Distractions disappoint Dirk

At least one teammate thinks Josh Howard's pot confession might have made the Mavs off-season come a little earlier. Dirk Nowitzki didn't hesitate when asked whether the off-court drama took a toll on the Mavs during this series. "Yeah," Dirk said. "Obviously, very disappointing what happened in the playoffs -- bad timing. I think in the playoffs it's really time to focus on basketball and not let distractions come up. So I'm very, very disappointed with the timing of the whole thing, but I still try to keep them all together, try to make everybody play as hard as they can. But it wasn't good enough." Dirk didn't name names, but it was pretty clear he was talking about Howard's strange decision to discuss his tendency to "partake in smoking weed in the off-season sometimes" on the radio the afternoon of Game 3.

Just excuses. Man most everyone smokes pot, as long as you have a supplier. Not like he said he smoked crack? Right. But it appears they are not willing to admit to that, it is just obvious by their play on the court.

Your team just couldn't bring it Dirk! Distraction or not. GSW took care of you pretty much the same way last season. Maybe you guys are just soft after all.

Maybe they should smoke some doobies, go get a bunch of tattoos, wear LOTS of bling, and then go have a shootout at a nightclub at 4 AM. Isn't that the NBA thing?

You are a moron screaming for attention. Call your mama.

Kidd trade was just plain bad........you will never be the Spurs.
Pot=alchohal, no big deal!

One thing is certain: Josh Howard was absolutely horrible in this series.

For the criticism Dirk Nowitzki has received on these boards, he was the only Maverick keeping Dallas in striking distance in several of those games.

Let the finger pointing begin!

April 30, 2008  08:20 AM ET

I think it's time for a complete makeover. Trade as many players as possible Howard, Terry, Dampier and maybe even Dirk. Dallas is probably stuck with Kidd, but maybe they can trade for Derrick Rose. Maybe they can be back at contending in 2 years

April 30, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Josh Howard is, and always has been, a jack****! Jason Kidd, one of the all-time great point guards in NBA history, proved not to be the missing piece in the Mavs puzzle. He arrived on the scene about three years too late - after he'd already lost a much needed step or two.

The Mavs need to make some heavyduty roster changes over the off-season.

Bond 007, perhaps "most every one" of your pothead friends smokes weed, but not "most everyone" else does. I smoked a considerable amount of weed during my college years, but haven't touched the stuff in over 30 years now. Additionally, none of my friends are "tokers" either.

That you know of.......you would probably be surprised who enjoys this naturally grown weed. Hell, its more natural than a lot of the food we eat.

That trade really did backfire. Now they traded away a first round draft pick and Harris to be beaten by the Hornets 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs.

Josh Howard was just terrible the entire series...he may have been missing his weed.

April 30, 2008  09:03 AM ET

The Mavs better hope that J Kidd does not injure his 35 year old body in the Olympics

April 30, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Dirk is just soft and not a leader like D Wade told us already. Josh Howard's pot wasnt the reason Chris Paul went ballistic on them like a 20 year veteran.

April 30, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Yeah that would have made me bummed out and not concentrate on the NBA playoffs? Come on Dirk...excuses, excuses!!! Just admit you guys choked again. Chris Paul could have been playing with a bunch of girl scouts on his team and you still would have lost.......

April 30, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Just curious; I mentioned prior to the season a trade involving Devin Harris, Terry, and Dampier for Agent 0 and Haywood and people from Dallas killed me

That trade would have put dallas further along than the Kidd trade

Hey, talk to Charlotte and see if they want Kidd

April 30, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Maybe they put that in a new NBA commercial with Josh holding a bong and laughing through the smoke just before they cut to "NBA: Where Amazing Happens."

April 30, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Excuses! Try playing some D. Chris Paul was just too much for Dallas and you had no one to slow him down. Just like Phoenix could not slow down Parker & Ginobli (I think I spelled his name correctly). All three of these guys are fast and you need some young legs to keep up with them, Dallas just di not have that.

BigBooth?....so if you traded Harris & Terry for Arenas....who is going to run the team?...Agent 0 is a gunner.
