Why LSU dumped Perrilloux

LSU football coach Les Miles tossed troubled junior quarterback Ryan Perrilloux off the team Friday, a move that appeared to be brewing for months but nevertheless leaves the defending national champions without an experienced signal-caller. In recent days, Perrilloux also had failed a drug test, according to sources familiar with the situation. LSU officials, citing privacy concerns, declined to comment on drug testing, and sources close to the football program and within the athletic department were adamant throughout the day the expulsion was not the result of a specific recent event. Perrilloux's longtime attorney, Nathan Fisher, said he had not spoken with Perrilloux for months and had no knowledge of any tests.

I'm certainly no fan of Les Miles or LSU, but on this I have to applaud Miles. Not too many other coaches would have the guts (which usually get Miles in trouble) to do this. Nice job coach.

He has trashed a promising career. He obviously thought he was untouchable and Les proved him wrong. He received more than his fair share of chances. He will end up at McNeese State, Grambling , or Southern University next year in order to avoid having to sit out a season of his two years of remaining eligibility. There is no need to worry too much about this season. We went to the BCS NC with Matt Flynn, so we can definately contend with Lee or Hatch. Perrilloux's career went up in smoke!

May 3, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Miles should have canned this loser earlier.

May 3, 2008  10:04 AM ET

LSU has a 6 strikes and you are out rule. Ryan just whiffed his 6th time. What a bonehead. He just pissed his career away. His only hope now is with the Dallas Cowboys! :P

Btw, I wonder if he did some lines with Prez Bush when they were at the White House a month ago?

May 3, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Don't believe for a minute that this was all Miles' decision. He skirts the rules just like everyone else, but he was placed in a situation that he had to kick the kid off the team. If he goes to another school, they should beware...

May 3, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Miles made the right call and should have given Rayn all the chances he did; it's just sad for the kid.

May 3, 2008  12:08 PM ET

What's sad about this is that there was some other player who either got cut, or wasn't offered a scholarship so they could have a roster spot for this kid.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this kid has some sort of father issues. Either an absent father or one who refused to make him take responsibility for his actions.

There aren't any winners in this. I just hope Ryan pulls his head out, or we'll see him on the police blotter when and if he gets to the NFL.

E-Nasty,

I had read, though can't confirm, that Perriloux's father passed away a month or two ago.

Huh???? His downward spiral started the first time he opened his pie hole after arrving in Red Stick......

May 3, 2008  12:41 PM ET

It's not a father issue. He had problems coming into LSU and even last summer had disciplinary issues if you remember. I'm not happy for the kid's misfortune, but Miles was put in a situation where he HAD to kick him off the team. It's sad that it came to this point, but it was necessary.

Miami well take him.

The Warden:

That is true that his father passed away in Feb and he missed practice to go to the funeral. But, Perriloux's real problem is just now starting to become clear as it seems to be drup habbit . He was involved in a Counterfeit money ring and tried to get into a casino and both were most likely to get money to buy drugs.

Sir Robin:
As to your filthy description of Perriloux, and someone you know nothing about, the guy is not Stupid but was a victim like many young people of a Drug problem. If you heard him talk in interviews he is not stupid or dumb, but was a guy with problems like many others. His grades were not in question, only his class attendance was the problem and drugs can do that to people.

LSU will be much better off in the long or short run without him as he was a distraction and Miles made the exact proper decision. But, it is sad for LSU to have to lose a talented player like him, but the guy is going to continue to have problems no matter where he goes. But, let me tell you LSU is not now nor ever has been dependent on one guy to make the season. The Tigers will have Jared Lee or Andrew Hatch and a very experienced and talented team that will be around for a long time.

So to all of the LSU Detractors I say, " Don't expect the LSU Tigers to go away or be diminished from their winning ways ". Nobody knew about Matt Mauk or Matt Flynn and both gave LSU BCS National Championships. Gooo Tigers

May 3, 2008  01:40 PM ET

Nobody commenting here is qualified to say what the root of his problem is, but it is pretty safe to say we can all agree that he did not take advantage of the opportunities that were afforded to him. Free room, board, education, road to very lucrative career--even if he never made it 'big' in the pros, he would have gotten signed and gotten enough seed money to start a business, good life.

It's hard to understand the mentality of these kids that are given the world and think the world still owes them. it boggles the mind.

Serious talk aside, will gloat that glad that he renegged on his commitment to Texas--who needs that distraction?

Then again, maybe Mack might have faired better, or being away from the bad influences in his life in Louisiana might have done him well.

Athletes are a dime a dozen fellas, when you get your chances--don't throw them away--you ARE replaceable. Ask Maurice Clarett.

May 3, 2008  01:52 PM ET

in some cases, you can blame it all on drugs...im not so sure thats the case here. Its not as prevalent in this case as in the case of Avery Atkins or someone like that

May 3, 2008  01:53 PM ET

now AVERY was a kid with problems..i lived next to him in the dorm. Perriloux was just immature and made stupid decisions

May 3, 2008  01:59 PM ET

LSU is a better team without him, players like him divide the locker room a hurt the team chemistry at least we canned him before the seaso so Lee, Hatch, and Palemr can have time to battle it out to see who is gonna be the starting QB.

LSU has 4 great RB's , almost thier whole o-line back, and 3 stud WR who wil all make him look alot better

A "victim" of a drug problem. My SEC friends have assured me that they do not allow liberal w*e*enies at the Red Stick, so I'm sure this crap won't fly there. Is he also a victim of not being able to find his classes? Or a victim of having a large pie hole?.... like his pronouncement that he would win four Heismans?

May 3, 2008  02:42 PM ET

I won't say the kid a 'victim' of anything, but he does fit a pattern all too familiar.

His father who died in Feb. was his natural father, but apparently they were never close. He grew up with his mother and step-father.

The counterfeiting charges people like to bring up was an FBI investigation of his mother and step-father. His involvement, as far as we know, was simply being interviewed by the FBI. No charges, no further inquiries.

As for what he did at LSU, he was a college kid. When he was 20, he used a fake ID to get into a casino (10 years ago this would'nt have been illegal). He was with two teammates who got thrown-out of a bar. He went home, the teammated went back to fight the bouncers (both were thrown off the team). He missed class and meetings when his natural father died without telling his coaches that he wouldn't be there.

Up until this week, that was his rap sheet. I can't think of anyone I knew at LSU who would have lost their scholarship for those problems. I think that's why Miles kept giving him chances. None of those transgressions (though each made it on SI & ESPN) were worth axing the kid. I think whatever happened this week was huge or at least much worse than his other issues.

Anyway, good job Miles. This is a career defining moment for him. He just sacrificed a fourth straight 10+ win season to keep discipline on his team. Hopefully, that will make the parents of well-behaved athletes more likely to push kids towards his teams.
