Bengals planning for Chad's exit?

A new era is dawning for the Bengals' wide receiver corps. The early selection of two wideouts in the 2008 NFL draft -- Coastal Carolina University's Jerome Simpson in the second round Saturday, April 26, and Florida's Andre Caldwell in the third round Sunday -- signals changes are coming. Here's why: Chad Johnson is demanding a trade; T.J. Houshmandzadeh will command big money in 2009 when his contract expires at the end of this season; and Chris Henry is gone, released April 3. "You always have to stay ahead of the curve," said Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski.

they really should be. is this surprising at all?

April 28, 2008  10:07 AM ET

They better be. Why is this on T&R?

April 28, 2008  10:20 AM ET

if they couldnt win with TJ ( leading receiver in the league) and ocho cinco (one of the most productive receivers of the last 5 yrs) ..what makes them think that they will win with some rookies that have way more potential than productivity??...you dont get better by going younger at receiver...unless you run a 4.2 or 4.3....they will struggle to get open and most will fail...this is a set back...no matter what they say..its time for Marvin Lewis to go..

April 28, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Its not that they think they can win. there looking at whats going to happen. Henry is out, ocho is out and TJ wants a whole lot more money. They needed to draft recivers to replace henry at the three and they need to trade Chad for a number two reciver and saftiys or line backers to help there defence. The past years they have had the offence, they just were taking themselves out at the knees with how bad there defence was.

The Bengals need players who are willing to be a part of a team. Like it or not Chad Johnson just won't be that type of player plus he is just fed up with all the losing and criticism he takes being the face of that franchise. A trade will be best for both Bengals and Chad.
I like TJ but you have to wonder how much of his numbers can be attributed to the extra attention that the defense must pay to Chad.

April 28, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Hey Chad, don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

April 28, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I would love to have Chad in New Orleans with Brees, but with caution. TO has quieted down and cleaned up now that he is winning, could Chad do the same?

TO was a **** while he was winning in Philly and San Fran....did you block that out?

April 28, 2008  10:53 AM ET

wow, you can't say s.**** bag???????

April 28, 2008  10:54 AM ET

If they were dumping Chad, why didn't they take all the draft picks they were being offered? What are they going to get for him now? Too late! Stupid Organization.

TO did create problems in Dallas or did you forget the icy relationship he had with Parcells and Bledsoe. Not saying it was not all unmerited but he should have shown them some more respect than he did.
Also Chad is far less of a potential problem than TO. As long as he gets a big new deal then he will be happy.

I agree c note. CJ's attitude is terrible, however, it's not like Cincinnati is showing that they are all that interested in winning. Marvin Lewis is an overrated coach who is keeping his job well past what he should. It's a race issue.

April 28, 2008  11:38 AM ET

I really dont understand this.... Redskins offered a 1st this year and a possible 1st next year depending on performace. Why not take it? if he is going to throw a fit and create an issue for your team take the cap hit and get 2 first round picks....... if you are trying to fix your image then start with those picks.....

April 28, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Sir Robin, the Bengals take a huge salary cap hit if they trade Johnson.
They're better off letting him sit out.

April 28, 2008  11:46 AM ET

KP: True: what I'm saying, though, is if they were going to pull the trigger on a trade, why wouldn't they have done it during the draft instead of looking at it now. I agree that they're letting him sit..... but a 1st and 2nd (conditional 1st) pick, it wouldn't seem like it's going to get any better than that. Maybe you're right that it's all about the cap hit & he's going to sit.... good point.

April 28, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Damn you Chad!!!!

April 28, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Ya know...with Carson Palmer throwing that ball around...most receivers in the league would look good............I don't know that Chad is as irreplaceable as he thinks.

Sir Robin, aka Eric Idle might I interest you in some shrubbery?
