Rookie Henne hits mental wall

Dolphins rookie quarterback Chad Henne seemed to be working on mental overload as he wrapped up the final practice of the three-day rookie minicamp Sunday. At one point, he was told to run a lap after blowing an assignment. "I forgot the snap count," said Henne, the 57th overall draft pick. "I went on one instead of our second count. I deserved it." Henne said the last time he had received a similar punishment was back in high school for cursing. After three solid practices, the former Michigan quarterback was overthrowing most of his receivers. It was partly due to having to learn 150 pages of the playbook in four days and then trying to assimilate it on the field with rookie receivers he has never thrown to before.

Dealing with the Tuna is enough pressure...

May 5, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Or maybe he is just over-rated and will be another QB bust.

May 5, 2008  12:34 PM ET

Other than Brady and Harbaugh, name another Michigan QB that has worked out? Chances are pretty good that Henne is going to be a bust.

May 5, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Elvis Grbac baby! Oh, wait did I just make your point?

May 5, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Drew Henson, duh. He was the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys...oh, wait...that was just one game...um, wait...that was just one half...nevermind.

May 5, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Look at the statistics...about 8 out of 10 quarterbacks drafted in the NFL will be labeled a bust. How about giving the guy a few years to see how he turns out. And based on your thinking...Eastern Illinois must be must be like a minor league system for NFL QB's since 100% of the QB's they've sent to the NFL are Pro Bowlers (Tony Romo). And since Peyton Manning went to Tennessee that must mean 100% for them as well...oh wait...maybe not (Heath Shuler, Tee Martin, Casey Clausen, etc).

The playbook has everything to do with overthrowing recievers! When his completion percentage dips below 50% he can just blame it on the playbook...

May 5, 2008  02:17 PM ET

I'm sure it's quite a daunting experience especially if the guy is trying really hard to catch the eye of the almighty Tuna. Lots to learn and he needs to learn to take it in stride.

May 5, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Chad Henne ain't no Einstein (22 Wonderlic, as opposed to Brohm and Ryan at 32) - among the lowest of the Qb scores. (Mario Manningham got a 6! What the hell is going on in Ann Arbor, Truth?) Probably he got rattled because he can't memorize and overthrew as a result of his getting rattled. Seems to me Parcells likes 'em a little bit smarter (Romo, 37; Bledsoe, 36). Could be a disaster folks.

May 5, 2008  02:39 PM ET

"The playbook has everything to do with overthrowing recievers! "

Is it possible that the rookie receivers he was throwing to might have been partially responsible as well? Poor route running or simply fatigue on the part of the WR's could have contributed to the balls being overthrown. Plus if a quarterback is thinking too much they also tend to be off a bit mechanically...because they're thinking about what play was called, the snapcount, the route the receivers are running, the defense, etc...instead of just dropping back and throwing the ball. Much like a pitcher...if a QB isn't sound mechaniclly their delivery is going to be all over the place. How about giving the guy some time to learn the offense and get used to the speed of the NFL before passing judgment.

May 5, 2008  02:49 PM ET

people....the guy practiced for 3 days...lets not declare him a bust or a future HOFer just yet.....the guy will be fine...u cant go back and say he will be good or not just because of where he went to college

May 5, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Tony Romo scored a 30 while Bledsoe scored a 37...get your numbers right. (Source: www.macmirabile.com/Wonderlic/Wonderlic.htm) Know what Marino scored?? A 14...seems like he turned out alright as a QB. Now guess what Alex Smith QB for the 49rs scored. That would be a 40...he must be a Hall of Famer with that score!! By the way...another QB who scored a 22 on the Wonderlic is named Favre.

May 5, 2008  02:54 PM ET

The playbook has a LOT to do with overthrowing receivers. Scripted plays has a QB throwing to where a receiver is GOING to be, not where he is. If the QB doesn't know the playbook, it's pretty likely that he will overthrow the receiver. Let's give the kid a chance to learn. As I recall, even Peyton Manning didn't have a good rookie season.

What's the big deal. Last time I checked, football was played with 7 on 7 drills.

May 5, 2008  04:04 PM ET

its pretty clear from this evaluation that Chad Henne is just not smart enough to be an NFL quarterback. If you can't learn an entire NFL playbook in three days on your first shot you might as well hang up the cleats right now. How dare he have a bad minicamp...

May 5, 2008  04:19 PM ET

I wouldnt crack any U of Michigan jokes about QB's, I dont see any Ohio State QB's gettin drafted or if drafted doing anything in the pro's.

Beg your pardon, alloneword. (The following address had the Romo score of 37: http://www.unc.edu/~mirabile/Wonderlic.htm) 30 is however still higher - a *lot* higher - than 22. Certainly there have been low Wonderlic scoring QBs in the NFL - and will be again (Booty's was 14!!!). But your thinking is flawed. The day of the neanderthal Qb is gone: if you look at the likes of winning QBs, Tom Brady (33) and Eli Manning (39), in this day and age, you'd better have a pretty smart QB at the throttle. Playbooks, plays, schemes, reads, etc. are all more complex and the QB needs to be the guy who can both think and play. Dan Marino played, let me see, 25 years ago: things were a bit less sophisticated then. (BTW, do you think Favre threw that last intercept because of his high Wonderlic? His strong suit is spirit and Qb savvy, but you never know who you're going to get: gunslinger or hot hand. Compare him with the ultra consistent and very sharp Brady. Case rested.)
