Rick Carlisle won't be reunited with former boss Donnie Walsh with the Knicks. Sources told The Post last night that the former Pacer and Piston coach, who interviewed with Walsh for the Knick coaching job Wednesday, has agreed to terms with the Mavericks to replace Avery Johnson.

That would be a good hire.

This guy is a good coach. Get out of his way and let him do his job.

I can't imagine Cuban getting out of Rick's way and letting him do his job.

G.O.A.T good assesment as usual. Not sure how much of an improvement he is. He is similar to Avery and tends to wear out his welcome pretty quickly.

I like the hire. Rick Carlisle is a pretty good coach. Look what he had to deal with in Indiana when Artest decided to riot in the crowd. He lost most of his starting lineup for a good portion of the season and he still made the playoffs as a 6 seed.

Coach first of all, the J-Ho bad apple is grown in mavs tree, u must fix it first, like you couldn't take care of Ron in East, I'm not bashisn' j-ho, but it is right to say after some developments in play off time, Avery has every rights to stop partying in play off nights, the result of ignoring coach was costly for all mavs. So discipline, one of the major philosophies every tried to put on in mavs should be implemented in higher standard in your tenure coach. Let Cuban's and Dirks' legitimate aspiration to bring championship to this great city of Dallas prevail. Welcome Coach Carilisle in "one of the greatest cities of the World, Dallas" (predeccessor' Avery Johnson's outogoing phrase).

Couldn't get a finer coach. EVEN BETTER THAN LARRY BROWN !!! LOL

Good hire. Now, if we could only get the right players and get rid of the bad ones... *cough cough*J-Ho, Stackhouse, Eddie Jones*cough cough*.

Who cares who the Mavericks coach is....

As soon as they get in the playoffs they wont be able to hit a jump shot

Every play will revolve around Dirk swining the ball around his head and trying to make a play from the 3 point line

Josh Howard is too stoned to finish lay ups and floaters

THEY WILL NEVER WIN WITH THIS TEAM

and thats coming from a big fan

There has to be some changes - they need a slasher who takes it to the rim more than anything else...and of course there is the C spot that is a killer...but this coaching change will help bring new life...much like the last one (i.e. Little General).

jump shooting teams eventually start missing and get bounced from the playoffs. well that and the softest 7 footer since Uwe Blab.

May 3, 2008  07:24 PM ET

vaughn9....Dirk is a baller... he was doing great against new orleans

Dirk, J-Kidd, Bass, and JT are the only ones that can do anything on that team.

Everyone else needs to go !!

I can agree that jump shooting teams eventually lose but that is the reason Avery did preach to go to the hole. Maybe High Howard didn't get the memo or his memory failed him along with another player or two.

This should be a good hire. Kidd can still be a good trade, although never a good LONG TERM trade to me if he is used properly. Dirk will be fine along with Kidd and of course Bass. Terry might be traded for younger blood even though I like him a lot. He pumps up the crowd and follows directions well. When his shot is on it is ON. When it is off he can still cut pretty good. Wish we had given up Howard instead fo Harris.... I actually like Damp although not for the money he makes.

The J-Kidd trade was the worst move made by a contending franchise in as long as I can remember.

It wasnt any worse than the Shaq trade to Suns. It did them a lot of good. The mavs do need to get some play makers in here. A new coach will be good but as long as they have the same supporting cast then its going to be hard to improve.

Good Luck with that payroll ($83 million next year and $70 million committed to 4 players).

the suns trade was bad
but maion wanted out
and kid w.e.
it was time to rebuild anyway

The Mavs are fortunate to have inked in Rick Carlisle before any other team got him.
They can definitely contend next year. It is too bad that Avery didn't get the chance to try a full year with Kidd.
Unfortunately, in the hyper-competitive West, the Mavs will be good enough to get to the playoffs, but not good enough to get past the 2nd round.
They did come very close in 2006, and for that alone, Avery should have been given extra slack.

Hey Rubik - while a record of 44-38 earned the Pacers a 6 seed in the "L"east in 2004-2005, the number 8 seeded team in the West (Memphis) had a record of 45-37. This means that Carlisle's Pacers would NOT have made it if they were in the West.

That being said - the Mavericks are good enough to make it to the playoffs no matter who their coach is. They'd probably make the playoffs even if Homie the Clown was the coach...

The real question is whether or not they can do something when they get to the playoffs. And based on their past record - no, they can not (they should've won the NBA championship 3 years ago but choked it up!)

Carlise's teams have done well in the regular season but he's never taken a team to the NBA finals - so there's no real reason to think that he'd be able to do so with the Mavericks either.

Marion was going to opt out anyways, so they figured they'd take a chance on O'neal and gave up something they wouldn't have had next year. On the Mavs trade, Devin Harris is an absolute stud, a better defensive player who could've kept up with Chris Paul. Giving up a possible 10+ years of Harris, and two first round draft picks, for a couple years of past his prime Jason Kidd is much worse than dumping Shawn Marion for Shaq.
