Will Irish join football conference?

If Notre Dame regains its football prominence under Coach Charlie Weis, who reportedly has a throwback recruiting class to soothe the pain of the 3-9 debacle last fall, the Irish will have no reason to question the viability of remaining independent. If the losing continues to the point where a conference affiliation becomes the ultimate concession to contemporary reality, the Big Ten and its natural Midwest rivalries will be impossible to resist.

Who really cares anymore about the tying, crying Irish?? NBC would probably love to get out of their TV contract with them too. They'd be competitive in conference USA..

3-9 might become more of a yearly occurence for Notre Dame instead of playing there softies every year as an independent. Navy, AIr Force, Duke, Stanford in 2007, Army, Air Force, Navy and North Carolina in 2006, BYU Syracuse, Stanford and Navy in 2005, There won't be any more 4-a-year cream puffs if they join the big ten. m Jus tlook at Penn State They've had tough years since joining the Big 10.

And recruiting is not Notre Dmaes solution to its 3-9 season. Its called Charlie Weis.

That would be weird, I have always known that irish to be a independent, if anything they need to join the big east, that's where thier basketball team is at.

You mean ND would have the kahunas to join the big 11?

You mean the Big 11 would have the kahunas to add a 12th team, setting them up for a conference championship game? But that would add another game to Ohio State's schedule. and that would force the so called "cold weather schools" to actually play a game in December. Highly doubtful....

April 29, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Won't happen.

April 29, 2008  08:20 AM ET

How can you be called the "Big Ten(11)" and not change the name if you add another team??

April 29, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Want happen? The losing is coming to a hault. Has the person writing this article seen their schedule. It isn't easy, but all games are winnable, except USC game. That is possible depending how they play up front. I believe Charlie has made alot of adjustments too his Coaching Staff and his own personal way of approaching the game. These athletes except for the Seniors are Charlie's kids. I predict they will win 7-9 games this year. The young kids are too hungrey, the only thing they lack is big game expierence, which they will go thru this season. With the incoming class, sum will see playing time upfront, especailly on the defense. As bad as the team was last year, I believe they was ranked 2nd in the Nation against the pass. I believe 38th against the run, I see plenty of upside.

April 29, 2008  08:42 AM ET

The big-ten is already taking a beating around the nation. Why would the conference make it's situation worse by adding ND? They wanted to be independent, let them continue!

April 29, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Everybody says that ND plays "cream puffs" but let's look at who THE OHIO STATE played last year........Youngstown St., Akron, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Kent St. Now let's take a look at who PENN ST. played last year, Florida International, Buffalo, Minnesota, and Temple.

It looks like their schedule will actually get easier if they join the Big Ten. I'll take Stanford and Navy over half the Big Ten teams anyway.....

April 29, 2008  08:55 AM ET

ravens: OSU played Washington as their 'major' non-conference opponent last season. They played Texas previously, and have USC this and next year, with Miami, Georgia, and Oklahoma in the future. Notre Dame plays the same schools year in and year out.

LSUDYNASTY: Even if the Big 10 adds a 12th team, they probably won't schedule a conference championship game.

April 29, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Washington didn't even make a bowl game last year....what is your point??

They played Texas the first game after Vince Young in McCoy's first game ever......finally, they play USC this year....but the last couple years their schedule has been a joke, hence why they can't keep it close in the BCS Championship game. Also, the bottom of the Big Ten has just become embarassing.

ND does not play the same schools year in and year out, that is retarded....look at their schedule in the last 10 years and tell me if you agree with yoru statement.

April 29, 2008  09:04 AM ET

If, and hopefully they will, Notre Shame continues to lose, they will have to join a conference because that sweet deal they had with NBC is about to evaporate. NBC has lost its shirt on the deal as ad revs have fallen due to ND's poor performances.

Nothing would be sweeter than to see ND suck again this year and see Charlie handed his walking papers.

April 29, 2008  09:10 AM ET

I think they'll learn from Penn State and stay independent.

April 29, 2008  09:11 AM ET

I've read the Big 10 would like to add another school.

April 29, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Not likely

April 29, 2008  09:22 AM ET

They should join the Big 11 and since there is already the Big XII the Big Ten + 1 will become the Big Ten + 2.

April 29, 2008  09:34 AM ET

Why would the Big Ten want them anyway?

Exactly, they already have the token also ran in Penn St.

April 29, 2008  09:41 AM ET

This will never happen. They always try to start this "Will the Irish join a football conference" crap and the answer is always no. It doesn't make sense to join a conference anyway.

This rumor of ND joining the Big Ten has been floating around since I was in school, way back when. Good to see it passed on to another generation.
