Rutgers' quarterback of future

Posted: Sunday May 04, 2008 10:16AM ET

It wasn't difficult to pick out Tom Savage from the other top quarterbacks on the field at Rutgers Stadium yesterday. You just had to look for the guy throwing the tightest spirals. Rutgers hopes that becomes a familiar sight in years to come, Savage, who will be a senior at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa., in the fall, already has verbally committed to the Scarlet Knights and was on his future campus yesterday at Football University, a training camp for elite high school players.

Sorry to ruin your excitement RU fans, but the kid gave a verbal commitment and that's it. High school kids have been giving out these "verbals" to college coaches like candy in recent years only to take them back months later. Let's chill out and wait and see how the kid reacts in December, if/when RU finishes behind WVU, UConn, Pitt, and Cinncy in the Big East and Schiano is off to Penn State.

We Shall see about all that, let's wait until the season.....Schiano is not headed anywhere...He's a Jersey guy, which unless you are from there you would not understand. So his loyalty goes beyond that of just Rutgers, and his name isn't Rich Rod...

Tom Savage will be a good player

State_of_Rutgers: I'm a New Jersey native still living in NJ, who grew up going to Rutgers games during the some of the worst Shea-era seasons with my parents, long time dedicated RU fans. I am not a Rutgers fan, but I do respect them and am glad when they do well. Some of these bandwagon jumping Rutgers fans (who were Notre Dame die-hards just five years ago) are clueless to Rutgers and college football. Whether you're a Rutgers fan or LSU fan, or any other fan there are things you cannot deny as a Div.I college fan: 1. Verbal commitments mean NOTHING; 2. Every season could be the last on campus for your head coach.
As a USC fan, I live by this credo, as an RU fan so should you. Best of luck to the Scarlet Knights.

EastCoastKeith: Strong words from a NJ native who's a bandwagon USC fan. What other credo do you live by? When the tides turn for USC, you'll find another team?

Trust no one, that's my credo!

This kid, like so many others, could very well end up playing somewhere else. If you want em, get em in the 8th grade, then you own them!

well as long as you like to see Rutgers do well, thats what is important...but defiently things are headed in the right direction for RU seeing as we are on here talking about them...maybe in a few more years we can stop usc from taking the Jersey studs lol...I just cant wait till the season already, it's such a long off season. what's the word on fresno st. Im seeing they are preseason top 25 in some polls? As far as the verbal commitments goes, there should be some penalty for reneging on it. It's just not fair to the teams.....

The sky is the limit. Sure RU may/could lose this guys, but what about the other top-flight recruits they got last year? The talent influx shows that, maybe not next year or even the next two years, but soon RU will be in a BCS bowl and will be competitive. And guess what, by then RU will have been in the limelight for ten years, people won't be talking about RU like its still temple then.

Those who reject the idea that RU can do this, are fans of the same 'ol 15-20 old guard schools who get all the attention, and they don't want to let anyone else in the party. Look at VT. They used the be the homecoming game that teams in the east scheduled...now look at them...it only took them 8-10 years or so and Michael Vick to put them on the map for good. Why can't RU be the new VT?

The problem is if your less that 25 y.o. you probably don't remember that, and since 14-25y.os do most of the blogging on the web, the "apparent" concensus is that VT was always good, and the RU was/will always be bad. Take a look on ScarletKnights.com and look at their record form 1993 and further back..yeah RU was bad, really bad in the late 90 and into the millenium, but they havn't alway been like this, even in most fan's life-times. Granted they were like a division II school in the 70s and played the Ivy's a lot, but they were a winning program.

I'm sure someone is going to reply to this with some bone head remark, but that would only validate my point.

BTW, I went to Syracuse, and if there is any group of fans who have reason to hate RU, we're it, but even I (and it hurts to say this) can be objective enough to see what is happening.

How would you even know if I was on a bandwagon or not. Anyone who stuck with USC during the Hackett years (which I surely did) is not on a bandwagon. Stop displaying how stupid New Jersey people are here on fannation.

I guess no one has heard of another RU signee. A kid named DC who was named Mr Football in Florida this past season. About 6'5", 230, rocket arm, and very quick. Starred at Winter Haven High School.

EastCoastKeith - if you went through the Hackett years, you deserve major kudos. I grew up USC fan since about age 5, my family lived within walking distance from the campus. But I was whisked away to High School in TN (which is why I like the Vols), but returned to LA to attend college at my beloved USC. And it was hard me to stay a USC fan during Hackett's tenure. I attended the USC @ FSU game and Hackett waited until we were getting by a couple of scores early fourth quarter to put in the Fr QB, Carlson Palmer. Hackeet almost destroyed one of the best QB's in the game over the course of his tenure at USC. Hackett SUCKS

If he makes it to campus, he and a couple of young QB's on the roster are going to have a tough competition.

No matter what, Rutgers better have a plan in place when Schiano leaves for a bigger job.

Hackett Ugh Jets fan here. Still a bad taste in my mouth from his tenure as O coordinator...Defiantly Looking forward To DC Jefferson on the RU squad...

So from coast to coast, we can all agree Hackett is not exactly a beloved figure in football?
