Browns pushing Winslow out?
Posted: Monday April 28, 2008 08:09AM ET
Longevity issues with Kellen Winslow and a potential contract dispute factored into the Browns making a surprise trade in the fourth round of the draft Sunday. They gave up their 2009 third-round pick to select pass-catching tight end Martin Rucker of Missouri. Winslow had another surgical procedure on his battered right knee in February. That was at least the fourth surgery on the knee injured in his 2005 motorcycle accident. He also had surgery on a broken right fibula and torn ankle ligaments in 2004. Winslow openly admits he's not the player he could have been. But after earning a trip to the Pro Bowl as an alternate prior to the latest surgery, he went public with his desire for a new contract. Savage and agent Drew Rosenhaus have had conversations about it, but nothing has been resolved.

Report Offensive Commentthis guy is nothing more than a big disappointment. He just thinks too highly of himself and can't live up to his own beliefs. He SHOULD be good, but he is too busy getting in motorcycle accidents when he shouldn't be, or calling himself a "warrior". Brett Favre is a warrior - he PLAYED a full season in his career. Tools who miss games every season are not what I call a warrior. He'll be effective for someone, whether it be Cleveland or somewhere else, but he really needs to get taken down a peg before he'll ever be who he thinks he already is.

Report Offensive CommentThis is an example of a very simple way to alienate yourself from your team's management and fan base. One ProBowl season and he wants the Browns to back up a Brinks truck to his door. He really needs to prove himself to be consistent season after season.

Report Offensive CommentThey would be foolish to give him any more $ after the stupidity he has shown.
He has had multiple serious injuries - don't cut him, they should let his contract ride out then let him go- nothing personal- just a business decision

Report Offensive CommentRosehaus, it is unfortunate that he can not be banned from working with NFL players. Winslow is a joke and his agent is a egotistical money grubbing maniac.

Report Offensive CommentThis is all speculation and IMO, shady journalism by the Plain Dealer. Winslow still has 3 years left on his contract and while he has a desire for a new deal realistically nothing will get done till after the upcoming season. The Browns coaching staff and front office want Winslow on this team, he is arguably the best TE in the NFL.
Drafting Rucker was a great selection for the attacking style of offense the Browns use. There is no other agenda behind that pick. I see Winslow and Rucker on the field together in a double tight end set and creating mismatches all over the place.

Report Offensive CommentHe made some mistakes when he first cam into the league and I thought he had learned from them. Obviously he did not though as seen by the fact that now he wants more after one great season.

Report Offensive CommentWinslow is the poster boy for guys who screw around and jeopardize their carees by riding motorcycles, etc. With the injuries that he had in the past, it will be had for ANYONE to sign him, especially with any sort of bonus and/or guaranteed money.
He is a very talented guy and based on his stats last year, will be a productive TE for anyone if he keeps his career on his mind.

Report Offensive CommentYou got to wonder how much shorter his career will be as a result of the injuries he has sustained.

Report Offensive CommentAll the above comments are nice, but you can count the really good pass catching Tight Ends on one hand. Winslow is one of them. Granted, he has injuries, but that's a fact of life in the NFL. If he reaches a point where he's unproductive, then he's gone. Until then, he plays on his current contract..... if he has a huge season without injuries, then he may get a better deal....

Report Offensive CommentPerfect example of why I favor a rookie cap. Let them prove it on an NFL field, then earn the top dollar. He has made a ridiculous amount of money for what he's done.

Report Offensive CommentOh com'n..you're talking about one of the top 3 TE's in the NFL! This guy played a big role in the Browns' success last year. I say give him the contract. He's too good to let go.

Report Offensive CommentThe only reason he made the pro bowl is that the other player had to withdraw. He should be grateful for what he gets paid, let all these atheletes work for what the common guy has to make. Maybe he needs another tatoo, such a role model...

Report Offensive CommentAt least one more year of his contract should be played out. Bottom line is, he is a top flight NFL tight end. He does deserve to be payed like one. However, Cleveland lost two years of production from this guy and has two injury riddled seasons. Play out one more year of your very generous deal, Kellen. Phil Savage is doing the right thing and planning for the unexpected.
Good move Cleveland

Report Offensive CommentI believe Matt Walsh has some excellent tape on Kellen Winslow Jr.. After we review it with Mr. Goodell we might be in the "hunt" for Kellen. You know the old say saying " a good tape is worth a thousand words.
