Sydor's Pens future uncertain

There's no question Darryl Sydor isn't happy about spending game nights in street clothes this spring. He's too proud, and still too capable, to not be bothered by being cast as a spare part. Nonetheless, he has not made a public issue of being a healthy scratch -- even when fellow defenseman Ryan Whitney went through some difficult games. Sydor has a year left on his contract and, while it's hard to predict what personnel moves the Penguins will consider this summer because of salary-cap issues, there's little reason to believe he won't spend it here. For starters, he has a no-trade clause in his contract, which means he would have to approve any deal general manager Ray Shero would work out.

With the injuries during the reg season, you can't blame them for wanting some depth for the playoffs. I feel bad for him though, he deserves to be in the lineup. Whitney hasn't done anything in the reg season or the playoffs.

Is there anything going on in the western conference. C'mon fannation.

joe:
To answer your question: No, there's nothing going on because the series are both going to be sweeps.

If they send him down to the Baby Pens...He won't have this problem.

Darryl Sydor, a great character guy with a lot of experience but I'm affraid his wheels are falling off. He might want to seriously contemplate retirement after this season. He'd make a good coach some day.

I would love to see Sydor break back into the Pens line-up because he is a good solid defenseman with a lot of experience, but right now there is no room for him in it. Whitney is the only defenseman that could sit-out, but the Pens have invested their future and too much money in him for that to happen. When Brooks Orpik and Mark Eaton leave the team via free agency this summer, they will need Sydor again...Therefore, I think he will be back in Pittsburgh for next season unless he demands out.

Hey pop king I was informed it is not a question unless there is a question mark. So I guess my first posting should be irrelevent

OOPS forgot the period........................

Too bad. Darryl Sydor is one of my favorite players all time. 2 cups 2 finals and that crawling back to the bench in 2000 along with shot-blcoking machine credentials in 2004. Gotta love him.
I hope he can convince his coach to paly one more game in the Cup finals for the Pens when they will win it all in June so he gets hsi name up there one more time.

If he had played better when he had his opportunities, then this wouldn't have been an issue. they didn't sign him to sit in the stands, they thought he could contribute. He did not, and has not, and this year's version of the team can't be bothered to give him another chance, barring injury. I would think that if he is having issues with sitting out, then he would be willing to waive the No Trade Clause to go somewhere he'll play

April 30, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Who cares? This guy is too old to play the body and protect the front of the net, has never been a particularly good "defenseman" in his own end, and has lost three steps. The guy is O-L-D

April 30, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I agree with Durk.

April 30, 2008  02:47 PM ET

I'm not saying Sydor can still play at the top. He IS old. I'm just saying that it's too bad he could not make himslef last one more year to enjoy a last good run for the cup like Modano Roenick. I have a lot of respect for this guy and it's my right.
That said, he's eating a lot of $$ and if he can't make it anymore, he should retire.

April 30, 2008  03:43 PM ET

I'm sorry, but Sydor just didn't have it. I thought it was a good signing when they brought him in, but when he played it was usually just not very good. I'm not saying he's bad, but he hasn't played like he belongs among the top 6 defensemen on the Penguins. I'd like to see him play somewhere next season if the Penguins still don't have room for him.

Being that half the team is UFAs, I'm sure a lot of Pens' futures are uncertain. This is the least of their worries.

DMitch,

You don't think the Pens will try and keep Eaton? Big man in front of the net (although not as big as Gill, obviously).
