Man City to sack Goran-Eriksson

The temptation is to say, poor Sven Goran-Eriksson, which, of course, is inaccurate even though he is facing imminent termination. He'll hardly be poor. Not with two years left on his Manchester City contract, and a reported payout of $4.9 million coming his way for the soon-to-be sacked manager. City's second-half slide sparked media speculation in Britain and hit a frenzied pitch when Eriksson met with team owner and former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sunday in Manchester, leading to reports that Eriksson would be gone at the end of the season.

Like Thaskin can find anyone else better? Sven will find another job somewhere.

April 30, 2008  09:27 AM ET

overrated my ass, Shinawatra is crazy for letting Sven go. He brought City up from relegation worries to top ten and the situation was only going to improve. Uefa cup next season, even Champs league a few seasons down. He attracted good players (Elano, Corluka, etc) and there are guys that are just going to leave if Sven is out. A foolish move by a foolish man.

Sven is the real deal and Shinawatra is nuts if he sacks him. He has done a great job, and while they have dropped off at the end of the season, so has pretty much everyone else. I tend to believe its just really competitive in England and no match is a cake walk outside of Derby.

As for overrated..and I am sure you are talking about his England manager stint, let his England record speak for itself. In 5 years he only lost 5 games, 2 of which were by penalty. I would take that record any day.

It's not his fault England's National Team are basically paper tigers.

Sven is by no means over rated! If you look at the stats for Man City from this time last season compared to now, they have improved! They are 4 places higher in the standings, have gained 13 more points and have an increase in Goals per game from 1.16 to 1.52!! All signs that Man City are moving in the right direction!

April 30, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Sven is a world-class manager. England should have held on to him much longer. As for Man-City, if you're gonna dish that much money out for Dinho knowing that he won't be attracted to a team with so little media coverage and world recognition, why would you go and fire one of your attractive assets?

I mean, the man beat City's main rivals Manchester United twice this season in the Premiership. That alone should keep him a job.

Last two seasons MCity finished 15th and 14th. I think 9th place this season is definitely an improvement--yet not great. I'm not sure why they would get rid of him already--world class players will come to MC and play for Sven, but not if he's not there. I hear the deal IS done though--Sven is gone.

April 30, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Its a shame. Erikson has done a pretty good job and was determined to bring in some world-class players this summer. He'll be getting offers from other clubs, though, so he shouldn't be that too broken up about it.

The players at Man City are really angry that he's leaving, though. I think Shinawatra should have taken the locker room morale into account before he sacked Sven.

April 30, 2008  12:40 PM ET

Shinawatra is going to put a Thai manager and have him sign 2-3 kids from the Thai natl team. The guy has money but has no idea what hes doing. Rebuilding takes more time than a year...

Wow. They were so in love with Eriksson first half of the season now they are talking about firing him. It's always bad idea to fire a coach of football team after one bad stretch, especially when ihe's a guy named Sven Goran Eriksson who discovered some new talents for the team to make amazing run early in the season and improve overall offense of the team. Considering their roster, he made most out of the team in my opinion. If they fire him, he will find another team, likely to be an EPL team, have good run with them. and then Man City will realize how good of a coach he was.

CHOKE SLAM!!!!!!!!!!

April 30, 2008  08:12 PM ET

can they really get anyone better?

April 30, 2008  08:30 PM ET

he polished a turd with this team. I'm not sure who they think will be lining up to manage at Manchester City but whoever it is probably isn't going to do a better job. they need to sign some better players and Sven will take them higher. They might wanna start by beginning the season without a reserve level goal keeper starting.

What a mistake this will be

May 1, 2008  01:15 PM ET

This guys is a joke... he's just still pissed that SGE didn't start his Thai Nats, even though they couldn't play in the UK due to work permits because Thailand is one of the worst footballing nations in the world.

Is he just trying to appease the hoardes of Thai gamblers to bet on who the next manager will be?

He's a disgrace to the anything he remotely touches. I thought Abramovich was bad, but this guy is half Putin, half Pol Pot. If I didn't love City so much I would want them to be in shambles just so he'll realize what a moron he is.

i'm a big united fan, but this is ridiculous

They are dumb if they let Sven go. He brought all the talent to the club and set it up and this is how they repay him? This story is b.s. made up by fannation
