3PM-A
4-8 FTM-A

Rockets together (including McGrady)

26-79 FGM-A
7-22 3PM-A
17-25 FTM-A

I don't think that is considered calling out your coach. He said the same thing that Adelman was saying.

April 28, 2008  08:44 AM ET

This article is much about nothing. He's saying things that were clear to see in the game. As much as T-Mac loses in the 1st round, he always stands up and doesn't usually try to blame others. Last year when he lost, he sat at the podium and cried when he could have been mad and blamed others.

April 28, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Tracy McGrady apparently can do no wrong and his poop smells like cherry blossom.

April 28, 2008  09:24 AM ET

The Rockets are simply undermanned against Utah. It's noone's fault, but without Yao, they aren't going to be able to get it done. MCGrady is just frustrated that once again he is one and done.

April 28, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Bottom line is that for all the talent you posess, you are not a true superstar
- quit trying to put the blame on others

you are 6-9 tracy....not 5-10, you should be able to box ANYONE out, but you are lazy & play no defense. That is why you have NEVER won a 1st round series. Facts are Facts-

April 28, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Me-Mac is a whiny little female dog who refuses to take responsibility for anything that he does wrong. It's always somebody else who didn't come through. Great players carry their teams through the playoffs (or at least to the second round). Do you think Lebron's team was good enough to go to the finals last year. He carried them there and if they lost, he shouldered the blame. That's the difference between a real superstar and a wannabe. If Me-Mac hadn't wanted out of Orlando (because the GM didn't call him on his birthday), he could now be teamed up with Dwight Howard. This should be a wake up call to other so called superstars (see Jason Kidd), the grass is not always greener.

I'm sorry Tracey. I'm usually on board with you, but this time... Nah!. "Most" fundamentally sound basketball players know to block out on any shot. I wonder how Shane Battier would have responded in the same position. No Tracey. No excuses. You didn't get the job done regardless of who was in the game. I hate to paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, but "You play the game with the team you have on the floor".

Eeewwww!!! That feels nasty. Yuck!

April 28, 2008  10:17 AM ET

He has some nerve calling out Coach Adelman when he has failed to deliver every time he's in the playoffs. Get a life T-Mac! You'll never get out of the first round.

Vocal Point,

Very funny paraphrasing.

April 28, 2008  10:47 AM ET

with 6 secs left, you want guys who can score a put back, not just get the rebound. Also, Okur is not exactly Bill Russell on the glass. No issue with Adelman's non-substitution. big issue with McGrady who cements his reputation for wilting in the spotlight. Blaming the coach is real weak here after another lame performance.

April 28, 2008  10:57 AM ET

This is not the same team that won all those games in a row this season. McGrady deserves some of the blame and so does Adelman but the fact is this they are playing a better team in the Jazz and must realize they never really had a great chance of making the next round.

April 28, 2008  10:58 AM ET

We're talking about Mutombo today... not Mutombo of eight years ago..... nice second guess..... the kind you do when you're frustrated & about to lose.

April 28, 2008  11:01 AM ET

YOUR TEAMMATE HAD THE REBOUND DUMBASS! T-Mac tipped it away from him. If he'd concentrated on his own side of the lane Houston would have had the ball. Classic fight-your-own-teammate-for-a-rebound mistake.

it seems he will NEVER develop the attitude of a winner. Actually, he makes dumb and selfish comments on a regular basis.
