Cuban offered Donn Nelson Mavs job

A source disclosed Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban wasted no time in calling Rick Carlisle regarding replacing Avery Johnson on Dallas' sidelines. President of basketball operation Donn Nelson, whose claim to fame is "discovering" Dirk Nowitzki, was given first crack at the job but demurely declined, I'm informed.

donn nelson?
whatever-
why not get bob knight's son, or eddie suttons son.....or what about George W Bush? he's a great legacy......

May 2, 2008  09:19 AM ET

MAYBE MARK SHOULD JUST GIVE IT UP AND TRY HIS LUCK IN MLB

May 2, 2008  09:19 AM ET

give johnson another chance it not his falf that the dallas last and it is not the time to change the coach because hw has been there about few years longer than nelson

May 2, 2008  09:21 AM ET

AVERY JUS COME TO SA YOU KNOW WE APPRECIATE YOU HERE

May 2, 2008  09:22 AM ET

keep johnson and add a asst that will help the players from being in losing trap

May 2, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Donnie has a lot coaching experiance and would probably be a great coach...and after all he is the guy (along with his dad) who outfitted this bunch....

May 2, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Another coach will inherit the same problem Avery was fired for. He will come in, win 55 games during the regular season, and be knocked out of the playoffs in the 1st or 2nd round. Dallas needs a CENTER. Until they get one, the only thing that will change is the names on the door.

May 2, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Nelson's father is still feuding with Cuban, with a lawsuit being decided this summer. How could anyone really see this happening? The Mav's may not be a great team, but they're not bad either. They need more than a new coach. This is not Avery Johnson's fault. It's not that easy.

May 2, 2008  10:11 AM ET

how about a center?? yeah...a CENTER...and dont trade young , talented PG's for old, slow pg's....

May 2, 2008  10:44 AM ET

What did Don Nelson do in the playoffs besides come close year after year. Don Nelson is not a good coach. Dallas needs defense and tough players and an owner that doesn't want so much attention

May 2, 2008  10:46 AM ET

NY POST story here guys so don't sweat over it.

May 2, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I still don't understand why Avery was fired!

May 2, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Donn Nelson was Don Nelson's assistant coach and took over on Nellie's drinking nights. (Think ejection in first quarter.) Donn Nelson was a great coach. Before he became Mavs' VP of basketball operations, he was a highly sought after coach. Mavs made him VP to keep him here.

Hey LF the Alamo is in San Antonio not Dallas. I guess we can't expect too much education from a Californian. I guess you've forgotten about SA's 4 championships. I won't even bring up the Rockets becuase you might get too confused. FYI what was California doing when we were "loosing" our battle for independence? Here's a hint The term "Mexico's b*tch" is in the answer.
