Dolphins search for slot receiver

Posted: Monday May 05, 2008 07:15AM ET

The Dolphins have a serious and chronic problem at the wide-receiver spot. The Dolphins hope one of the undrafted rookies can step forward as a slot receiver, a part-time role that can take advantage of the focus defenses will put on Ted Ginn and Ernest Wilford. It is a search that could extend beyond training camp and beyond Miami's roster when other teams cut some of their receivers. The Dolphins could be looking at those discards as ways to upgrade their receiving corps. That is how dire the problem appears right now.

It's Not!

Was this picture taken on casual Friday? Tony looks like he's wearing a caftan. Never thought Parcells would go for the laid-back guru look. Maybe he's changed.

Funny, there is a damn good slot receiver in their division who would look good in Miami colors. Maybe they could trade for him?

Report Offensive Comment

Lets see they had Chambers traded him for a 4th.
They drafted Ginn last year and Hagan the year before....And didn't draft a WR this year.

Report Offensive Comment

Ahhh yes the stealing of Wes Welker for hardly anything. I'm goingto miss the old regime in Miami. The Tuna would not have made a deal like that, EVER! Maybe we could send them Troy Brown....Parcells only cut him several times.

just dont know what to say a fins story without a tuna picture.

As inept as Cameron was as a head coach they did draft the starting center with the 2nd round pick they received from the Welker trade. Miami could have matched the contract that NE signed him to since he was a restricted free agent but with as many holes as the team has it's hard to justify that amount of money for a slot wide receiver position. Plus the Dolphins received an extra 4th round pick from the trade instead of just letting NE sign him to a free agent contract. And Davone Bess the undrafted free agent WR from Hawaii is looking like a great pick-up early on...though since the calendar is still in May it's WAY too early to tell.

I think they only got a 2nd and a 7th for Welker, not an additional 4th. However, Welker's stats wouldn't have been half as good with Miami. I would have loved watching Welker catch passes, but Satele will be better for them in the long run.

I thought the Dolphins had more problems than just at the WR slot...

They has Wes Welker

LOL

With all the receivers drafted, thee will be plenty to go around...

You guys are so wrong. First, They got a 2nd for chambers. 2nd, Welker is only as good as the QB throwing to him. He was not that valuable in Miami. 352, 760, 141. What is that? Reche Caldwell's stats, that's the brady effect in the middle right there.

Also, Miami didn't just trade Welker. NE offered Welker a contract with a poison pill, which Welker SIGNED. There was no way in hell Miami would have matched it with the poison pill. Rather than let it play through to see if the poison pill was legit or not, the two teams decided to just go ahead and do a trade, that's why the 7th was thrown in.

Don't listen to the media who know nothing, in no way was Welker going to be anything but a Patriot last year. Plus, slot receivers are a dime a dozen and not that important. Case in point, Welker had the game of his life in the superbowl. End result? 14 points. Biggest choke job ever.

Davone Bess or Jayson Foster will be playing the slot next year, probably Bess.

Bess is a great receiver. I watched several Hawai'i games in the last two years. He will make a good slot reciever.

Is Miami going to input more short out routes to thier playbook? They better, or why look for a slot receiver?

Report Offensive Comment

Davone Bess looked very good in mini-camp this past weekend, and he should make the team because the only receivers who are locked in right now are Ted Ginn, Derek Hagan, and Ernest Wilford.

As for Welker, yes he was made better by Tom Brady, but he also made Tom Brady, AND Randy Moss a lot better. Teams realized that they had to account for the little guy coming across the middle as well as Moss, and it became a guessing game. Don't forget that Welker was Miami's leading receiver in 2006 with Culpepper/Harrington at QB. The Dolphins should have done a lot more to try and keep him.

Trading Chambers was a pretty good value trade. Chambers would have never gotten a 2nd round pick in the off-season and the Dolphins were obviously in rebuilding mode. We drafted Chad Henne with the pick we got from San Diego.

I agree with jdang307, receivers are a dime a dozen, and that is probably why the Phins didn't address the position on draft day, especially figuring they could sign Bess once the draft ended. This team needs help everywhere, so Parcells and co. used the draft to build both lines (6 of 9 picks were linemen).

Thank God for a coaching staff and front office that finally understands that that is where it all starts!

He looks like Obama's pastor.

Boy, Billy O'Tuna would love to have Welker. Billy McBelichick is gonna miss having inept management in Miami. O well, he always can think of the Jets and smile. There's one less divisional opponent to worry about as long as Mangini/Tannetbum are in charge.

They have a slot receiver, hes great and plays in New England - bunch of morons!

Report Offensive Comment

The biggest thing with Welker wasn't the QB, it was the surrounding receivers. He's a good player but if you took Moss away you'd sell Welker's number's bottom out because he'd always be covered.

Brady has nothing to do with it.

LOL I wonder if he thinks the US Government invented AIDS to destroy the black population too.

What the hell is that man in the picture wearing? Does he change oil at the Quik Lube? You'd think the Dolphins could afford something better.
