Chiefs to try out ex-Gator Leak
Posted: Friday May 02, 2008 08:11AM ET
One of the more interesting names heading to Kansas City for a tryout this weekend with the Chiefs will be former Florida quarterback Chris Leak. Leak, you'll recall, led Florida to the national title in 2007 by beating Ohio State. Leak was the title game's most valuable player. But Leak, who is 6 feet, 207 pounds, didn't get drafted. He signed as a rookie free agent last year with the Bears but was cut before the season.

This sucks for a player.
You play football all your life, lead a college team to a national title, and get voted MVP.
And now, he can't find a job backing up the likes of Rex Grossman. ****?

Report Offensive Commenttoo bad for him
but a hell of a fine title for the story

Report Offensive CommentHe was a good college quarterback, but that doesnt' mean he will be a good pro. He might not have the arm to play pro-football. I dont' think Charlie Ward had it either.

Report Offensive CommentHow do you get cut from the QB position in Chicago? Rex has been trying to get cut for three years and got a new contract. Good Luck Chris.

Report Offensive CommentHow many players have we seen dominate college sports but have busted in the pros? A lot. While Leak hasn't been given a chance to prove himself, the knock against him has always been his height. Flutie was only what, 5'11"? He did well, but not many others have.

Report Offensive Commenti would have kept him if you were the bears...i mean....i know he may be a lil short, really skinny and he's mostly a runner but hey..depth doesnt hurt..

Report Offensive CommentHe got lucky in Fl as the Gators did, but too short to see over these huge
linemen. Don't do it chiefs!

Report Offensive CommentThis does not help KC at all. Croyle may not be the answer at QB but bringing in a guy who didn't get drafted and the got cut as a FA by the Bears? Popular thought is that, "This is going to provide competition for the QB position." What this really says is, "Croyle. you are a bum. We are going to draft a high profile QB next year and this is a band aid for the 2008 season." Sorry Brodie, I hope you have a good real estate agent because selling a house is rough these days.

Report Offensive CommentChris Leak is a decent QB who should be on a roster. The problem at Florida is the system he ran. Ron Zook wasn't a great coach at Florida and Urban Meyer used a spread offense that Leak couldn't run as well. Leak was a great QB coming out of high school but I think he got setback at Florida. If he would have went to a more "pro-style" offense in college, I think he would have made it.

Report Offensive CommentTo bad team Florida didn't work out for him in the AAFL. lol

Report Offensive CommentHow bad of a QB do you have to be to get cut from the Bears!? Maybe he should go the Charlie Ward route and try the Knicks.

"Mostly a runner". *sigh* Words spoken by someone who clearly hadn't watched college football. Chris Leak is a pocket passer...which is why he didn't fit into Urban Meyer's spread offense. I don't know why height has to be such an issue. Steve Smith is 5'9" and is quite the playmaker. Flutie was what, 5'10"? The Bears didn't give him a fair shot at QB, because of his height.

Report Offensive CommentLeak should be playing in this league. He led the Gators to a National Championship and was MVP. What has Tebow done so far besides losing to Michigan.

You my friend must now have watched that Florida-Michigan game. The defense was horrible. Chad Henne had like over 300 yards and Mike Hart had over 120 I think..

Report Offensive CommentTebow will be a better QB when he makes it in the NFL. Leak, im sorry man Dah BEARS, Dah Bears, Dah Bears cut you.

Report Offensive CommentThe Bears cut him. Nuff said.

Report Offensive CommentNFL teams wont keep 4 qb's rarely
They had Grossman, Griese, and Orton who all had game starting experience.
Leak got cut because of numbers. he could very well not have been good in their system too, but you have to think he can at least make the KC roster since the only QB's they have inked right now are
Brodie Croyle
Damon Huard
Tyler Thigpen
David Greene
Ricky Santos

Report Offensive CommentIt's not like the Bears can evaluate QB talent. They've had at least 21 different QB's since Jim Harbaugh and for the past 15 years they have passed up on major QB talent in the draft and free agency. That said I believe that Chris leak has a chance to make the Chiefs roster. He is a decent QB and with guidence, he could one day challenge for a starting job on an NFL team.
Hawks4life | 05/02/08, 01:47 PM
Report Offensive CommentLeak needs alot of work if he wants to make an NFL team. Its possible but would require a team to really invest in him. You do not see too many patient teams anymore. The closest you come is Minnesotta and Tavaris Jackson. Actually Leak had good number when Zook coached the Gators but the coaching was not there.
