Mavs interested in Pitino?

Should Mike D'Antoni and the Suns soon part company, his name will be added to Mark Cuban's short list that ultimately may include Rick Pitino. I've been told he'd consider leaving Louisville for a third NBA chance, but the team would have to be in relatively good roster shape. I don't know; the thought of coaching Erick Dampier (11M/$12M/$13M) for the next three seasons might be a turn-off. It's not as if he can be traded. I doubt Cuban could package Dampier with Microsoft and get a good deal.

pitino is a college coach he doesnt know how to manage these spoiled millionaire ballers

Just bear in mind Mr Cuban that decisions Pitino made while with the Celtics resonated on long after he was gone.......

amen, like almost to this year!

May 2, 2008  07:41 AM ET

I think if he coaches the Mavs he will be fired in a few years. The team is getting older and I think Cuban is under the impression they are among the NBA's elite.

Let Pition ruined another NBA team stay in college basketball. You messed up my Celtics, we had Joe Johnson, and Billups and didn't give them time to develop.

May 2, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Pitino is a loser as far as his pro coaching skills. He destroyed the Celtics with his stupid draft selections. He couldn't teach a dog to sit. He praised Billups, drafted him and then threw him under the bus. That was probably the best thing that ever happened to Billups.

Actually the more I think about how much Pitino suxed the more I think Dallas should go ahead and hire him. Cuban needs a loser as big as he is to take the spotlight off him.

There are other coaches with better resumes that could be coach. Pitino has proved to be a failure in the NBA, how many more chances are you going to give the guy?

May 2, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Pitino needs to stay in college. He belongs there. The same goes with Calipari, in case that's where Cuban is going next.

May 2, 2008  10:00 AM ET

I Think it would depend on how much Pitino has learned from his failures. The guy can be a great coach, smart, disciplined, etc. He has an ego, of course. He would have more talent than he had in Boston. The question really is more about whether the players would buy in. If they would, he could absolutely be successful. That doesn't mean championship immediately, however, and the window is closing on Dallas. I would be stunned if he didn't eventually take another NBA job, wanting to prove he's better than his Boston experience, and he is. How good? Only time will tell.

No Rick, you'll never get out of the West. Why? 'Cause IT'S LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

May 2, 2008  10:12 AM ET

If Dallas can't or won't trade Dampier, it doesn't matter who coaches this team, the results will be the same.

Pitino is a college coach. bad move if cuban decides to hire him. the celtics experiment wasn't enough of learning experience?

May 2, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Louisville is a PERFECT place for pitino-
he is a Kentucky ICON....enjoys his horses & has a comfortable & wealthy life

NBA= pain in the ****

May 2, 2008  10:44 AM ET

I don't think Pitino is dumb enough to try the NBA again......

May 2, 2008  10:53 AM ET

One more NY POST story and my weekend plans will exclude visiting FN.

May 2, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Pitino already flamed-out in Boston, and ran back to college ball as fast as his legs would carry him.

Why would Cuban - oh, that's right we're talking about Mark Cuban. ...never mind.

I guess Pitino will be trading in his tailor-made suits for Lucchese and Tony Lama boots, Stetson and Toby Keith cowboy hats and a closet full of Wrangler jeans.

May 2, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Pitino can't coach in the NBA (although he is a great college coach) this was already established in Boston!

May 2, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Ask Boston about Pitino first.

May 2, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I'm pretty confident that Rick Pitino is too intelligent to go through this again.

May 2, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Hey Cuban, if Pitino is going to make the Mavericks SuckEven More, hire him! Have him rub off on the Cowboys while he's there too!
