Will Ford return to Raptors?

Was that T.J. Ford's last game in a Raptors uniform? Ford doesn't think it was, but he's not discounting the possibility either. He took criticism in the media for his inability to play second fiddle to Jose Calderon after coming back from the injury. Eventually, at the insistence of Calderon, Ford returned to the starting role and the criticism subsided. Ford made it very clear that his feelings about the situation have nothing at all to do with Calderon, who he respects. And he wasn't willing to call the situation unworkable in the future.

I'm not sure about Ford. Positives: good quickness, breaks down defenses, capable of having big assist games.

Negatives: Small, weak defender, suspect outside shot. Fact is though there are few very good point guards available. The Ford/Calderon situation is better then most teams even though they only showed up once in that playoff series.

They need to sit Calderon and Ford down in a room and have a long conversation. Calderon should be the starter. And Ford should accept that. Ford should get a good 30-35 mins a game, but Calderon runs the team better. If Ford could accept that, they should keep him.

I think there's more pressing issues for the Raps then their point-guard situation. Like finding Bosh some players on the wing, and a banger or two down low.

Ford will NEVER accept a non-starting role, and it would be dumb to make him a bench player after Colangelo gave him a rather large contract last season. The ideal situation would be to sign Calderon, bring in a veteran for support and trade T.J. to someone looking for an up-tempo type playmaker and get a large body who can bang the boards in return.

Raptors needs :

1) Get tougher, way tougher on the glass and defending.
2) Make Bargnani a forward again, the center experiment failed badly and destroyed his confidence.
3) Trade T.J. for a big body that can defend/intimidate in the paint.

joec, very well said. i seriously hope colangelo listens to you!

The Raptors are going to model themselves after the Suns if they can. They won't be a dominant inside, tough team.

April 29, 2008  10:22 AM ET

He will stay, Calderon and Ford are a great 1-2 punch. They just need to determine their role.

send him to new york for crawford or clippers for magette

He should go. I have to believe that he lost the respect of most, if not all, of the team by his late season pouting. Remember before Ford came back from injury Calderon was playing great, almost at an all-star level, and the team was playing well. Then Ford poisoned the well, the team went south, Calderon went south, their season was done. Even after Jose nobly asked to be put on the bench to try and salvage the season. How could you have faith in a self-serving jerk like Ford again?

I wonder if this was an issue before the injury as well, I remember being surprised that nobody rushed to Ford's defense when he was flagrantly fouled by that player on Atlanta. Are they all soft or do they just not like TJ?

April 29, 2008  12:52 PM ET

The raps are not gonna get a whole lot for ford at this point. Although I would love nothing more than to see Ford shipped off for a banger, colangelo might have to hang onto him for one more yr & see his market value rise, because at the endof the day ford is a talented player. He's just not a good fit for the raps.

TJ...please return to the Raptors next year.

Toronto will need you to stay after Portland signs Calderon this summer. LOL.

April 29, 2008  03:40 PM ET

Miami will draft beasley and trade Haslem for TJ Ford.

April 29, 2008  03:40 PM ET

Then Rose won't be needed.

April 29, 2008  04:00 PM ET

Bosh and Ford are close friends, if he's traded hopefully that won't become an issue. Ford's health concerns are another concern and reason to trade him.

April 29, 2008  04:07 PM ET

they should trade t.j. and a pick to move into the top 5 or 10 at the draft

April 29, 2008  04:10 PM ET

maybe try to get hibbert or someone who isnt scared to rebound like everyone on that team. i love em but there the softest in the leaugue

April 29, 2008  04:17 PM ET

I forgot, the Raps will have a new guard next year, someone playing in Europe (surprise, surprise), not sure how good he'll be, but I hear he's become quite over-hyped over in T.O.

April 29, 2008  05:45 PM ET

Either he or Calderon will be dealt. My guess is it will be Ford.

April 29, 2008  11:50 PM ET

doesn't anyone find it ironic that they traded a big body with a soft touch and the ability to rebound for TJ, and now everyone is calling for TJ to be traded for a big body with a softtouch and an ability to reboud.

add to that the fact the drafting bargnani at number one overall has to be at least as great a miscalculation as drafting Hoffa at 8, makes you wonder whether the only difference between Babcock adn Colangelo is the quality of their suits.
