Celtics escape suspensions

The Celtics' mediocre performance during the fourth quarter of Game 4 did not sit well with coach Doc Rivers. Yesterday, the Celtics fretted about potential Game 5 suspensions because during the Game 4 fracas Kendrick Perkins briefly left the bench and Kevin Garnett made contact with referee Ed Rush. Just before dinnertime, Boston management got word that there would be no suspensions, but Rivers acknowledged, "We, as a team, have to stop putting the league in this position. That's on us, not on the league."

I'm surprised they didn't just pull out their guns and have a shootout.

Isn't that NBA players do?

Just a bunch a gangbangers.

is that a gang sign?

Why would that worrant a suspension? Nobody got hurt, nothing big happened. This is a good decision from the NBA.

The Celtics really need to focus, they can't have a 7 game series. The Cavs are already up 3-1 against the Wizards and will probably be well rested and waiting for the Celtics (FYI, the Cavs and Celtics beat each other twice).

While I would love to have Boston get a big suspension, it would really be stupid to suspend him for putting his toe on the court during an altercation. Marvin Williams did the same thing for the hawks.

his fist is placed slightly below his left shoulder, while his left arm is placed ouward and slightly askew. This can only mean that he is in a gang

After last year When Amare got booted but Duncan didn't. I'm glad they didn't suspend anyone. This will be a wakeup call for the Celtics.

This Dan Shaughnessy column just exudes the annoying sense of entitlement that is endemic to Boston sports fans.

The League can't suspend Boston and risk an early exit form the playoffs. The League needs people to watch this finals...

April 30, 2008  09:03 AM ET

even their coach expected a suspension. when did they go from being too strict to being so forgiving? typical preferential treatment for a team the nba wants and needs to make the finals.

April 30, 2008  09:10 AM ET

That was a slap in the face to Suns fans if you ask me. However, this just proves that rules don't apply to everyone and the league should be ashamed of themselves for it.

KG pushed off that ref like he was going into a brawl...I though even touching a referee warranted a suspension but I guess not for KG.

EastCoastJessie: Don't worry. The NBA will ensure that your Lakers will benefit plenty from some of the same absurd non-suspensions and non-calls before this playoff cycle is over.

April 30, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I agree EastCoastJessie, what do you tell Suns fans? (and please, do not call them whiners, they have a valid beef here). If the rule is one game for stepping on the court and they don't enforce, it feeds all the nutjob conspiracy theorist who think Stern is the equal of Vince McMahon. Let's be clear here: Dwayne Wade wasn't fouled half as much as the refs called in the finals, LeBron shouldn't have beaten Detroit and so on. When calls like this are made it undermines the game. Everyone who erred should be suspended, point blank.

That was funny

If tehy would have suspended Garnett and the Hawks won game 5 in Boston and possibly held home court in Atlanta; all h**l would have broken loose. The NBA was not going to touch that potential powder keg.

April 30, 2008  09:45 AM ET

It's still funny to me how easily Maverick players get suspended but nobody else's (especially the NBA's darling teams like the Celtics) don't. The NBA is rigged!
