NBA investigating Hornets fire fiasco

An NBA spokesperson said Monday that the league continues to investigate the incident that delayed Saturday's Game 1. Powerful fire extinguishers required to douse flames in a ring of fire through which Hornets mascot "Super Hugo" jumped during the break between the first and second quarters left a powdery residue on the court. It took more than 20 minutes to remove the residue. The Hornets likely will be fined for precipitating the delay.

Why don't they investigate the end of the third qtr between the Pistons and Magic.

May 6, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Better yet, why don't they investigate the disappearance of the Spurs. Timmy is looking fundementally SOFT.

Just a really really old team. Mavs are bad now, and soon the Spurs will be bad too.

May 6, 2008  08:36 AM ET

I see that this story comes from the San Antonio paper.

Good idea to distract the fans with this trivial mascot stuff.

At the same time, another bush-league incident in New Orleans Arena. I was at a game there once when a mini-blimp dropping 50-dollar bills on the crowd drifted over the court, within 15 feet of Wally Szczerbiak. In the middle of third quarter. Play was stopped then, too.

great point notby. Whats to investigate. The guys pulling the stunt screwed up. How about not lighting fires indoors. I learned that when I was 3.

LOL, now that cracks me up in just how true it is. LOL!

The Spurs are following the lead of the Mavs. I don't necessarily think it is a problem of being an old team to be honest. I think it is a matter of the Hornets peaking while other teams are struggling. The Mavs had TONS of wide open (no defender for miles) shots and they couldn't hit them. The Spurs are doing the same. The Hornets are refusing to give up the middle and making people beat them with the jumper. As long as teams can't make a 15 footer then they will go down as the Mavs did. I give much credit to the defense of the Hornets but you've got to make those wide open shots they give you or you will never spread them to open up the paint.

LOL I was at that game!

I get that they were just trying to hype the fans up, but stomping the Spurs 2 games in a row should be enough for fan excitement. Maybe they should have drug the damn hula hoop away from the court before spraying it, but in the "heat" of the moment who knows what they would have done.

Hopefully we can take one of two in SA so we can cclose the series out in game 5 in the Big Easy.

Old? This is a experieced veteran championship caliber team. And they are getting rode hard and put away wet! Spurs handled the Suns in normal fashion, what happened?

Are the Spurs not as good as we thought or are the Mavs better.... and the Hornets peaking at the right time.

May 6, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Being a huge Spurs fan, it is SO tiresome to hear everyone say they are old. SOMEONE'S got to be the oldest league in the team, right? And aren't they the defending champs? Give a little respect. They are a great team. That doesn't mean they have to win every game. They've made it to the Playoffs 11 years in a row, and not yet has anyone been charged with rape as far as I know. There are some benefits to being 'old'. When they lose, they are called old. When they win, they are called seasoned. Gimme a break. The Hornets are playing great and deserve the credit. And yes, the Spurs need new blood on the team and they know it. Next year they have Ian Mahinmi who I saw play recently in a D league team. I mean, Cassell is older than Horry! Duncan's team just isn't tight, and one man CANNOT carry a team. Chris Paul can't carry a team. he needs his teammates too. And the Lakers? As good as Kobe is, it took until he had a cohesive team to clean up. I'm sick of stupid people mouthing off about the Spurs being old. Of all the things, just give them credit for their 4 championships, and when their team doesn't gel, then they have to bear that burden too. I think there's more to it than just being 'old.

Do they play Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" when this stunt is done

May 6, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Plus I'm cranky 'cause I only got 4 hours sleep. Good thing I don't have PMS too.

May 6, 2008  09:17 AM ET

yes they play Ring of Fire (played) i think they've banned the event

The League doesn't want the Spurs to advance because of a small TV market. Since the Spurs deprived the League of Shaq facing up with Kobe, the League and the refs are going to stop the Spurs from advancing. Now they'll run with the "Young upstart Hornets against MVP Kobe" storyline for great TV ratings before they move on to the Lakers against the Celtics storyline. That will play to the best TV ratings. And TV rules everything because of the money. If you don't believe it, you kidding yourself!

Kinda like having the refs still count the points even though the clock wasn't running in hometown Detroit. Nobody wants the Magic either. It's all about TV ratings folks! ! !

Just look at how the refs are letting the Hornets get overly physical and do anything they want to the Spurs. They're physically riding on the Spurs backs and the refs aren't calling it. This is going to get ugly. Then again, a fight is good for the storylines. Maybe a few suspensions will get the news stories cranking up. It's all about TV ratings folks! It's all about TV ratings folks! ! !

why cant we just get all this crap out of the NBA arenas alltogether.
Ive been to many Cavs games and i cannot tell you how over the top they take all the enterntainment during tv timeouts. i am there to watch a basketball game, not some idiot screaming into a microphone telling me to scream as loud as i can or moondog wont throw a free shirt or mini ball my direction. Please, simplisfy all this nonsense and let the teams play, why does it take over 3 hours to play 48 MINUTES of basketball?!?!

May 6, 2008  10:19 AM ET

ToM,

I suggest you find yourself a big rock to sleep under.

Orlando is a bigger market than Detroit (I can't stand the Pistons). The rivalry between the Lakers and the Spurs is much bigger and a lot more exciting than New Orleans vs. LA.

Two of the last 3 finals series have been between small markets (Det vs. SA) or boring as hell (Cleveland vs SA). The Celtics, the Lakers, and the Knicks sucked for a long time before this season. (Knicks still stink till this very day)

Please save us the conspiracy theory thoughts.

ToM,

I agree...I mentioned that last night after watching a horrendously officiated game going completely against the Spurs. It was ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, the Hornets are a great team and they are playing like one but you really have to watch the officiating...it's just ridiculous.

But either way...the Hornets haven't really done anything then protect their home court. Now if they go into San Antonio and steel even 1 game there then we can say they did something...until then...don't count the Spurs out. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili aren't gonna have bad nights too often.

Incorrect. Nielsen ranks Detroit as the 11th largest TV market. By that measure, Detroit is by no means a "small market" and is closer to a large one. Orlando ranks No. 19. San Antonio is No. 37.

But you're largely right about ToM's TV-ratings conspiracy theories. By that logic, the networks should favor the Spurs over New Orleans, which ranks No. 53.

LSUDYNASTY | 05/06/08, 08:50 AM

Yes, I really think this is the best we can hope for. Although the Spurs have looked vulnerable at times this year, it is easy to forget that they are the defending champions and are the closest thing the NBA has to a "dynasty" right now.
