If Avery Johnson listens to his longtime mentor, legendary black-college coach Ben Jobe, he will be beating down Donnie Walsh's door to coach the Knicks. If Walsh listens to his longtime friend and confidant, Ben Jobe, Walsh will be beating down Johnson's door. Jobe, Avery's college coach at Southern University and the main character in Dan Klores' "Black Magic" documentary, told The Post he had been in Walsh's ear Thursday and Friday, singing Avery's praises.

Avery, if Ben Jobe is telling you to beat down the Knicks' door to coach that team, then he's not your friend.

If Avery is Smart, He won't answer the phone. Stay as far away as possible.

Avey has two defaults: he is too nervous, always gesticulating on the bench and he thinks he is the PG on the floor. Give some freedom to your PG and he'll do better.

Oh for heaven sake, put your arms down.

this would be a huge mistake.....

May 4, 2008  05:07 PM ET

God who writes this **** lol

May 4, 2008  05:29 PM ET

if he couldn't get the Mavs- who have FAR greater talent than NY- to get past the 1st round.....how will he ever do that in NY?

That being said- I'd rather have him than Jax-

May 4, 2008  06:00 PM ET

knick should've kept larry brown and got rid of Zeke and about 113 million in bad contracts

May 4, 2008  07:39 PM ET

Too late for should of, would of and could of's - If Walsh and Avery can work out a deal, bring him to NY so he can get this team back into shape! And on the playoff note, I have a feeling that it will LA against the Celtics this year. I think the Celtics will beat Detroit, force a Game 7 but make to it the conference finals and go agasint LA - this may be the Celtics year. KG deserves a ring this year. Kobe has been there and so has the Pistons, it's time for the Celtics!

Kicks need a Kick-ass coach. They have talent that is mesmerized with itself. They have players that are incompatible.

I think of that Belinda Carlyle song "Mad about you... in the video she spins around hugging herself.

That's the Knicks.

Zak R- LET HIM GO and put the Knicks out of their misery.

GET GUYS in shape/
tell them they are paid at BOTH ends of the floor.

Put a moat around the floor only drop a plank to let them cross if they hustle.

put ALLIGATORS in the moat

DO SOMETHING

Its a storied franchise gone to tales from the crypt.

IS AVERY up to this SH_ _??

I doubt it.

Patrick?
not enough caching experience

how about GODZILLA!!!

Wow. For Avery to have his college coach stepping up to recommend him after all these years is quite a compliment. Avery must have made quite a good impression back then, even as a kid growing up.
As for joining the Knicks, Avery would definitely help them. After all, he has experience, has gone to the NBA Finals both as a player and as the Mavs coach, and knows how to be a leader.
In other words, what is there to lose by giving him a shot?
On the other hand, there are some of you who advise Avery NOT to go after the Knicks job.
I, personally, don't mind if he does NOT pursue the job. I'm happy to see the Knicks as the stomping mat of the league for a couple more years.

WHY THE KNICKS DON'T WANT TO HIRE PATRICK EWING.

I finally figured it out. For a long time, I could not understand why the Knicks would not hire the man who was the face of the franchise in the 90's, and who has done some stints as an assistant with other teams.
Now, I understand!
You see, the Knicks realize that it would be EMBARASSING when the best player on the floor is their head coach!
That would be the case if Ewing were to take the reigns right now. He would actually be better than all the players on the current roster!
In order to avoid that embarassment, they are waiting to revamp their roster, get some good players, and then hire Ewing without guilt.

majority of you clowns in hear are idiots. Avery Johnson can do better than Isaiah did. If we can get rid of the players who has the ego problems, get a solid pick this year and some pure shooters, he can do wonders. And if Marbury stops acting like a **** and play point we can go places, or they can trade his ass. The Knicks messed up big when they traded Hardaway because he was in his final year. They went and got Francis and that freed up the Magic to get Lewis, we gotta stop dumb trades like that as well.

maybe you should be GM & coach dumming39 (yes I mis-spelled your name on purpose)

If Avery went to the KNicks i think he could do some good but damn do they need a lot of help. it might take a couple of seasons or if people are not willing to wait then he might not be there long if he goes. They need to revamp entirly. they need to keep zach and a few others and get out there and sign people and in the draft boy do they need to get some help damn. Good luck knicks and avery johnson( even though he did lose to the Hornets) hell yes

Raise your hands if you're sure

May 5, 2008  01:07 PM ET

dear dcummings39
that is the point...

it''s Not if if if...

It's WHO can make them do that?
who WILL they follow?

who will bend them to his will?

That is the coach you want.

it is not who has a good scheme???

If they won;t run it, the scheme is not good.

The knicks need a disciplinarian but one that won't alienate the tender egos and turn them to mush and sulking.

lacking that you scrap as many contracts as you can can embark on a LONGGGGGG rebuilding project

Its a tough slot to fill...

a storied franchise gone bad.
