Why Redskins passed on Merling

The Redskins could have addressed a need by drafting Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling in the first round. But Merling recently underwent sports hernia surgery, which made them wary. Instead, he went No. 32 overall to Miami. If Merling proves to be great, the Redskins' decision to trade down and hoard receivers looks like bad value. If he's a relative bust, it looks like great value.

Sports hernia isn't really a big deal. I've had to get surgery twice for it. It would only effect his immediate impact depending on when he got it done.

I miss Pacman.........where is the post? Help!

April 30, 2008  08:06 AM ET

The Redskins did an awesome job of setting up the new West Coast system for the future. DLine is still a huge question, but now what happens to Santana Moss or Randel El.........I think Randel will stay and Moss gets dropped June 1st.

Cowboys.......Santana Moss??? Looks like a nice fit.

April 30, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Moss to Dallas? Hmm. Would love to see him burn your their secondary for a change.

April 30, 2008  08:14 AM ET

I don't understand the Redskins building process or plan. As an Eagles fan, it only serves my team that they are regularly rebuilding or changing up key personnel...but it has to be frustrating as a Washington fan..........there lack of stability in any given position.

April 30, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Hortag, the Redskins building process is that we have a new, 1st time head coach who is installing a WCO rather than the previous Redskins forte of HB dive, HB dive, 3 yard slant route and punt. Our defense has ranked in the top 10 3 out of the last 7 years while our offense has never been better than 19th.

Zorn is being given complete control as to what he needs to run the team. We have a lot of holes, and WR was a huge one. A WR did not have a touchdown catch until Week 10 last year... think about that.

Next year, I and all other Redskins fans will see a huge emphasis on the defensive side of the ball; DLine and LB. If they don't, well then your guess is as good as mine as what to what our rebuilding process is.

The NFC East is looking like another tough year. I'm just glad that the Cowboys have 5 CB's and no more Jacques Reeves. Now I just have to devise a plan to get rid of OLB ROY WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!! (He just pretends to be a SS)

April 30, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Cowboys.......Santana Moss??? Looks like a nice fit.

America's Legend

The Cowboys could use another veteran receiver - never really considered S. Moss. I can't remember any recent Cowboy trades with other NFC East teams - not that it couldn't happen.

This was a statement draft for new coach Jim Zorn. The Skins started by drafting 3 players (who are all over 6 feet tall) who make their living catching the football for first downs and TDs. Devin Thomas, Fred Davis (TE from USC) and Malcolm Kelly. What Zorn is really saying with this draft is this: this is MY TEAM NOW, and if I fail or succeed, I AM GONNA DO IT MY WAY. Rookie WRs don't usually have a big impact right away, but in time, the Redskin offense should be deadly in the redzone. QB Jason Campbell must have been peeing his pants with joy over these draft selections.

April 30, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Redskins will do well. They would have done much better except for the "sacred cow" Gibbs and the stupid player moves before he got here. But Gibbs is a holy cow among the idiot Skins fans and media and I get cursed for saying anything about him. They will excell if they throw the ball in the pass happy NFL.

NCL2009

I can understand what your saying. But since 2002, the Redskins have had 5 out of 7 years with losing records. Very up and down in the last 3 years.

As an Eagles fan, I'm very familiar with the West Coast Offense. But consistency in WR and a line that can give the QB time in the pocket. Timing,

I think its gonna be another tough year for Washington. THE NFC EAST is the toughest division to try and rebuild in...every team in our division are just monsters.

April 30, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Man...my comments are dumping out.

What i was saying was that a WFO requires timing, timing, timing...which requires consistency at your QB, and WR positions and a line that will give your arm pocket protection.

April 30, 2008  09:27 AM ET

AL, you've gone off the deep end this time sir. Moss being cut on June 1st? Come on, we all know that's not happening, Moss is still the best WR on the Skins. Thomas and Kelly most likely will not be able to come in week 1 and produce big numbers, hardly and rookie WR's do. Moss is staying in D.C. and will help bring along the 2 rookie WR's; Moss and ARE are the only real veteran WR's the Skins have with any experience, so neither one are going anywhere. The Skins will most likely carry 5 to 6 WR's on the roster, those are: Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, Mix, and possibly Thrash. Then we'll have 1 or 2 WR's on the practice squad like Horace Gant or another young WR. I'm not counting Mathis either who will be on the team as a KR/PR specialist.

April 30, 2008  10:07 AM ET

I'm just saying. Randel El has what....4yrs on his contract and Santana's is going to expire soon. I know I am going a little far but it could happen. Wait and see what happens when Moss has a physical.

What about TE Cooley? Are they going to try to utilize a Two TE sets alot or something? I like Fred Davis but I respect the hell out of Cooley......

April 30, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I've been a Skins fan for 25 yrs. Hold the applause and/or jeers. They would NOT part w/ Moss. That's stupid. He's electrifying. I can see them getting rid of Randel El or reducing his role first long before Moss. I loved their draft! I was a little surprised they ignored the D-Line... but being that I clearly remember (and dearly miss!) the days of passing to Monk, Clark, and Sanders... I was thriled to see their first three pics. Their defense has been good for the past few yrs and I think will continue to be, even w/o Def Coach Williams. They need to bring back the killer offenses of old and I think they picked the right guys to help w/ it. And I hope Colt Brennan comes in and proves his critics wrong! I'm excited about the upcoming year. Then again, I'm excited every year. We can ALL agree that Football Season is the best by far!!!!

April 30, 2008  11:05 AM ET

can't see the skins partying with Moss. you can't expect the rookies to step in and fix the ship right away. Moss is the threat.

April 30, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Yes, AL, you can expect many more 2 TE sets to be run by Zorn with the addition of Davis. I would expect many of these sets to come in the red zone, because it's going to be difficult for defenses to guard both Cooley and Davis, along with either Davis or Kelly possibly being in the game. That's 3 or possibly 4 targets over 6'2", which will help our red zone offense out tremendously.

April 30, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Ahhh, let the 2nd guessing begin. Wouldn't all 31 teams regret not drafting Merling if he proves to be great. As good as I thought the Redskins draft was, only time will tell if it was a great draft.

April 30, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Um, this message forgets to mention one thing. If Merling ends up being a great player it doesnt mean the REdskins blew it...only if two of the second rounds end up being busts will that be the case. If Merling is good and THomas and Kelly are good then everybody wins. WE don't need MErling, contrary to popular belief. Would he have helped? sure, but we dont need him to be a championship team. With Chris Wilson, Daniels, and of course Andre Carter, our DEs are fine, if healthy. Also added a few DEs in rookie free agency, one in the draft, and may add some veteran DEs. HTTR!!!
