Although USC freshman Davon Jefferson never publicly announced whether he had made himself eligible for the NBA draft, school spokesman Dave Tuttle said today that a representative from the league office recently called asking for biographical information, meaning Jefferson declared prior to the Sunday evening deadline.

Too bad the NBA doesn't have a league for wannabes. Taj Gibson came to his senses & he'd at least be drafted. Jefferson would have to hope someone really reaches.

Taj Gibson is smart to stay but his age is going to work against him in the long run. He's a soon to be 22 year old junior. That's at least 3 or 4 years older then the Freshmen to the pros players.

Jefferson is older too but he needs to stay as well.

Hope you have your passport Jefferson. Enjoy SOCAL for a few more years, so many kids now making this mistake of leaving school too early.

April 29, 2008  12:21 PM ET

As of right now, 11 Pac 10 players alone have declared early for the draft... not counting Jefferson. Does anyone have a total count? It's getting out of hand. They can't all be 1st rounders, let alone lottery picks.

He has D-league written all over him and his attitude. This post is dated, he's not leaning, he declared days ago. Crack job reporting SI.

Pease stay, for your own good.

I'm curious how Tim Floyd is selling his program to these kids. I have always liked him as a coach but do you think he is creating the illusion with his players that they will be "NBA ready" after one or two years with him? I realize this happens at many institutions (players leaving early) but with all USC has to offer why would they want to jump before they are certain of NBA riches...?

April 29, 2008  05:44 PM ET

Floyd packaged USC well... Pac-10 talent, playing in LA, his willingness to deal w a one-and-done player, his NBA experience, playing early... college is almost becoming a one-year prep school for these kids before the jump to the league. Demar DeRozan is next.

I understand what you are saying MARINsur4 but where does USC, the institution, fit into all of this? Is he selling their great history and tradition (and I say that with respect) or just "a nice place to hang out until I get you raedy for the NBA. It is hard to feel attached to any institution after only a year (or maybe two).

I can't believe you people get your sports news from this lame website. Not only is si a third-rate site, but truth&rumors is usually rumors and rarely truth. Don't worry fellow Tro-fans...Davon is still a Trojan and I doubt he will go pro before Sunday. You should get your sports news from a more RELIABLE source like yahoo sports. They haven't mentioned anything about Davon leaning or declaring, so this RUMOR is NOT TRUE!

Gariboy - youre absolutely right, the academic side of the equation is irrelevant here. It's about the athletics and not the academics. It's wrong, that's why the NBA should go back to allowing kids to come straight from high school or institute a longer mandatory stay in college. But in the end it's all about the money. USC knew Mayo and Devon would bring in money, so they let this happen. Pity.

Tro-fan - the NBA already contacted the athletic dept about DJ, though I wish he'd stay at least one more year, he won't.

April 29, 2008  07:40 PM ET

I'll believe it when I see it in yahoo sports...and I haven't yet. DON'T TRUST THIS WEBSITE!

April 29, 2008  10:13 PM ET

You mean everything on this site isn't true? What a rip! I want my money back!

April 30, 2008  09:59 AM ET

DOes he have an agent? If not when is the last day you can decide not to be part of the draft?

April 30, 2008  09:59 AM ET

And no Reggie Bush jokes about an agent (LOL)

April 30, 2008  02:29 PM ET

I think he went with Art Tellem.

April 30, 2008  02:58 PM ET

I think he has until June 19th to pull out...after that, there's no going back.

I would suggest that Davon stay in school...but let's face it, he doesn't really belong in any school
