Scully considers retirement

Posted: Wednesday April 30, 2008 05:17AM ET

Vin Scully did not -- repeat, did not -- take the opportunity of receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting on Tuesday from Fordham University's WFUV Radio, where he got his start as a sportscaster in 1947, to announce his retirement as the voice of the Dodgers. He is 80 and said he felt fine. He still loves calling baseball. But his contract expires after this season, and he said he would follow the advice of his wife, Sandy, about continuing a run that began in Brooklyn in 1950 and has spanned the ownership of the O'Malley family, Rupert Murdoch and Frank McCourt.

One of the greatest announcer voices of all time! I remember listening to him and Garagiola on the Game of the Week on NBC when I was a child. Do whatever makes you happy Vin....you have definitely earned it! :-)

ATLfan15,
I couldn't agree with you more. I remember him from the Game of the Week on Saturdays as well. He is awesome!!!

Report Offensive Comment

Yes. Also remember Vin and Joe from Saturday's game of the week. What a privilege is was to listen to them. Vin and Joe or Bob Costas and Tony Kubek. Just don't make like those anymore.

how bout the fact that he doesn't need another guy in the booth with him. props to the Dodgers for not sticking someone in there with him. i could listen to the soothing sounds of Vin all day.

don't get me wrong- he is an icon.....
but seriously- just retire.
You got plenty of $, a great reputation, a Hall of famer......
Enjoy your GREATgranchildren, play golf, travel the world-
there's more to life than calling a baseball game

And ps- we don't tune in to games because of you, they will go on with or without you

I thought he had gone away a long time ago. Nice announcer.

Stay Vin....

I can remember turning off the sound on televised games and turning on the radio to listen to Vin Scully instead of whatever stiffs they had doing the televison broadcast. He was always a joy to listen to, there will never be another like him.

He ought to retire that thing living on his head.........

what a bad rug.

Report Offensive Comment

Many people, myself included, indeed tune in to listen to Vin Scully. He is simply the best. Keep it coming.

You better beat them now. Their farm system is LOADED and they are a relatively young team now. Althought we don't really know how old Furical is.....their SS & 2B are playing well in AA.

I've been a Dodger fan since 1955 and lived about two blocks from where Vin lived in Washington Heights, NYC. He talked about his childhood during a game and when I had the chance to meet him we talked about the neighborhood, he couldn't have been nicer. A great guy, with a great intelligent classy way of describing a game, and a great voice. He will be greatly missed when he finally decides to hang up the microphone.

A truly great broadcaster. Don't count him out, he still has it.

Mr. Scully paints a picture during the game. When he does leave he will be missed. I attended a game at Dodger stadium and listened to him on the radio it was a thing of beauty......

Here is just a sample of his many masterpeices:
And another drive into high right-center, at the wall, running, and watching it go out! Believe it or not, four consecutive home runs, and the Dodgers have tied it up again! ???

After giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth inning, the Dodgers led off the bottom half with a walk to Kenny Lofton; Rudy Seanez then worked the count to 3-1 against Nomar Garciaparra.

??? And a high fly ball to left field, it is a-way out and gone! The Dodgers win it 11-10! (chuckles) Unbelievable! ???

As the crowd cheered, Scully closed 84 seconds later with a simple,

??? I forgot to tell you???the Dodgers are in first place. ???

I am a huge Dodger fan but I must say Vin is one of the only things tying the current franchise to its storied past. The Dodgers used to win with class, win with home grown talent, and retain a strong link to its heritage. Even when they didn't win, they used to have a "lovable losers" type of an image. Now, the ownership has changed twice, the class is gone, and the "lovable loser" image is also gone. I respect McCourt for trying to keep the link to history alive by renovating rather than building a new stadium and prioritizing home grown talent over free agents. But once Vin and Tommy retire, we will be left with a classless front office and nothing that ties the team to the past. Hopefully Torre and the kids can start something special one last time before Vinny retires.

There is only ONE true announcer and Vince Scully is his name - all others are mere shadows and cheap imitations of his greatness.

Vin is the GREATEST voice ever and either he will hang them up after this season or only do home games which means about 70 games. I wish if he decided to stay that he would do home RADIO, but unfortunately that likely will not happen. The day he announces his retirement will be one of the saddest days, if not the saddest in the history of Los Angeles.
My gut says he doesn't retire, but does home games on tv. I think if he completely retired and left the game which still gives him goosebumps that he would regret it.
When Johnny Carson retired, afterward many thought it was too early and led to his faster decline.
Only time will tell.

This would truly be a sad day here in L.A. Vin Scully is without a doubt one of the best baseball announcers ever. In fact almost all of my dodger memories involve Vin Scully making the call (She is... GONE!).

I also read someone say here that we don't tune in because of Vin and that the games will go on. Both of those are true, to a certain extent. But I can say this: that when Chick Hearn passed away, Laker games never sounded the same again and niether will the Dodgers...

if Vin leaves a little bit of the glory years go too..
Vin and all his tangents and random stories make the experience of watching a ballgame that much better. Vin cant retire till LAD brings a championship home GO BLUE!!
