Cuban denies yelling at Avery

Mark Cuban has been eerily quiet since the Mavs' season ended, but he finally let his fingers do the talking. He avoided discussing the Avery divorce in any detail, but Cuban gave readers a glimpse of the franchise's future as he sees it. Conventional wisdom is that the Mavs' championship window has closed. Much to the surprise of nobody, Cuban contends that conventional wisdom in this case is a bunch of bull. "And one last word on something. I have never, ever raised my voice to any coach or player on this team. Ever. I've been screamed at. which I have no problem with. I have no problem with someone venting at me or to me, even about me. In fact, if its necessary, I prefer it be to me. Its a sign of passion." C'mon, Mark. Folks in the West End heard you hollering at Avery after the loss to the Lakers. And they heard Avery give as good as he got.

Lets see you coach Mark. Reminds me of the wife when I drive like a banshi....slow down/watch out/why didnt you call a TO?

May 6, 2008  08:09 AM ET

Wuss, didn't even have the guts to fire Avery to his face.

May 6, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Problem is that Avery Johnson is probably going to be the best bet for this team for a while - he taught them how to play defense and how do you help him out? Give him a 74 year old point guard in exchange for all of your young talent, and then fire him when that guy looks like he's wearing Air Cinderblocks against CHRIS PAUL of all people.

Mark Cuban - time to sit back in the owners' seat and do JUST that - SIT.

May 6, 2008  08:20 AM ET

It will be interesting to see how Cuban will try to save the team this offseason because he has no patience at all.

May 6, 2008  08:21 AM ET

Amen C-Smith......could become like Steinbrenner firing Billy 4 times...llol

May 6, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Hey moron, You fired the only guy on the team with nutz!!! Dirk and the others are still looking for theirs. I agree! The window for a championship for this team has closed. Bust it up and start over.

May 6, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Yes, Cuban can build a winnnig team because he is gutsy and impatient with losing.

No, Cuban will never win it all because he is gutsy and impatient with losing.

I would rather be the Nets owner and have a young point than be Cuban and salvage that mess. With the young Portland and Golden States, this team doesnt make the playoffs next year...

May 6, 2008  08:42 AM ET

Cuban may have done Avery a favor; and what if they did yell at each other after a very heated sequence of events? Who cares? Now if they scheduled a match on Smackdown, maybe that would mildly interesting.

May 6, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Gotta agree with you C-smith. The only thing I will say, and I've said it before, is that Avery did not alter his coaching style to fit the talent that he had. I think Avery is an awesome coach and will improve almost any team but even I can't ignore the fact that it was pure ignorance to have Jet bringing the ball up and seeing Kidd in a shooting guard position against the Hornets. I think Avery had Kidd shoved down his throat and he bucked the system and helped the Mavs implode. He made Kidd look 1/2 as good as he really is. Kidd is not as horrible as everyone thinks he is after this post season. He's just that horrible when you play him like Avery did.
Cuban isn't fooling anyone by saying he has never yelled at any coach. Look at his personality and you know this can't be so. I respect Cuban as a business man but that's about it. You take the good with the bad I guess.

One last note - People repeatedly talk about the Mavs (Kidd in particular) being slow and not being able to keep up with CP3. It's really unfair to hang that noose around anyone's neck. CP3 is just that good. I give him props. He is the best PG in the league hands down in my opinion. If they finish off the Spurs I have no doubt that he will show us that the magically Kobe can't even keep up with him and as long as West and others are hitting their shots like they have against the Mavs and Spurs then I see the Hornets as unstoppable. My point is to stop talking about how poor someone's defense is when it comes to guarding Paul. Let's face it, he is a nightmare for the best defensive players in the league, much less an average defensive player.

May 6, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Cubans great for the NBA. Whom else has the stones to take shots at Stern. Unfortunately, the Mavs lack something, which Jason Kidd didn't provide. After a few seasons, players start tuning coaches out. It's the owners perogative.
Hey if Cuban wants to buy the Bucks from our imcompetent owner, I would personally drive him from the airport.

May 6, 2008  10:09 AM ET

At least Mark Cuban CARES about his team. He supports them and is there to cheer them on. Most of the honors are fat cats who don't care about anything except the money. And Mark has done a lot for charity in his area...the team has for the most part been devoid of the troubles facing most other teams off the court. So get off his back. I like his style

May 6, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Cuban is a great owner.... FOR ME TO POOP ON!

May 6, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Cuban likes them furry, Se7en, so watch your backside when you take that poop.

May 6, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Good Riddance.....now Avery can get a real job with a REAL team. Kuban is an ****hole and he just proved it......

May 6, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Avery's the fall guy even though he wanted to get rid of Dirk instead of Devin. Best believe Avery will elaborate on this at a later date. He may as well write a book entitled, "Coaching Dirk and the Rich, Meddling Jerk".

May 6, 2008  11:28 AM ET

You gotta give Cuban props for buying a gutter dwelling team and at least making them a controversial one that made the playoffs a few times!

That plus, I hear he makes a mean cigar!

Wow where did you get these facts from. If he wanted to get rid of Dirk then why did he say he is the hardest working player he has ever seen and emphasize that the Mavs need to get someone to help Dirk because he cant do it alone. You need to check your facts before making some idiotic comment like that. Dirk is a great player but the rest of the losers on this team need to put up or shut up.

May 6, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Cuban gets what he deserves. You can never believe anything he says...And why would you listen in the first place? Avery is the best coach he will see there for a long long time. I am glad he got out of there, and so is he..

Source: Avery requested Dirk trade

The Mavericks' move on Jason Kidd has as much to do with Avery Johnson's dissatisfaction with Dirk Nowitzki as a leader as with Devin Harris' point-guard shortcomings. According to an infallible source, the Mavericks' coach pressed team owner Mark Cuban to deal Dirk after the NBA's MVP came up shamefully small against the Warriors in last season's upsetting first-round elimination, but was overruled.

New York Post

Sour grapes? You're pissed 'cause your team is on vacation after another first-round exit. Prepare yourself for next season, because it's likely to happen, AGAIN.

May 6, 2008  12:54 PM ET

And you want him to become the next owner of the Chicago Cubs ???
