Will Cuban blow up Mavs?

When the Mavericks lose this series to New Orleans -- Game 5 seems like a pretty sure bet to me -- their status as an elite team will officially end. As it should. Then Mark Cuban can spend the off-season blowing up this team that has a penchant for quitting. Did you forget its 25-point loss to Golden State in the final game of the first-round loss last season? Perhaps Cuban will fire Avery Johnson. Maybe he'll deal Josh Howard. Or Jason Terry.

I know the Mavs are down 3-1 and are facing elimination, but WOW. "When the Mavericks lose this series to New Orleans...". When? When? Way to have faith in your team.

Hoffa - while you'd like to see more support, the Mavs have done little to earn faith from it's followers that they can dig themselves out of a 3-1 hole and make it to the second round.

It's one thing to jump off the bandwagon when the team is down, it's another to simply be realistic of their chances.

I found it funny how a fan got into it last night with Cuban. He was probably demading his money back for this pathetic teams play during the playoffs. Yeah I think they are done but do I think they will blow this team up? No. They have to much invested and who says any teams will take Josh Howard now that he has a history of being a pot head. They have to much money invested in guys that they cant do anything with. I think Avery will be fired though and deservingly so.

Another thing that pisses me off about this team is how when they have a questionable foul called on them, they show no anger. They just take it like a man. When Jason Kidd was kicked out of the game he just walked off the court without saying anything. Do you think Rasheed Wallace would have just walked off the court. THe mavs need to get some guys with fire in their eyes that can get there team fired up.

April 28, 2008  08:16 AM ET

It is easier to change the coach than the roster. Many coaches have already invested too much and they want a simple solution.

April 28, 2008  08:18 AM ET

That Kidd trade sure backfired.

April 28, 2008  08:36 AM ET

P360, while that may be true, a win in New Orleans makes the series 3-2 and heading back to Dallas for a game 6. It's close, but far from over.

April 28, 2008  08:39 AM ET

The Mavs have nice pieces but they're just missing something. It's not even about them being soft, it's just something they lack. They don't have a true go-to player. It's hard for a jump shooter to be your go to guy in the clutch. I like Dirk, but he just can't take over games when he has to.

April 28, 2008  08:48 AM ET

We are seeing Jason Kidd - one of the all-time great point guards - grow old rght before our eyes. He simply can no longer keep up with the new wave of lightning quick guards.

It happens to the best of them - Cousy, Isiah Thomas, Earl Monroe, Tim Hardaway, Gary Payton, Kevin Johnson, Walt Frazier, John Stockton, Oscar Robertson, Tiny Archibald, etc. Sadly, it is now Kidd's turn.

Next up - Allen Iverson.

I'm not so sure Avery should be fired. I could go either way and not be upset. I think Avery is an awesome coach. People say he capitalized on everything Nellie built but the truth is that he transformed them from a straight run and gun team to a team with discipline and technique. One look at the Warriors will show you that they were/are way better off than Nellie. No run and gun team will win the championship. Phoenix is the best example of this at the moment as they prepare to be ousted by the Spurs.
As for what I would do... I'm not sure how much they can do. The big disappointment in the playoffs this year and even prior years has been Josh Howard. We should have traded him while he still had value. We won't get squat for him now that he's not only an admittingly pot smoker but because he has proven that he can't pull it together for the big games.

jj730 -
Dirk can't take over an entire game and shouldn't have to. Look at CP3 last night. He didn't have extraordinary stats. He had West and the bench to do their part. Three people showed up for Dallas last night and they were Dirk, Jet and Bass. I don't know where the rest of the team was. What makes this even worse than what it already is is the fact that Dallas is knowni for their DEPTH. Our depth hasn't done anything in the playoffs but leave Dirk to flounder and shoulder the blame.

The Kidd trade. Someone said it last night the best in the post game show. Sometimes trading young and talented for old and experienced isn't the best idea. I still thought that Kidd would improve the team for a year or two but I didn't realize that Kidd was going to be a PG who wouldn't shoot. He should be taking 3x the shots he is taking now. Nash is old and watching him compared to Kidd looks almost identical until it comes to shooting. Nash will make you pay if you play him soft. Kidd is too worried about missing to shoot which makes it that much easier to spread the defense in other directions.

So, what will they do? They will shop Howard and see if ANYONE has faith that Josh CAN be a top player and is just in a slump. They will shop everyone else but Dirk and Bass and see what happens. Also, I don't mean to be a pessimist but I am a realist. It isn't Dallas being down 3-1 that makes me have no faith in a comeback. It is that look that they have which is just like last year when playing GS. They are mentally defeated already. I guess that statement alone shows that maybe a new coach could help.

April 28, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Stick a fork in em, they are done!!!

April 28, 2008  09:42 AM ET

The Mavs have gone as far as they can go with the current core. Without a low post threat, this team isn't going to ever get it done. Avery will probably end up being the fall guy, but he didn't have the tools to do the job. Dirk will also be blamed, but asking him to carry this team without any front line help, is asking him to do something he isn't capable of doing. Cuban wants to win, so there probably will be a few changes. Howards admitted substance abuse will seal his doom, but until this team shores up the middle, they will continue to be an early exit. And it doesn't matter who the point guard is. I still don't believe he thought Kidd would help.

April 28, 2008  09:51 AM ET

how is it that the mavs trade for one of the greatest point guards in the game, and then take the ball out of his hands on offense? terry has been initiating the offense with kidd just looking lost because he cant shoot. until the mavs learn to use kidd as a point guard he'll have stats similar to last game with what 3 points and 5 boards and a few assists, thats not gonna get it done. the mavs need to switch their offense to the running style that phoenix uses otherwise kidd is going to continue to be useless. hopefully he'll be suspended for that foul that would really help the mavs out more than having him in

April 28, 2008  09:51 AM ET

They all smoke too much pot....right Josh..........looks like the Kidd and the Shaq deals spilled the apple cart...ill timed trades!

April 28, 2008  09:59 AM ET

lol how many pots is josh howard smoking? don't be so ignorant people everyone knows weed isn't a real drug, let the man do what he does as long as it doesn't impact his game

April 28, 2008  10:08 AM ET

He's going to fire Avery before he does anything. Too bad he can't fire himself.

texasmade, looks like your "rusted Spurs" have to put that broom away and unroll that welcome mat, 'cause the Big Cactus is coming back to the steers & queers state. This is a must win game for y'all. If the Suns win, they surely will win a game 6 in Phoenix and force a game 7. Arses better not get tight.

April 28, 2008  10:18 AM ET

I think this teams needs a drastically new look. Its been a good team, but this core is just not getting it done.

April 28, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Arejay, your right its a must win. A must win 1 out of the next 3 games.

April 28, 2008  10:20 AM ET

This team was done way before the J-Kidd trade. It's no coincidence that they got trumped by the Warriors last year even as a #1 seed.

The only player I see on that team with any true heart is that new guy Brandon Bass. The man plays with energy and some true heart.
