Leafs captain getting married

Mats Sundin picks up his chopsticks and flashes a thick gold band on his left ring finger. "You're married ?" an astonished luncheon companion blurts out. No, no, assures the Maple Leaf captain -- assuming he is still a Maple Leaf and still the captain, which may be merely a technicality at this point, everything in off-season, unsigned flux. "I'm engaged. This is Swedish custom, to wear an engagement ring on the left hand." Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. Sundin says he proposed to his Swedish girlfriend of a year or so, Josie Johansson, during the all-star break in February, whilst on mini vacation in St. Thomas. Claims he's been wearing the ring ever since but nobody noticed. And that, too, is difficult to believe.

Is this a Toronto Star story or the National Enquirer? Shouldn't a "legitimate" paper have better things to report on than garbage gossip about a person's private life? I'm glad I don't read that paper anymore, because the more I see it now, the more I realize that it is just Canada's lower budget People Magazine

Boy, this guy is becoming more and more of a B.S.eras he gets older. Like no-one would notice a ring on his finger for a year. In Toronto? Please. People would notice if he had a hair out of place (if he had any hair). It sounds like Sundin is preparing himself for a front office job at MLSE, where we all know the motto: "Bu//$h!t Baffles Brains."

Mats Sundin picks up his chopsticks and flashes a thick gold band on his left ring finger.
"You're married?" an astonished luncheon companion blurts out. No, no, assures the Maple Leaf captain "You see, I had to wear this ring to keep people believing I had a reason to stay in Toronto"
"Oh, well couldn't you just say you like it here? Or that you don't really mind not winning a cup, or that T.O has the best strip joints?" His astonished companion asks.
"Well yes, I suppose I could, but they wouldn't believe that. I'm thinking of something more believable, like, I want to stay here to help the Leafs win a Cup...yeah that'll work" A wide grin slowly creeps over Mats' face.
"But what about this broad your seeing, Josie or something?" His friend continues.
"Nah, that's just Jiri Tlusty in disguise"

Imagine Domi getting all snapped up at the reception and taking turns with the wives.

"You're married...What's his name?" The astonished luncheon companion blurts out!

Maybe newpaper articles are just too long for you...

"But its good to see that you're at least getting your bite of daily literacy nutrition from fannation's truth & rumors!" The astonished luncheon companion blurts out.

Wow there is a Sundin story for everyday of the week...Matt takes batting practice with the Blue Jays and now he is getting married. Give me a break! Lets not talk about Sundin unless it involves contracts and franchises! The guy should already be married, he is almost forty!

May 5, 2008  10:55 AM ET

It is a Swedish custom. True story... I'm a Swede myself so I would know.

May 5, 2008  12:07 PM ET

No wonder he refused and refused to get traded anywhere. He had secret wedding chapels plans as well as playing for the Blue Jays.
I see how things go in Toronto, when the 29 other teams are actually focused on winning the Cup...

May 5, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Ummm. Is this going to make him younger?

May 5, 2008  03:05 PM ET

What I heard was that he promised her his heart, but she had to think about it for a while because she's seen him play hockey and wasn't so sure he was promising her all that much!

May 5, 2008  03:46 PM ET

Actually Gocan...I heard that she was only prepared to offer him a one year contract...with a no-trade clause.

May 5, 2008  03:54 PM ET

at least she knows he won't waive the clause for another, better looking woman!

May 5, 2008  05:31 PM ET

Yeah...that's true...but now she is trying to get a few more million and upgrade to a No movement clause. haha

May 5, 2008  06:53 PM ET

You know, I just made a little side bet of sorts with bgm on the Wings series, which reminded me of a bet I made with a certain Leaf fan about the Coyotes not making the playoffs...and I am yet to taste my victory beers, Peter!!!

I don't know how to "add friends" on this puppy, Pete (I'm not smart enough on computers to figure it out) so if you do, add me, and I'll pass that address on to you first thing!
