Source: D'Antoni out as Suns coach
Mike D'Antoni, the NBA's Coach of the Year for the 2004-05 season and the man credited with re-invigorating fast-break basketball in a league gone stale, will not be back to coach the Phoenix Suns for the 2008-09 season, SI.com has learned. Sources within the organization confirm that D'Antoni feels he does not have the backing of upper management--specifically owner Robert Sarver and general manager Steve Kerr -- and considers the situation irredeemable.

This is a great basketball coach who sometimes let's his emotions get the best of him. I hope this was a spur of the moment (no pun intended) decision that was made out of frustration so that he can reconsider a few weeks/days from now. As far as the whole Steve Kerr debriefing meeting that D'antoni neglected to attend; Kerr makes solid points as to how to improve the team. Play better/more consistent defense, find an heir apparent for Steve Nash, and create a better bench rotation. They have ALL of the tools in Phoenix to win a championship. It's a matter of how much longer Nash can play at a high level and some improvements on defense.

Too bad Suns......really thought they had a shot with Shaq in the middle. I retract all my posts from the last week. Blow em up!

This is bad news for the Suns and their fans. They are a solid team that got a crappy draw this year in the playoffs. Yes, they didn't play so well as they did in the playoffs, but neither did the Mavericks and is Avery Johnson still the coach in Dallas? Yes.
To get rid of D'Antoni will only implode the Suns further than they already did on the Shaq trade. His free throws are a big part of the blame for the Game 5 loss. Yes, I know the four turnovers in the last two minutes was huge, but so were all the missed opportunities from the line.

I think the Suns will not win it all next year, with the team as it is. Especially since other west teams (hornets, lakers, blazers) will probably get even better. But who do you think should they get rid of? especially since noone is gonna take shaq...

What about the GM who traded for fat Shaq and his oversized contract? That's a franchise killing trade..... I guess he gets off the hook by firing D'Antoni.... anyone in Phoenix buying this?

Won't be long before other teams consider hiring D'Antoni. Coaching in the NBA really is like musical chairs.

As much as I dislike the Suns (not D'Antoni), I think he's doing the right thing. A coach's job depends on the full support of the owner and GM. If he doesn't feel he has that, then he knows his job is for nothing.
This makes me think he wasn't on board with the whole Shaq trade to begin with. This was a Steve Kerr decision with the backing from the owner and now that it's not working, D'Antoni doesn't want to be blamed for it.
I hear there are plenty of open coaching gigs in the league right now so he'll be fine.

Yep, it's the coach's fault that Shaq's fat arse goes 9-20 from the line, it's his fault the GM traded for a 20 million dollar a year cancer, it's his fault the GM underestimated Marion's value. You think Marion could have helped out on Parker, given his unique skill set? I happen to like Steve Kerr alot, but for D'Antoni to take the fall for this is ridiculous.

How do you get a crappy draw in the playoffs? The numbers line up and you play who you play. I always said the Shaq trade was a bad trade because they tried to slow down to appease Shaq, when their game is to get out and run. What they really need to concentrate on is defense, (especially Nash who plays none) because without it, you can't win a championship!!! Shaq needs to retire.

Who are the Suns gonna blame next year when they're ousted? New Orleans is only going to get better, The Lakers are doing this without Bynum, If the Rockets can ever keep Yao and TMac on the same floor who knows, Utah is only going to get better, Portland will have Oden and Roy next year. The only thing we can count on next year is that Shaq's fat arse will show up out of shape for the beginning of the season.

Somewhere... Pat Riley is sitting with this HOF laurels and laughing his *** off. Both the Heat and the Suns are now in the same position, only the Heat have the best chance at getting the #1 pick in the first round draft.
If this story is true, there are many teams that will seek D'Antoni. The Raptors, Knicks, heck, even the Heat are in need of a Coach! Maybe Steve Kerr can swing this one by Pat Riley.
The situation needs time... Clean out your lockers, play some golf, THINK about it, then come back with a decision... Both sides (Coach and upper Mgmt).

It's probably better for D'Antoni to get out of here. He was never fully supportive of the shaq trade and HE was the one who tried his best to make it work which I think he did the best he could do with an old Shaq.
Wherever D'Antoni goes, he will be appreciated.
But forget about coming to Toronto. Colangelo strongly stated yesterday "All things should be put to rest right now when I say that I have absolutely no intention of making a coaching change at this time". That's that lol

D Antoni is a good coach, so he'll find a job soon...cant blame him for all the misfortune...it was dumb to get rid of Marion and bring in Shaq.

I think both Allas (no D was intentional) and the Suns both panicked after the LAKERS acquired Gasol. They pulled the rigger on trades to keep up with the Jackson's and made huge errors. San Antonio (who I depise) on the other hand made a trade to get Thomas to give them some toughness in the middle, but not to alter the way thet play. It was an intelligent trade, not a panick trade and he helped them a lot in games 4 & 5.
