Yanks GM in Phillies future?

Yankees GM Brian Cashman is in the final year of his contract and missing the playoffs could surely result in a change of GMs. That would make Cashman a free agent. And that would put him in play in Philadelphia, where there will be a job opening when Pat Gillick retires in the fall. Cashman was between contracts when Gillick got the job in the fall of 2005. The Yankees GM was thinking about where he might end up if he was not renewed, and the Phillies job appealed to him. He admitted it.

He could very well be on the outs with the younger Steinbrenners, and Philly would be a logical fit. Cashman seems to do his job well, but it would be interesting to see how he'd do in a city with a much more limited cash flow.

Do yourself a favor and get out of NY and away from the Steinbrenners. Let him be the GM & manager.

May 4, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I have no problem with the Yankees as a team, It's the Steinbrenners I can't stand.

May 4, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I'v been a Yankee fan since the 70's and the Steinbrenners can all drop dead. I don't care how many titles they've won. The last championship team was put together when George was suspened. He probably would have gotten rid of Bernie, Jeter, Posada and Petitte the way he did Jay Buhner, Fred McGriff, Jose Rio and Doug Drabek.

I appreciate the Steinbrenners immensely. They allow the feud to take on new and unexplored dimensions. They are one big collection of annoying tools, but good for us Sox fans.

I'm glad you said Red Sox fans. As you know Red Sox nation is a figment of your imagination. As are all the Red Sox fans I see when I go to Yankee Stadium and Camden Yards. The 6 of you really do get around-

The only reason the Red Sox stepped up and became competitive was because of the Yankees. Otherwise they couldn't care less.

May 4, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Well the way he's been screwing up lately he better hope he has a future somewhere !!!

May 4, 2008  12:10 PM ET

it's probably time for him to move on -- he's gambled on too many players and lost -- it's not like there aren't other people capable of spending the Steinbrenners' money -- and next year a number of Cashman's expensive but unproductive 'investments' will be off the books -- he should move to the National League where the living is easy and nobody really cares

Honest Abe is right on this one. The golden GM will learn what its like to be a real GM if he goes to Philly. Won't be able to buy his way out of a 44 million dollar mistake like Pavano. Or an Igawa mistake.

What'r you 5 Buford? At least try.

May 4, 2008  01:51 PM ET

Philly wouldn't be too great of a fit for this guy. He'll have no where near the kind of money to spend that he did in NY. Maybe the Mets, or Angels.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was Cashman who wanted to keep Hughes and Kennedy and the Steinbrenners wanted Santana, right?

If I have that right, then I imagine Cashman's fate is directly tied to Hughes and Kennedy's performance this year. So far, not so good.

Rightly or wrongly, I think if Kennedy and Hughes continue to struggle, Cashman will be out.

You can't blame Cashman for wanting to get back to what won them four championships since '96, which is stay with your farm system. Everyone can see (because EVERYONE complained like babies about it) that the Yanks tried to buy a championship after the 4 WS wins, but now Cashman's being put on the hot seat for trying to keep their young talent.

This topic wouldn't even be on here if Hughes and Kennedy started 4-0, but since it is and its the Yanks, people got their forks, knives, and bibs ready. I don't care what anyone says, Cashman is a great GM and the Yanks, or should I say the Steinbrenners, would make another stupid move by letting him go. Just let the man do his job and stop getting involved by telling him to go out there and trade away our young talent and maybe, if they'll let him do that, they might win another championship in the near future.

May 4, 2008  04:52 PM ET

I will drive him to Philly if he wants to go. Let him go make mistakes like Pavano, Igawa, Vazquez, Jeff Weaver, etc on someone else's dime. He's trying to prove he can win without signing big money free agents, using the farm system. Well, when you draft guys like CJ Henry in the same draft that the Red Sox take Bucholz, Ellsbury and Lowrie, this is what happens. As a matter of fact, please let him take Damon Oppenheimer with him! And yes, the mid-90's teams were built through the system (Pettite, Jeter, Rivera, Posada) and smart trades or signings (Cone, Key, O'Neill, Martinez) but Cashman had nothing to do with any of that. Those players were obtained on Stick Michael's watch...and if you read earlier this week, Hank said he was consulting with Stick on possible moves to make Yanks better- so maybe young Hank was paying a bit of attention to who the architect of that dynasty was. And let's face it, Cashman got his job b/c he was someone's roomate or something in college, then an intern, etc. Stick is a baseball man.

May 4, 2008  05:34 PM ET

Cash did the right thing by holding on to Hughes and Kennedy. They are struggling now, but have their whole careers ahead of them. The Yanks have to rebuild through the draft, and go get the right players through free agency to compliment their homegrown talent.

Stick with the kids and let them develop.. you can't win every year, and the Yanks have gotten sidetracked recently and signed players they didn't need (Giambi, Clemens, Farnsworth, Damon). Now is the time to get back to building the right way.

May 4, 2008  06:57 PM ET

Yanks payroll very high, and part of the trade for the two young pitchers, was a larger payroll, not that they can't afford it, but last year, and the year before that, they spent multi millions of dollars, because of lux tax and revenue sharing, and therefore were in the red with losses for both years. So I believe part of the decision was to wait, after they get rid of the dead wood in their last year of their contracts. Giambi et al...but I agree, they didn't count on the injuries they have to deal with now. It may be to little to late, but look for kennedy to be traded. comments made by him when he was sent down, were positive, but also, some were not, like "now I don't have to worry about every pitch." Not what those ego maniacs in the front office want to hear.

Yes cash may be in his last year, but that depends, who is out there to replace him? Gene Michaels???

May 4, 2008  07:23 PM ET

Hank should become the new Yankees GM since he thinks he know so much about baseball, LMAO!

May 4, 2008  07:41 PM ET

NYFan , you are clueless about the Yankee minor league system. Damon Oppenheimer and his drafting is the main reason the Yankees system has rebounded to become one of the best. You want to get rid of him? Idiot. You want to kill him for CJ Henry? Have you heard of some people called Joba Chamberlian, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, David Robertson, Brett Gardner, Kyle Anson, Austin Jackson, Bradley Suttle, Zachary McAllister, and Dellin Betances? These are just some of the guys Oppenheimer drafted the past few years.

And they turned CJ Henry into Bobby Abreu. Please don't post anymore.
