Rangers may bid on Hossa

If the Penguins do not have enough money to offer Marian Hossa, who is making $7 million this season, the Rangers may be in the bidding for him. He is a strong two-way player and seems to be the kind of finisher the Rangers could use on a line with center Scott Gomez. If the Rangers keep him from returning to Pittsburgh, they would take a chunk out of the lineup of a division rival, one that looks as if it will be formidable for years to come.

Be a nice fit for the Rangers

May 6, 2008  07:54 AM ET

If you can't beat 'um, buy 'um.

May 6, 2008  07:58 AM ET

As usual, the Times are expecting the Rangers to sign everybody this summer, but, they won't be able to. Its called a salary cap, and it limits the amount you can spend over the course of a season. If they sign Jagr again, even with a decent discount (unlikely he'll take a discount, but anyway) and fill their defensive holes, then they won't be signing this guy. If they sign this guy, they won't fill their holes on D, and they won't be any better. Let's leave the hockey reporting to a paper that has a clue, New York Times...

May 6, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Hey, PopKing...exactly the same thing I was thinking when I read the headline.

May 6, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I think no matter what happens to the Pens this year they cant afford him and alot of their other players

May 6, 2008  08:56 AM ET

They can stack their lineup all they want, but that team is just steeped in mediocrity for no apparent reason.

May 6, 2008  08:59 AM ET

First Orpik was going to the losers, now Hossa, who next? Crosby? AO? How bout bringing Lemieux outta retirement to play for those bums.

May 6, 2008  09:27 AM ET

They'll most likely be losing Jagr, so this would be a good pick up as long as Hossa doesn't take them to the cleaners. He's a great two way player and any team would be lucky to have him, glad the Pens picked him up.

May 6, 2008  09:36 AM ET

the thing is, Hossa will take them to the cleaners if they persue him. the rangers are mediocre even with all the talent they have but are willing to buy more!

May 6, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Anyone know how much Jagr is currently costing them? Signing Hossa may be a wash as far as the salary cap goes.

May 6, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Can't buy the Stanley Cup. Slats should know better by now!

May 6, 2008  10:00 AM ET

NO NO NO!!!

May 6, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Salary cap-wise, this would be a bad move. The Rangers signed Gomez and Drury to big money long-term deals to build around them. Hossa wants a long-term, possibly $8 million+ a year deal, which would handicap them from getting a puck-carrying, physical defender they need and resigning all of the crucial RFAs/UFAs for this upcoming season and more importantly the 2009-10 season (which includes Staal and some other key players they can't lose).

Back on the farm they are still at least a few more years away from calling up Cherpanov, the other young Russian and Bobby Sang. Hossa is a good two-way player that would make sense for the Ranger's defensive-minded system, but is just not worth the $$$.

The Rangers should let some other team pay out the nose for this guy and re-sign Jagr to two more final seasons to help with the development of players like Dubinsky, Dawes, Callahan, Korporski and such. Get rid of Shanny, Straka, Malik, possibly Prucha (certainly Hollweg next season) to make room for Jagr for a couple years.

May 6, 2008  10:06 AM ET

I agree with OtherOne
The farm has some good young talenty out there, almost ready to go. If the Rangers must go after a free agent, they need to get some defensive help

May 6, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Definitely, mcelt. The farm is sick but too ripe for the picking right now. You know you have problems when Paul Mara is Qbing the powerplay (although I would like him re-signed) and it isn't due to injuries. They can't even move players in front of their own net. It's pathetic.

There are so many overpaid chumps on the Ranger's UFA list this offseason and next, they can easily sign the defenseman they need and keep Jagr for at least two years. Maybe sign him to two years with an incentives-based team option on a third year to keep him 'honest'?

May 6, 2008  10:47 AM ET

But if Jagr is the mercenary thathe is purported to be, then he may leave for more gauranteed money.
What def. guys will be out there this season...preferably under 45yrs olde! We know the Rangers have a thing for older players

May 6, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Off topic, I miss dealing with you Rangers fans after having to now listen to Filth-a-delphians.

May 6, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Yea It'd be nice for Jagr and the Rangers to have something on the table soon so this matter can be taken care of.

No old bums like Rob Blake, please Slats.

This is all hindsight bias since the Rangers really needed a goalie, but have you ever seen the 2004 NHL entry draft and all the players taken AFTER Al Montoya? This is the goalie that was traded for a used puckbag this season.

MIKE "Game Over" GREEN is the name that sticks out the most to me. Like 20something picks after.

May 6, 2008  11:23 AM ET

"Filth-a-delphians?" Pittsburgh is the most depressing city in the US, aside from maybe Cleveland. The suicide rate must be 10x the national average there.

They should ban all the awful "insulting" puns people post on this site.

May 6, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Completely disagree with this and I do not see the Rangers bidding for Hossa. I think the Rangers will go into a "slight" rebuilding mode next year. they will jettison a bunch of the old wood and give the young guys a chance to step up. While they may indeed look for a star veteran I don't see Hossa being the man. There's something about him that seems streaky and I see him being a "Carlos Beltran" of hockey. You'll be frustrated with him, but at the end of the year the stats will look good.
