Suns mum on D'Antoni's future

07:50 AM ET 04.29 | As speculation about Mike D'Antoni's job security has increased the last few days, this is what we've heard from Suns owner Robert Sarver and general manager Steve Kerr: Nothing. They haven't rushed to D'Antoni's defense or offered assurances that he'll return next year. Instead, Kerr publicly countered D'Antoni's belief that the Suns' offense was to blame for the losses in Games 1 and 2. Broadcaster Tom Chambers, a team employee, went on the radio and questioned D'Antoni's tactics. And there have been whispers within the organization that D'Antoni has been out-coached by San Antonio's Gregg Popovich. All of which means one thing: Tonight's Game 5 against the Spurs may be D'Antoni's final act as the Suns' coach.

What is a new coach with a one year window going to do in Phoenix? Fire D'Antoni if you don't think he's a good coach but don't give unreasonable expectations to a brand new coach.

April 29, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Of course they're mum on his future...shoot they're mum on their own future.

April 29, 2008  10:01 AM ET

I agree with notbychoice. However, even though hindsight is 20/20, given the fact that Suns were up by 3 with seconds left, conventional wisdom would've called for a foul to put SA on the line. C'mon, this is the playoffs, funny things happen in the playoffs. Intensity is higher, shots fall for guys under extreme pressure. Need I say more? Twice, Suns let it get away because D'Antoni made the wrong call, or no call.

April 29, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Hopefully Shaq can stay in shape. $40 million left on 2 years is a lot to swallow.

April 29, 2008  10:31 AM ET

The Suns didn't let it get away because D'Antoni made a wrong call, or no call. It's just that the better team and coach won. The Suns and their fans always want to make excuses when they loose. Does that start with the coach? Good question. Whatever happens to the Spurs this year, win or loose, you won't see the city or the team turning on each other. THAT is the difference between the Suns and the Spurs!

That is why this year or the next, we'll see ANOTHER NBA Championship banner hanging in the rafters.

They're just continuing a tradition of being doormats. No high expectations for them, and it's a pleasant suprise if their competitive. On the other hand, the Mavs have been letting their fans down for quite some time. Houston has never regained their championship form. The "rusted Spurs", whose championship run began with an asterisk, is soon to be over. Why? 'Cause IT"S LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

April 29, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Wow bringing up the strike shortened season; that is really desperate. The fact that your Lakers couldn???t win it all that year still hurts doesn???t it? I guess if by some miracle the Lakers win this year we should all ignore the ***Memphis gift trade***. Face it, without that trade, you Lakers would probably have been at home watching Golden State play. Of course you???d probably be on that bandwagon saying "IT'S GREAT IN THE GOLDEN STATE!!!"

Texasmade There will be a texas sized ass whooping tonight but the wrong asp is going to get it, when the SUNS win tonight I will gaurantee a gave seven on Sunday. The SUNS sadly gave Houston the name Clutch city we are FIXIN to give SA the nickname CHOKE CITY

Shouldn't Steve Kerr be the one on the hotseat? D'antoni is a great coach, as most former players turn out to be (except Isiah of course). Sure, they are imploding in the playoffs, but they are losing to the defending champs for G*d's sake. And it isn't a sweep, so you can't call it a TOTAL failure. It isn't like the situation in Dallas where the #1 seed loses to Golden State last year and is about to get dropped by an inexperienced Hornets team a year later. The Suns made a risky trade and D'antoni coached them through it in perhaps the most competitive western conference race of all time. They could have easily been the #8 seed or missed the playoffs entirely.

If any coach should be fired this year, it should be Avery Johnson. All that talent, all that experience, the Kidd trade. Horrible job. At least the Suns finished the season on a winning streak.

April 29, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Dear Phoenix:

Please wait until after tonight's game to fire him. It would not look right doing it before.

Come on now, if everyone thinks the Suns can do it, they certianly think the Rockets or Mavs can. I guess not. Well maybe next year another team will just give up and give one of them their best player for nothing, then you all can be Rockets or Mavs fans.

April 29, 2008  01:20 PM ET

JPD, you know I am a SUNS fan, I like the Rockets unless they play Phoenix. The Spurs have everything to lose and Phoenix everything to gain. Should be a great war tonight and Thursday. I can't wait for game seven!!!!

Texasmade I won't whine, last year I had good reason too, not this year. I keep hoping that someone hip checks Cheap Shot Rob into the stands and have Duncan and Ginobli get off the bench!!!
