Hoosiers land big commitment

Maurice Creek has never stepped foot on the Indiana University campus. He has never been in Indiana. But because of his desire to play basketball for IU basketball coach Tom Crean, the 6-5 shooting guard from South Kent, Conn., gave IU a commitment Sunday, making him the third member of IU's Class of 2009. Creek, a four-star prospect by rivals.com and the No. 63-ranked player in the nation, chose Indiana over Maryland, Miami, Pittsburgh, Texas and Marquette.

Now, that's the type of coach you want when kids want to play for the guy before ever seeing the campus. Now, let's hope he actually likes the school when he sees it.

IU has great academic programs and one of the best most scenic campus in the the country and the fans are great.

Tom Crean is a hell of a coach, and he will turn around the program in two years. I honestly think that he can take it back to Bob Knight Level!

I can understand why somebody would want to play at IU, without having seen it first. It's a great school with great fans and great tradition. However, Crean is vastly overrated.

Really hope IU can turn it around....but it's their own damn fault that they're struggling for hiring Sampson in the first place. They knew what they were getting into.

Anyway....odd to me that a kid would commit without even seeing the place

May 5, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Personally I think it is refreshing to see a kid make a commitment without have to be sold. It means he is were he wants to be and will be a hard worker. If he went to campus he would be sold by the aura of it all and maybe down the road realize it's where he wants to be.

I went to IU and the campus is great and the partying just as much fun, but the aura of that court is something special indeed. However, I am a UK fan 1st and foremost! IU & UL are just my nearby siblings like I love to see succeed.

May 5, 2008  01:09 PM ET

TYPO Update: That would be, he might realize after being sold once on campus tour he might realize that's NOT where he wants be after all. This way it is fully his decision.

May 5, 2008  07:21 PM ET

Not too strong a list of possible schools was it?

May 5, 2008  07:39 PM ET

I would say it was a VERY impressive of schools to choose from

IU, Pitt, Marquette and Texas...not too shabby

I am a Buckeye fan through and through. Calvin Sampson pulling his stunt(again) was the best thing to happen to Indiana. Indiana got a fantastic coach that will give the Big ten more credibility and Indiana will again be among the elite. The Big ten will be nasty in a couple of years. Matta, Painter, Tubby, Crean etc. I like where we are headed.

May 5, 2008  10:08 PM ET

Don't forget about Izzo and Bo Ryan out of Wisconsin

May 5, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Breaking News: IU just signed Verdell Jones out of Champaign, IL.

May 6, 2008  01:02 AM ET

It'll be rough for a little bit, but Hoosier Nation will make it through behind Crean! :D

May 6, 2008  01:22 AM ET

No disrespect but the campus in Champaign-Urbana is a lot more attractive and the academics overall at U. of Illinois are far superior to Indiana's, facts are. As for all the fine coaches listed inthe Big Ten it's telling that Bruce Webber rates an "etc." or no mention at all which suggests a lack of information by those making the post or just plain stupidity. Indiana will totally suck for two years in the Big Ten. You read it here.

May 6, 2008  09:30 AM ET

I was wondering how long this post would go before someone from Illinois came on here whining about something.

May 6, 2008  09:31 AM ET

I was wondering what this thread was missing. Then I realized it was someone from Illinois whining about IU. Now it seems normal.

Tom Crean is a good coach but this kid wanted to play for him anyway, so how is this a big commitment?
