Inside Syracuse's football woes

The Orange once again find themselves in a sorry state, having gone 7-28 the past three years under Greg Robinson, 2-19 in Big East play. Syracuse has lost its recruiting pipelines on Long Island, in western Pennsylvania and parts of upstate New York. As the Big East improves and other college programs step up, there is serious concern Syracuse football may never again be a perennial Top 25 program. Don McPherson, who yesterday was one of the 13 former players and two coaches voted into the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, called on Syracuse fans to step up and questioned if Robinson is the right man to lead an Orange revival. Robinson is a classy guy who came to Syracuse with an impressive resume, having served most recently as the co-defensive coordinator at Texas. But the laid-back Southern California native is the antithesis of previous coach Paul Pasqualoni, who was fired by new athletic director Daryl Gross after consecutive 6-6 seasons.

Suddenly Paul Pasqualoni is looking good. This is sad and the decline has been taking place for years. Maybe they should move football outside? There wasnt one notable draft pick out of SU. Nothing worse then seeing them roughed up by Rutgers....uugghh

The Big East will be a pretty good conference this year with Pitt, UConn, Cinncy, and probably WVU all clearly contenders. Doesn't look good for Robinson's longevity at 'Cuse.

I would be one to think that Robinson IS NOT the man for the job.

May 2, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Syracuse should have stuck to an option type offense that Pasqualoni was running. The problem is that High School teams in New York State, typically, do not implement west coast passing offenses. If you watch NYS HS football you will see great running backs but mediocre QB's.

Also, Syracuse isn't exactly the most exciting place in America. It's not exactly a place you can sell to a recruit from out of state.

Woe is the 'Cuse. Bummer.

HOld on boys......there is some beautiful county in NY and in that area. Its the land of lakes. You like water sports and wide open country - cool. Syracuse holds a real friendly population only 4 hours out of NYC...where the not so friendly types live in a rat race. The campus area is really cool and is like its own little town. When the fans are good the Dome is packed to the rafters....
Its not the Bahamas, but it isnt that bad.

I meant when the FB team is good, the whole town is involved - oops
There is no question about the BB team and program and the attendance record.

May 2, 2008  03:59 PM ET

Who wants to play in the Carrier Dome that is located in the winter wonderland called Syracuse NY? Top talents don't want to come North unless they are playing at like BC. Syracuse's best days of fooling recruits are OVER!

McPherson is an idiot about other things(see link below on his ideas about "gender roles"), but he's right about the football program. How do the football facilities at SU compare to other D1 schools in a 200 mile radius?

oops - sorry about all the comments, I am a noobie as of today...

Robinson needs to go.

As an SEC football fan, I really dont know too much about 'Cuse football, but someone earlier made an extremely good point. If the local high school programs are not running an offense similar to the one the school is running, it becomes difficult to recruit tallented individuals because they cannot see their place on the team. Furthermore, it also takes those same offensive recruits that much longer to learn the offense so they're particuarly undable to contribute early. And, the west coast is a helluva offense to learn from scratch. Auburn had that problem with the West Coast offense too, that's why they have brought in an OC and the spread. As good as an offense looks on tv, it is only so because the players know how to run it.

I don't know about their situation, but 2 conference wins in 3 years - I suspect he's got 1, maybe 2 years tops before being shown the door (gotta give him 4-5 years to change over an offense an make a go of it).

As a Syracuse student, I have to say that this is the most pitiful football I have seen. On any stage. Players and coaches are not on the right page, and Robinson continues to baby them and tell them everything is going to be ok. I like that he is a player friendly coach, but when the only team you can beat consistently is Buffalo (and there have been close games), something needs to change.

When Gross announced that Robinson would be back for another year, we chanted as the SU/UMass basketball game that we wanted both of them out, and Gross wanted to get us kicked out of the Dome. We should be able to say anything we want, especially considering the way that this team and playing and the fact that it is spending and wasting a great deal of OUR money.

I know some coaches need 4-5 years, but Robinson is awful... the offense may be a little better with our new offensive coordinator, but the defense is going to be pathetic and we won't win more than a few games. I think Gross and Robinson both need to be fired, as the only teams that have improved are women's lacrosse and women's basketball... men's lacrosse came around this year but they have been disappointing the last couple years.
