Were Shockey rumors bogus?

How did Jeremy Shockey the phenomenon become Shockey the pariah after he got hurt and the Giants hit the road and shockingly rolled to Super Bowl glory? The case to jettison Shockey is based largely on hearsay and bogus observations. Like a spark on dry brush, the wildfire spread that Shockey is a terror around Eli Manning, that the fiery tight end browbeat the timid quarterback after every errant throw, that Shockey was a crazy man in meetings, sulking as he returned to the huddle knowing he was open with nothing to show for it. Well, anyone who thinks of Manning shrinking around Shockey like an intimidated wimp has never spent a minute around Manning. The guy didn't suddenly grow up in frigid Green Bay or in the last two minutes of Super Bowl XLII. Eli is never going to grab Shockey's facemask and tell him to stuff it, just as Shockey is never going to quietly shrink into the background.

Wow, finally some reality comes to T&R.

April 29, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Shockey is sooooo over rated.

April 29, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I do think the Saints persued Shockey. And the Giants listened. I'm sure if the Saints blew the Giants away, the trade could have happened.

But if you listen to the Giant players and front office and ignore the internet and media gossip, they want him back and feel they are a better team with him.

I do think that Shockey has told the Giants he prefers a different role. He may have said or else trade me or you may as well trade me, but it could be a bluff.

Or he and his scummy agent are going to try to get more $$$. I doubt he can, he doesn't really have any leverage.

April 29, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Shockey actually isn't overrated. All the hype about his abilities as a receiver is true. Shockey simply doesn't have the mindset to be the prototypical "blocking first, catching later" tight end. The Giants found out that they can win big games without him. That has to be a blow to his ego and a boost to the team's.

April 29, 2008  08:50 AM ET

I'm a Giant fan, but honestly, while their defense was stellar during the playoffs, their offense doesn't scare anyone. They got darn lucky a few times during the Green Bay game and that last run in the Superbowl.

If Shockey comes back with a good mindset and he and Eli can click while Boss comes along, they could be lethal.

The bottom line is...any chance the evil scuumbag media has to drive a wedge between a player and a franchise for the purpose of createing a story...their gonna jump on !

They do the same thing outside of sports everyday, regardless of the ramifications.....the media is pure evil personified !

April 29, 2008  09:02 AM ET

They can be. Most of them envy the players and teams they cover and can't wait to bring someone down. One minute they are kissing their butts, the next stabbing them in the back.

You have to be like Jeter and never say ANYTHING.

April 29, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Hmmmmm..........there is something to be said about Team Chemistry. I don't know that Shockey is really a team guy.

The fact is, if you want Eli to really mature, this has to be his team and he has to be the leader of the offense.

Thats a tough thing to do when your TE is such an overbearing loudmouth. In a game of inches and seconds, having Shockey's voice in the back of your mind, whining about not getting the ball enough...could make the difference between an 8 interception day and a Super Bowl Win.

April 29, 2008  09:24 AM ET

wow no really? of course neither will back down.

April 29, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Don't think for a minute that the shots of Shockey boozing it up in the suite during the Super Bowl didn't lower his standing with the team. If the Giants got a realistic offer this clown would have been gone!

April 29, 2008  10:12 AM ET

THWACK!

April 29, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I think the playoffs taught his ego a lesson... they won the SB without him. That being said, he is a real asset to the team and I believe he will only try harder and keep his moodiness to a minimum. Him and Boss will be a great combination at TE and Shockey still is a fantastic 3rd down option. I seriously doubt any player is gonna whine or try and bully Eli. All Eli has to say... "Oh I am sorry I didn't throw the ball to you... oh hey did you see that last drive in last years Super Bowl by the way? Now ****."

April 29, 2008  10:56 AM ET

He was pretty quite last year. Didn't really shoot off his mouth that I can remember.

April 29, 2008  11:44 AM ET

Of course he didn't shoot off his mouth. When Shockey made the comments about Bill Parcells years ago, Wellington Mara called him on the carpet and threatened to fire him if he ever embarrassed the organization again. Why do you think Shockey will show emotion, but won't come out and rip anyone in the media anymore?

April 29, 2008  12:15 PM ET

Isn't it difficult to imagine that Shockey brow-beat Manning and acted like a crazy man in meetings? Oh.... bad example, I guess...

April 29, 2008  12:40 PM ET

Shockey has great ability as a receiving tight end and the toughness to break tackles and intimidate every sunday. He's in the wrong system. The Giants are a run-first team with Manning at the helm. Shokey is not a blocking tight end. He is a receiving tight end in the Antonio Gates/Alge Crumpler mold. He should go out west and play some run n' gun football. Could you imagine him in Arizona????

April 29, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I for one am glad the Giants held onto Shockey. I'm looking forward to him posting up a monster year for the GIANTS ^^

Well sure, he learned what not to say to the media. But do you want him to be a robot and not have any emotion? That's the way he is and the way he plays. He shouldn't show up Eli, but Shockey has said it's not really aimed at Eli. They are two grown men, they should work it out.

Anyway Eli was pretty adamant about wanting him back. So it can't be that bad.

April 29, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Glad he didn't go anywhere, never really thought he would. The Gints now have some depth at TE as they do at several key positions.
Lets see if they can't upgrade the secondary this year, maybe some of the youth they have will mature.

April 29, 2008  01:18 PM ET

The Giants are a way bette team with Jemy Shockey at TE . The Giants healthy, may have the best offense in the Nation Football League. The additon of the talented but troubled Maio Mannigham in the slot, the emegence of Steve Smith and Plex and Amani being themselves i think the G-men have a nice chance to repeat.
