Junior may pick MLB over UGA

The debate over whether Cartersville (Ga.) junior Donovan Tate's future lies in football or baseball will likely rage into next summer. That's when the 6-foot-3, 205-pound two-sport athlete is expected to be a high choice as an outfielder in the major league baseball draft. Tate has a scholarship offer from nearly every college football power throughout the nation. Will the son of former Georgia running back Lars Tate follow in his dad's footsteps and sign with the Bulldogs as a quarterback or safety?

high baseball draft = nice signing bonus and longer possible career.

football scholi= free education but no real guarantee he'll ever start or succeed and risk of injury greater.

What would you do? I know what I would do....

sadly. its a smart choice (as watching baseball is worse than watching paint dry. and, in japan, players smoke in the outfield and on the bench; same players are all-stars here. b-ball players are true athletes).

in football, any play could be the end of your career.
personnally, i cannot understand why these guys invest so much time and effort in such a risky venture.

He can still come back to football, if baseball doesn't pan out.

He may consider USC after watching the Trojans get 10 guys drafted.

For this decision see Jeff Francoeur. Would have started at Clemson at safety and maybe been an NFL player. Got the big signing bonus from the Braves, worked hard & well, here we are....

Play College football kid. I remember a kid named Joe Mauer who jilted FSU for MLB, and look how badly that turned out for him! Oh...wait...nevermind...

April 28, 2008  04:10 PM ET

using a risk-weighted expected return on athletic talent, go with baseball.
every football injury is noted by NFL scouts, and your value falls. immediately i think of:
Tyrone Prothra, Dennis Dixon, Bo Jackson,
and the long list of NFL calibur college football players you never heard of since they had career ending injuries.
excepting rotator-cuff issues, there is not such thing as a baseball related injury.

I like how the Gator fan is saying Tate should turn pro so UF doesn't have to face him during the football season...ha ha.

My God, I saw Lars Tate play at Georgia. I can't believe he has a son this age. Makes me feel old. But I agree with J Hova, go ahead and sign the baseball deal, then if you end up in the minors, come back and be a 24 year old freshman for somebody.

April 29, 2008  05:57 PM ET

I am older than Lars Tate by just 3 years! Imagine how I feel!

April 30, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Come on to Georgia and lets get busy dominating the SEC.
