NY-Sox rivalry cited in murder case

Only Ivonne Hernandez knows for certain what was in her mind when, prosecutors say, she sped from a parking lot near a Nashua lounge, turned her 11-year-old Dodge Intrepid toward a group of people on the street, and slammed into a 29-year-old man, killing him. But there's one thing authorities believe about the moments before the 43-year-old mother allegedly rocketed her car across 200 feet of pavement: Hernandez and the people in the group were on opposite ends of baseball's oldest and most vitriolic rivalry. According to the victim's sister, Hernandez got into a fist fight early Friday morning in the parking lot with a woman in the group, and then stalked off to her car. Some in the group saw a Yankees sticker on her car and began taunting her with a familiar chant in Red Sox Nation: "Yankees suck! Yankees suck!" prosecutors said.

Is that a pitcher of the woman with the long hair?

May 6, 2008  07:03 AM ET

Holy cr*p, this is intense. This should be one of the most exciting threads all-day. That woman should go away for a long time, if the true story is as simple as the article says it is...

Blame it on the Shelly Duncan autograph.

May 6, 2008  07:10 AM ET

Her defense was that she figured the people would move out of the way. Honest to God.

Some baseball fans are more hardcore than others, but this is taking fandom too far.

I was talking to a co-worker about this story, and he recommended that they should take her uterus out so she could not procreate. A person like that does not belong in our society, nor should any of her offspring.

My guess is that copious amounts of alcohol are involved.

I got into a heated argument with a dumb Red Sox fan up at Squam Lake NH. So it happens.

May 6, 2008  07:44 AM ET

Um...wow.

The article states she is a 43-year old mother. Your co-worker's recommendation is too late.

Yeah, it's best to get this type before they breed.

lady Deathstrike - You got me on that one. I should have read the article a little better.

With that being said, I feel for the kids now. Alchohol or not, this story is just sick.

She was driven to madness by the belching fumes of her Dodge Intrepid.

May 6, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Well still, it's Yankee fans 1, Red Sox fans 0.

HA!

May 6, 2008  08:24 AM ET

This is one of the most ridiculous news stories I've read in my life, and no suprise it comes from the Boston Globe, the rag of all rags (don't worry the NY Times is a close 2nd).

May 6, 2008  08:26 AM ET

And most of the fights seem to be at NFL games.
