Brendan Shanahan offered no immediate clues as to his plans. In fact, in keeping with his playoffs-long policy, Shanahan refused to discuss whether he even plans to play hockey next season or retire after an illustrious 20-year career. "No decisions now," Shanahan said.

He looked slow...real slow. And I saw lots of chances for him to one-time the puck into open nets, and he didn't convert one. That play was his bread and butter in Detroit. If he's not putting them in, then he's pretty much done, if you ask me. His leadership can't be questioned, but the body just might not have in anymore.

very true. Everyone's career comes to an end and Shanny should hang them up before he becomes a bench rider.

As much as im a giant fan goC is right. The Rangers and Shanny sure didnt have the juice of the 'Guins at the end of that game.

May 5, 2008  09:41 AM ET

He's had a great career and there is nothing else for him to win. Well...there is a small matter of millions per year. He defensive game is still excellent. He might just take a few more million and play out the string. Obviously his A game has moved down the alphabet somewhat.

Rest up Shanny, and take some time off. It'd be awesome for him to get a cushy Teemu-like deal as he is brilliant on the penalty kill and still has one of the sickest wristers in the league.

He can't play a full season and go deep into the playoffs anymore. There were games in the 2nd round he barely skated in. And he was almost always the last player to get into the offensive zone on the rush.

Great player and a great guy, hope he gets something of a shortened season deal, it still looks like he wants to play.

There comes a time in every athlete's life when it is time to hang it up...it is that time for Shanny unfortunately!

May 5, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Maybe he can ask Craig Janney's wife about what he should do... i mean, maybe he should as his wife what he should do.

May 5, 2008  11:03 AM ET

I'm pretty sure Shanny's future is this....Sitting in a rocker on a porch somewhere dribbling oatmeal down his chin...thats his future...

May 5, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I thought Shanahan looked a little tired for this whole series
Steerdude,
You mean his future is to be with the Lindros Brothers?

May 5, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Exactly!

May 5, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Shanahan can play for years. He does not skate aroudn uselessly too much; just gets in position, makes room for himslef and shoots. And more often than not, scores. A very economical way to play hockey... Smart!
He'll be back.

May 5, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Hmmm...Shanahan makes some folks automatically think of the Bruins...I tried it...funny how I just can't get there.

You know...this quote works well almost everywhere....LOL

Shanahan has all the tools. He's just never able to get it together when it counts. He lacks that extra gear to be a winner. I lost all respect for him when he walked away from his contract in Hartford.

May 5, 2008  03:07 PM ET

lacks the extra gear to be a winner? Three Stanley Cups, an Olympic Gold Medal and a World Cup of Hockey Championship to his resume and he lacks what it takes to be a winner?

May 5, 2008  03:08 PM ET

and he got traded from Hartford - to Detroit - there was no walking away that happened. He was captain of that team at the time too, if I remember right

May 5, 2008  03:13 PM ET

Shanahan should sign with detroit, but then retire a couple days later. So he can retire where he spent the best seasons of his career

May 5, 2008  05:16 PM ET

yea DCruiser u dont really know wat your talking about...shanny on the other hand has been great for the rangers in leadership and everything but its pretty evident that he has lost a few steps and cant join the rush like he used to. joining the rangers mid-year seems like the only logical deal for the rangers after seeing wat he had left in the playoffs this year.

May 5, 2008  06:53 PM ET

He was a class act his entire career and I wish him well. Next stop the HOF.

May 5, 2008  08:50 PM ET

Shame on DCruiser...

Shanny was as classy as they come. A great player. I get a little teary eyed myself as these guys I grew up watching continue to hang them up... guys like Gretzky, Lemieux, Bourque, Messier, Coffey, Yzerman, Hull, Francis, now Shanny and maybe Sakic and Forsberg... it was a great era to be sure.
