Melrose to coach Lightning?

Not sure how many caught this little nugget coming out of the Satellite Hot Stove segment on CBC Saturday night during the second intermission of the Montreal-Philadelphia game, but Al Strachan, who works for the Sun Media outlets in Canada, stated that John Tortorella will be fired as head coach once Oren Koules gains control of the team. But the stunner was to hear that Barry Melrose, who has all of three years of NHL coaching experience and none since the 1994-95 season with Los Angeles, is Koules' first choice for the team's new coach.

Dude looks like one of the Baldwin brothers in that picture.

April 30, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Wow. The Lightning are going to go from Fonzie to Billy Ray Cyrus behind the bench. Al Strachan write for a fishwrap called the Toronto Sun, aand he's always lobbing out little granades to get attention. Half of the players inthe NHL don't even talk to this guy because he's so full of $h!+.

April 30, 2008  08:29 AM ET

lmao@fishwrap...

April 30, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Surely this is a lark...Melrose coached a stacked Los Angeles team.Since then hes just been a tool on tv telling us how much he doesnt know. If this is remotely true it will be Vinny saying rut roh....see ya.

April 30, 2008  08:48 AM ET

hopefully he does a better job on the bench then he does behind the mike. "san jose is gonna win the cup, they are the best team in hockey".? oh, last time i checked, they TRAILED THE SERIES 3-0.

April 30, 2008  09:14 AM ET

lol fishwrap. i heard a rumor that the lightning need a circus act and are willing to give sean avery the $ and years he wants (seriously). melrose hates avery so i hope this rumor is true.

Al Strachan has about as much Hockey sense as Lindros does after a Scott Stevens body check.
The Hot Stove segment on CBC should also be re-named. "Tiny Talent Time".

April 30, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Does he even remember how to coach anymore? He's been out of the loop for so long he's stiff with rust. I'm affraid the game's left him way behind.

April 30, 2008  10:08 AM ET

YAY!!! The mullet is back!!!!

April 30, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Melrose cannot leave ESPN then hockey will never be talking about again!!!!!!!!!

April 30, 2008  10:33 AM ET

If Oren Koules offers Melrose a head coaching job and if Melrose actually takes the job in that perennial Cup contending hockey hotbed of Tampa [given he makes enough money watching hockey on TV to send the all of Ol' Dirty Ba$+ard's kids through Yale], Gary Bettman will have to mandate they both visit Betty Ford immediately.

April 30, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Ha! HA! HA! I still can't believe what I'm reading. BArry in Tampa. Yeah, for a tan!
Come on, he only took the Kings to the Finals in 1993 because Gretz was playing for them and took charge of practice and locker room motivation for him!

Fannation, always cracking me up at breakfast time.... Gotta love it!

Al Strachan is, and has been, an idiot for a long time. He never says anything of note, other than the stuff he makes up, like Popking said. This guy is the least respected of all hockey journalists, and the only reason he still has a job is because he works for the Sun, the least respected of all newspapers. He's garbage, never, ever, ever believe anything that big idiot says.

April 30, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Little idiot..as in weasel....and nice comb over Al.

April 30, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Barry, before being interviewed, get a new suit without the stripes please, and a hair cut.

April 30, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Barry is better at sound bites.... I know these guys start pining to get back behind the bench..... but it's a wise man to know his limitations. Not that hoser Barry is a wise man, or anything.

April 30, 2008  12:06 PM ET

He can have Engblom and Darren Pang as his assistants too. Come on, Barry's not gonna coach anyone. He's got it made at ESPN. He's all they have for a hockey analyst. Why do you think he didn't go to VERSUS? And why would he leave a cush job for one that he knows will be stressful and he will eventually be fired from?
