Knicks president Donnie Walsh made preliminary contact with Avery Johnson yesterday to express interest in interviewing the fired Mavericks coach and is also monitoring the Suns' situation with Mike D'Antoni that could be resolved by the weekend, according to sources.

Keep the interviews going-

I think he'd be my first choice, so far- he's young, firey and will SIT a player who is dogging it. That's what we need in NY with our pathetic roster

as a mavs fan i would like to seriously recommend avery johnson for the post as next knicks coach, he's proven he can turn things around, just give him time.....

May 2, 2008  08:48 AM ET

us mavs would of kept him, but our owner is an idiot for letting him go....

AVERY DONT DO IT JUST COME BACK TO SA AND TAKE OVER THE REINGS WHEN POS LEAVES

May 2, 2008  09:23 AM ET

is it just me or is avery an overrated coach? i'm not sayin he's horrible, in fact i do think he is a very good coach, but when he took over in dallas they were already in a great position to contend with a great roster. do people actually think he would be able to turn around a troubled franchise like the knicks? wishful thinking no?

Avery; run as fast as you can away from this train wreck. It's a recipe for disaster.

" is it just me or is avery an overrated coach? "

more than any other sport, in the NBA you are at the mercy of your best player- Dirk is a top player and I really think he TRIES on defense- he's just not that good.....
- you cannot win in this league without you best player not only trying...but being EFFECTIVE on defense

if Avery comes to NY- he will fail (unfortunately) cause NY's best player- Crawford- is HORRIBLE on D- (and doesn't really try)
- but EVERYONE will fail, until the roster is turned over in 2-3 years....

Why I want him here is at least he can enstil and PROMOTE defense in some of our younger players

May 2, 2008  10:36 AM ET

I THINK ITS ALL IN EXPERIENCE AVERY LEFT SA BEFORE HE WAS READY TO. I THINK IF HE HAD WAITED ANOTHER YEAR OR TWO AND REALY HONED HIS COACHING STRATEGY WE WOULDNT BE TALKING ABOUT HIM GETTING LET GO. BUT THIS IS A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE CHALK IT UP AS A LOSS FIND A NEW TEAM AND MOVE ON

May 2, 2008  10:38 AM ET

If the Knicks don't get Mark Jackson I would prefer Avery or just anybody coaching defense. I DO NOT want to see D'Antoni get the job.....I do not like these coaches that "run and gun" and don't play defense.

Oh this is lovely. Three NY Post stories. **** this. I am done.

It's you. He's a great coach. He puts in all the hard work and has the fire that a coach needs. Like JGB said, it's the players game. You can't fire them and keep the coach. I see Dirk as a more talented Gasol (not much more). He can't carry a team and needs to be the second or third scorer. I think AJ wanted him gone after last year's exit, but Cuban wouldn't trade him. AJ's no fool, he saw the lack of heart. I say AJ needs to go to a team with young players, bring in a good free agent or two and you'll see a huge turn around both in effort and wins. Just look at Scott in NO.

good to know ;)

May 2, 2008  11:55 AM ET

He'd be better off with the Bulls and they would be a better team with him as their coach.

May 2, 2008  11:58 AM ET

but i think if you read past the first sentence that i posted, you would see that my argument is not whether he's a good coach or not, but whether he would be capable of turning the knicks into a playoff team

May 2, 2008  12:23 PM ET

"us mavs would of kept him, but our owner is an idiot for letting him go...."

I fully disagree. Avery is an OK coach, but for our team he was too intense and had a habit of overcoaching to the point of disrupting the flow of the game. I respect the fact Avery has a system he likes, but Kidd was brought in to be the General on the floor. Avery clearly never allowed this to happen, nor did he do a very good job of developing Devin Harris nor Damp (who Avery flatly stated he could get the most out of). Add to that the fact that he has been out-coached in each of the last 3 playoff series and it was clearly time to move on. Here's hoping the Mavs land a veteran who can get this team back where it belongs in the next couple years.

I hate to say this but the Little General can actually help out the Suns (R.I.P).

But I would rather Welcome the Little General back home where he belongs in the LOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEEEE STAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR STATE!!!

I think the biggest challenge to turn NY around is the challenge to the GM to get out of the payroll hole that Isiah left and still be able to acquire some talent. Then, a coach could do something with this team.

I give Walsh credit for making the obviously good decisions so far with the Nicks.

texasmade, I need your help. My fellow LAKER FANS residing in the S & Q state are quite bored right about now. We have no opponent yet and this waiting around has got them antsy. Any suggestions as to what they might involve themselves with until we play again?
