Wagner rips Mets teammate

Posted: Thursday May 01, 2008 05:53AM ET

Amid the rubble of a 13-1 loss to the last-place Pirates that started with Oliver Perez's second-inning meltdown, Billy Wagner said what many of his teammates appeared to be thinking about the left-hander. Wagner blasted Perez for lasting just 12/3 innings, matching his career low, against one of the worst teams in baseball. "Perez has honestly got to step up and know that we've just used every guy in our bullpen the night before," a visibly disgusted Wagner said. "He can't come out there and decide that, gee, he hasn't got it today and so be it." Asked if talking to Perez about his notoriously short attention span was like trying to talk to a wall, Wagner pointed his finger and said: "Pretty much."

It is a long season.....just like last year.

Who does he think he is, a New York fan or New York Post columnist? Geez...

No worse trade him to Seattle........... He has enough balls to make reamrks like this

I love it when NY teams have problems...it is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Poor Willy. Why do the Shmets always have these kind of jerks on their team?

TRADE WAGNER - He's a trouble-maker

And he ain't no Mariano Rivera.

blame him?.........guy lasts less than two innings. Man up.

Thank you Wagner. Its about feckin time someone on that team said something. What Wagner shouldve done is rip another 12 guys on the team. Philly fans can say what you want about Billy Wagner but the guy is honest.

FMSD - Amen to that. I wish more veteran players would do this stuff. Pro sports has followed the rest of the country in being to PC. Teams often respond positivly to this kind of thing especially if its a veteran ballclub - usually b/c many others feel the same way but don't want to say anything. I'd love it if Jeter would go ape crap one day and start ripping people that deserve it (Farnsworth for one.) Who knows...it may turn around the performance.

I guess you can say that Oliver Perez won't be back in their rotation next season. Neither will Pedro's hamstring and El Duque's bunion.
Who are the Mets going to get next year to pitch for their team? Will any free agent sign next with the Mets knowing how their fans treat the players?
Wagner is absolutely correct for calling out Perez. Perez needed to throw the ball over the plate and he could not throw a strike even if the plate was 2 feet wide!
Wagner is the leader of the Mets locker room and needs to get his point across to Mets management and to Oliver Perez. If Perez does not improve his control then...
the Mets need to bring up Jonathon Niese, a 21 year old lefty from Double A. Niese impressed the Mets during spring training and is 2-2 with a 1.38 ERA at Binghampton.
C'mon, Omar let's see what he's got!

Joba...apparently you need to worry about your Yankees. Are you not the same fellow who bragged about Hughes and Kennedy less than a month ago? Now Hughes has night vision problems, shadow problems, oblique muscle problems.... his problem is he has no heart and nickel for a head. Don't get me started on the "Next Tom Glavine" Ian Kennedy

Report Offensive Comment

one other thing Joba, please don't knock Mets fans booing. Yankee fans have driven players out of town because of it. Heck, ya even booed Derek Jeter. DEREK JETER! You guys even boo Arod and all he's done is be the best player bar none on that team.

FMSD, you are right. Wagner should have kept going though.

And all these MUTS fans talk about the Phillies pitching

Wagner is a hot head with a disconnect between his mouth and his brain. In what universe does ripping your own teammate to the press have positive results? Also, maybe Billy should keep quiet about how long a pitcher can last, seeing as after he throws about 20 pitches he becomes utterly useless and a joy for opposing hitters to face. Wagner is not a pressure pitcher, either with the Phils or the Mets, down the stretch you can't count on him for anything but stupid comments about other people, but never himself.

well said on all counts, real and fabulous.

As long as NY teams continue to pay big $$, there will always be players willing to sign regardless of how the fans treat them. I'm sure a few million dollars helps the players dry their tearful eyes after taking regular ribbings from the fans.
