Suns 'encouraging' D'Antoni to leave

By encouraging (enthusiastically) Mike D'Antoni to seek gainful employment elsewhere (attempting to manipulate salary relief on $8.5 million obligation), the Suns have confirmed their coach is not invited back for the two years remaining on his contract. Depending on his agent's success at selling D'Antoni to the Knicks and Bulls, who have vacancies, and the Raptors, Hawks and Warriors, whose split from Sam Mitchell, Mike Woodson and Don Nelson is scarcely inconceivable, his official firing (buyout?) will occur shortly.

The Suns will surely set next season anyway, so why stick around?

Does this vindicate Mark Cuban and his decision to let Nash go? Jusk asking?

May 6, 2008  08:04 AM ET

Just asking? Time for coffee....

May 6, 2008  08:22 AM ET

I can't wait for that annual "Shaq throws somebody under the bus" sound bite once D'Antoni leaves.

And no, pencilneckgeek, it does not vindicate Cuban's decision, Nash made the Suns into a legitimate contender, it's not his fault they didn't trade for a Ron Artest instead of a fat out of shape Shaq, it's not his fault Amare's stupid arse was suspended for a game after Horry hip-checked him into the scorer's table. The Suns had the misfortune of playing during the era of the Spurs, Mavs and a DEEP Western Conference. I just don't get Nash haters (not saying that you're one pencilneck), bottom line is that Nash makes his teammates better and sometimes that's all that matters, not numbers.

Don't coach the Knicks because that is just a mess and the Bull's players are underachievers.

I'm kind of in the air on D'antoni coming to Atlanta... I love his offensive gameplan, and I know that would fit well with the Hawks youth, but he has no defensive gameplan...

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM GO TO THE HAWKS WITH ALL THAT YOUNG ATHLETIC TALENT.

May 6, 2008  04:18 PM ET

50 or 60 win gets you no where in the West this year. Not even respect. The Suns should go out and hire themselves Brian Hill or someone who's had a 15-60 season, like a Pat Riley.

How long did it take Mike NO-D'Antoni to realize that his run-and-gun style would not win him a championship? 7 seconds or less? ha ha!

There's nothing wrong with having a run-and-gun style... in the regular season. But in the playoffs - you have to be able to adjust to what the other team is doing and you have to be able to counter and cross-counter the opponent's moves.

Mike NO-D'Antoni believed that the only thing he needed to do was keep running and keep trying to outscore the other team. Now, you can accomplish that two ways: 1. Shoot the lights out and basically never miss OR 2. You can play defense, make stops, and then outscore the other team.

There's a quote attributed to Mike NO-D'Antoni.. goes something like this: "The best defensive team is the one with the most points at the end of the game..." - true, true... but if your team is scoring and not stopping the other team and that is also scoring but stopping your team... which team do you think is going to have the most points at the end of the game?

Apparently Phoenix has said, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

The stupidest thing ever done by the Suns was getting rid of Kurt Thomas. If they had just kept him, and had Marion to use as a defensive stopper, and kept Eddie House to nail 30pointers, they would have beat San Antonio! There are a lot of hand me down coaches looking for a job - Dantoni is as good as any of them. Get rid of whoever thought up letting Thomas go.
