Cuban kicking tires on Cubs?

On other visits to Wrigley Field, he sat in the bleachers. But on Wednesday night, Mark Cuban sat in Tribune Co.'s front-row seats next to the Cubs' dugout. Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has publicly expressed interest in owning the Cubs, but it is still uncertain if he could raise the expected $700 million it would take or whether he could get approval from other MLB owners. Tribune Co. hopes to sell the team by the end of the year, and several groups have expressed interest, although Cuban is the most visible individual suitor. He declined to talk with media before the game, except to say he wanted to enjoy the Cubs and a beer. Cuban's timing is curious because this is about the point when ownership said it would open its financial books to prospective buyers.

Why not Atleast he would try to build a winner. His passion for winning could be the answer.

Kids and posting stupid sexual remarks......get a life!

I agree with both of the above comments.
Regarding Cuban, it wouldn't hurt to have a colorful owner in Chicago. It appears that Hank in the Bronx is going to fill that bill quite nicely in the AL

Someone should tell Mark...the Cubs are not named after him. Go buy Virgin airlines and leave the sports world alone.

May 1, 2008  08:19 AM ET

let him buy the Cubs its good for baseball. Good for everybody.

May 1, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Wow, just think: It is indeed possible that the Cubs could become even more annoying than they already are!

May 1, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Oh you mean like your posting is?

May 1, 2008  09:06 AM ET

I can't stand Cuban, but he is all about winning. that is a lot more than you can say about some owners.

May 1, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Cuan is annoying.....he would totally fit in Chicago. He hasn't had success buying a winner in Dallas, what makes him think he could buy one with the most notorious failure of a franchise in baseball?

May 1, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Sell the Mavs and buys the Cubs.......

May 1, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Please Please stay out of baseball. I would hate to have to hear his name or see his face any more. Basketball season is long enough!

Winning the NBA Championship in 2006, unsuccessful? Hmmm that's an interesting comment.

May 1, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Actually that was a typo..they made it, didn't win it, have no idea what I was thinking. But I did find this interesting

On January 14, 2000, Cuban purchased a majority stake in the NBA Dallas Mavericks basketball team for $285 million from H. Ross Perot, Jr.[39][40]

In the 20 years before Cuban bought the team, the Mavs had a winning percentage of 40%, and playoff record of 21-32. In the six years following, the team has won 69% of their regular season games and have reached the playoffs each season. The Mavs playoff record with Cuban is 39 wins and 40 losses, including their first trip to the NBA Finals in 2006, where they lost to the Miami Heat.

So the "unsuccessful" comment is still bogus.

The way he canned Avery he looks like a Steinbrenner in the making, maybe not so much in the press presure on his players.

May 1, 2008  11:00 AM ET

He wants to win. You can't knock someone for that. I'd love for him to buy the Mets. At least he'd kick someone tail for the way they're playing.

May 1, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Avery was not getting the best out of that team though Allstarz. I like the guy but sometimes you need to make a change.

May 1, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I am not knocking firing Avery, sometimes you need a change is right, though Avery had a good regular season record. He just strikes me as an owner in the same vein as the Steinbrenners, that is a mixed bag.

I don't follow basketball, so don't really know a lot about him or the Mavs. The Cubs are doing well this season again, and seem to be on the right track. If this guy can bring it all together than I'm all for it. If he's an embarrasment, then he can stick to basketball.
