Chargers seek veteran center

The Chargers are concerned enough about Nick Hardwick not being able to start the season that they are targeting veteran center Jeremy Newberry for a possible signing after June 1, numerous sources confirmed. Newberry is an unrestricted free agent, but he would not count against the Chargers when it comes to getting compensatory draft picks next year if they sign him after June 1. No deal is in place, sources said, but the Chargers are the front-runners for Newberry's services.

How did they not come out of the draft with out a back up center? Wasn't there a lack of depth there thsi time last year?

Report Offensive CommentI think it's a smart move. Even though Newberry is injury prone, they only need him for maybe 5 games at the most. You don't want a rookie Center starting your first couple of games this season. There were no really good Centers in this draft other than Mike Pollack from ASU....even he is not that good. Newberry will stabilize them for as long as they need.

Report Offensive CommentLike any year, IMO, you can find a quality player that can be coached to something great in any round...though its generally easier done from drafting an earlier round pick.
Anyway, I just think a team who has serious playoff aspirations not just now, but in the future...works the draft for what they need. And having concerns about a center RIGHT AFTER a draft...just doesn't make sense.

Report Offensive CommentHardwick is only 26...He is the future at Center. They need a Solid guy from Day one. Not a developemental guy that will have to make all the adjustments at the line of scrimmage and pickup the NFL speed in a couple of months. Does that make more sense?

Report Offensive CommentDamn, its the boring part of the offseason. I found this game in another group a few weeks ago. You create a player and sign with a team and games are simulated. The more experience you get, the higher levels you get to and the better your player is. Its pretty fun and it's free. Anyways, if you are interested...
