Is Iginla the new Ray Bourque?

It's fair to ask whether Jarome Iginla isn't becoming the new Ray Bourque, the iconic team player who has to look elsewhere for a chance at winning the Stanley Cup. He's still a peak player, but the days when he could regularly log 25 to 30 minutes a game are growing shorter. Lord knows he's been the loyal son for the Flames. Once more, he took a contract that was millions of dollars -- and several years in term -- below his true market value to remain in Calgary. Maybe that shouting match during the playoffs with coach Rich Preston was simply some overblown media construct trotted out for a slow day? Or perhaps it shows Iginla's patience with the direction of the Flames is growing shorter, his willingness to laugh off another misdirected season is wearing thin?

Wow...imagine what a rustle an Iginla Sweepstakes would create in the NHL if he wants out of Calgary?
Unfortunately all you would hear from the Leafs is..."We are not worthy, we are not worthy."

Just imagine the Flames without Iginla...yikes.

Guys like Jarome should be treasured. Willing to play for less to stay somewhere they presumably like.

I think the single thing I truly dislike about sports in general these days is the fact that players rarely stay their career with the team "that brung 'em" so to speak.

That's why Sakic, Yzerman and Modano are/were so special. Obviously they got their cups with those teams but I also don't ever recall any of them asking for a trade.

For sure Jarome's situation is very much like Bourque's. But if Jarome does not ever win a Cup (and there is no guarantee the team he would end up with would win one) he would not be the first great player to play a career and never sip from Lord Stanley's stein.

Jarome had his chance and he was too busy daydreaming about holding the Cup than working to win it - he vanished with two chances to clinch it and did nothing but whine at the refs.

Ray Bourque never went apes**t dirty on opposing players like this guy did in the playoffs last year vs. Detroit.

May 1, 2008  10:51 AM ET

SEC - are you delusional?

Iginla is the main reaosn this club, which is embarassingly thin on offensive talent, even makes the playoffs. And dirty? Please. Do you even watch hockey?

This guy is among the most respected in the league for his talent and how he plays the game. He has never been mentioned as a dirty player... not once.

Get a clue.

May 1, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Comparing apples and oranges here, aren't we?

May 1, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Yeah, I watch hockey. Try and tell me that crap he and his guys pulled last year vs. the Wings was clean. Doesn't paint him as a dirty player overall but he's capable of it.

The guy is respected and deservedly so but he's revered to a point where I have no clue what the hell the "experts" are smoking. Kipper's more important to that bunch than he is.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Typical stupid Sun story.

Oops... Calgary Herald, hehe.

May 1, 2008  12:37 PM ET

iginla is a cancer....send him to NJ...(are my jedi mind tricks working yet?)

May 1, 2008  03:36 PM ET

I agree bostongm, no reason to pull the alarm yet. He's in a good place in Calgary - winning-minded organization. They need a few tweeks, trade Tanguay for some reliable offense, give Keenan one more chance but not more if he annoys the players more than usual.

May 1, 2008  06:09 PM ET

what??no trade bait,bostongm.lol
Hatcher,Knuble and kukonen straight up.This guy is a warrior,my m.v.p.

May 1, 2008  08:57 PM ET

bostongm: i would trade zetterberg, datsyuk, fippulua or however you spell his name, hudler and throw in dan cleary, all for iginla before i'd ever give up my chance to hear bob cole call a play off game, that being said, yes all canadien announcers are homers! and i'm not from canada!

May 2, 2008  01:50 AM ET

As talented as Iginla is, part of the problem lies with the man in the mirror. I was disappointed that the Wings were going to have to play Nashville in the playoffs in Round 1, rather than Calgary. Had we faced the Flames, I had *zero* worry about losing any more than one game. For some reason, whenever Iginla plays the Wings, he is *completely* neutralized by the Wings, especially our great defense (Lidstrom, Chelios, Rafalski, etc.). The truly elite players are able to rise above their own shortcomings come playoff time, and Iginla hasn't, to my knowledge, been able to do this yet.

Don't get me wrong: Iginla is absolutely *essential* to the Flames, and is a Franchise Player Supreme. Yes, he could use a bit better supporting cast around him, but even so: Iginla needs to be the one who inspires others around him to greatness by being the unstoppable force he's supposedly able to be. If he wants a Cup so badly, he needs to assert himself so that he strikes *fear* into other teams with his potency...not assurance that they'll easily be able to shut him down.

May 2, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Yeah Boagman more or less hits it on the head. I love Iginla, bought Center Ice the past few years just to watch him and the Flames and listen to the Canadian crowds and announcers, but there are times when he disappears and when that happens they basically have to hope for a Kipper shutout. Hopefully they'll be a little stronger next year.

Can't even imagine what he'd be worth on a trade market. You'd be getting into Kobe Bryant territory there.

May 3, 2008  06:55 PM ET

As a Wild fan I think I can say with confidence that Iginla is the most respected player we play against, there is no one even close to Ignila and I would give my right arm to get him on our team.

May 4, 2008  01:44 AM ET

send him to Montreal.. Iginla Koivu Kovalev... ohhhhh that would be pretty! sure some shifting around of the positions, but damn it'd be worth it..

May 4, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Bourque was a legend. One of the all time great defensemen. But, Bourque never was enough to carry his team. He got manhandled by Lemieux and company two years in a row in the Wales Conf. Finals with a trip to the Cup Finals on the line.

I always wanted him to win the Cup, but I think that the way he got it was a little cheap. Good for him, but it would have been better had he been able to take advantage of the chances he'd been given earlier in his career.

Iginla has plenty of time to win a Cup. He's not really "a Bourque" unless he gets traded a few miles from the end of the road merely to get a chance to win one.
