Piniella loses it after Cubs loss

Posted: Friday May 02, 2008 07:51AM ET

Start to uncomfortable finish, manager Lou Piniella's postgame news conference Thursday lasted all of one minute -- depending on whether you count the string of profanities he uttered marching down the dreary hallway to the Cubs' clubhouse. A 4-3 loss to the Brewers -- a game that featured three runs off closer Kerry Wood during a ninth inning that included two questionable plays in the outfield -- set the stage for Piniella's first official meltdown of 2008. A question focusing on whether Piniella thought about shifting slick-fielding center fielder Reed Johnson to left -- in place of fresh-off-the-disabled-list Alfonso Soriano -- when he inserted defensive sub Felix Pie in center during the eighth inning lit Piniella's short fuse. "You're damn right I thought about it,'' Piniella said, his voice rising. ''You think I'm stupid or something?" As Piniella stormed away, the profanities came spilling out.

Gotta love Sweet Lou!

He will be forever missed in Cincinnati!!!

Sweet Lou may unleash a string of profanity every now and then but that's because he is so passionate about the game and I love that. However, yesterday's tirade doesn't even compare to his 'meltdown' on the umpire last year at Wrigley against the Braves....now THAT was classic Lou! :-)

I wish lou was still in the AL. I sure miss his spittle spewing tirades!

Report Offensive Comment

Actually, I've always thought Lou was a little stupid. The Yankees hired him because he was George's stooge. Why other teams hire this "baseball genius" is beyond me.

Pinella is great..... love his tantrums..... but Bobby Cox is the master with the record for ejections. The key: he doesn't throw bases & stuff like that, he just uses every word known to man & it's easy to read his lips. He's hysterical the **** he says!

Report Offensive Comment

I sure wish he was coaching Texas,,,we need his fire,,,,

I don't really blame him. Fukadome was safe at home and was called out, and in the 9th Wood couldn't get a call on the outside corner. The ump had different strike zones for both teams.

Lou can make any losing streak worth attending home games for. You'll never know when, how long, or what will set him off.

Nothing beats Lou chucking the 1st piece of equipment he touches during a blowup.

Good for you, Lou! You tell 'em press wusses where to stick it!

Gota to love Lou

Totally appropriate.....given that this week wat the 25th anniversary of Lee Elia's profanity laced meltdown. Maybe this was just Lou's tribute to Lee Elia.
Lou just needs to realize that managing the Cubs is ALWAYS going to be nothing but frustration......

Bronxbomb, the only idiots here are the Seattle Mariners senior management. They kicked Sweet Lou to the curb because Howard Lincoln tired of his demands. He's forgotten more about how baseball should be played and the types of players you need to have on your roster than they will ever know. We now have the gentler, kinder and more politically correct Mariners and they just plain suck. Sweet Lou, Griffey, Buhner, Edgar and the Big Unit still own this town.

When does Piniella not lose it?

Report Offensive Comment

Here's hoping that Sweet Lou has many more petulant tantrums before 2008 is through....

We need to find away to get Sweet Lou, Lloyd McClendon, Billy Martin, Bobby Cox, Don Zimmer and Tommy Lasorda on the same staff.

Lou....You da man! Come manage the Mets.
