Alexander to visit with Saints

The Saints will bring in free-agent tailback Shaun Alexander for a visit this week, a sign that they're still in the market for some insurance in case Deuce McAllister is unable to return to form. Alexander, 30, was released by the Seahawks last month after two disappointing, injury-plagued seasons.

Report Offensive CommentIt's amazing how teams drop elite players like Alexander over a bad injury plagued season. Janet Jackson said it best on mentality of the decision makers for pro teams "What have you done for me lately?" I'm not a Seahawks fan, but if I was I'd be extremely disappointed to see such a class act like him leave my team.

Report Offensive CommentHurry up Lovie, Hurry up Jerry, sign Alexander while you still can. Drop Benson and sign Alexander. What is the problem here, why do they not see that?

Report Offensive CommentHe's softer than a baby's bottom, but greedier than a fat guy at a buffet. That's why he hasn't been signed yet. He doesn't run up the middle anymore, takes too long to pick his holes, and runs out of bounds when the defence are coming at him. What team would want that as a feature back? If he's willing to sign for cheap - which I think is doubtful for another month or two, until he gets his eyes opened - and is willing to be a backup, then I don't see any teams looking for his services until the first big injury at RB.
I know I'll be proven wrong here, but I would avoid this guy like it was my job if I was a gm in the NFL right now

He had TWO and even after returning he didn't run like the 2005, 2004, etc. Shaun Alexander. He just didn't hit the holes, didn't want to take many hits...he just didn't run like MVP Shaun Alexander.

Report Offensive CommentPersonally, I think the Seahawks made a great move in finally releasing him from an 8 year deal he signed at the age of 29 which was a bad decision to begin with on the 'Hawks part due to his age compared to number of carries. He has peaked...

Report Offensive CommentBig Ben,
I completely agree. At 30, despite an elusive running style, Alexander was not worth the risk of an 8-year contract. He peaked during his MVP season and should be satisfied as a second-choice back for the last 3-4 years of his career.
Shaun Alexander needs to realize that he is not worth the long term investment of guarunteed money anymore. He is better off signing a short-term contract with plenty of incentives. That way if he has a productive season he will be able to capitalize. He is still a good runner. He just needs to realize that he isn't very marketable right now and should just be patient, work his tail off and contribute to whatever team he ends up at.
My prediction? Chicago, New Orleans or Arizona.

Great point! Even if they don't dump Benson, Alexander would be a good fit and could give Matt Forte a bit more time to develop and learn the offense.

Looks like some Bears fans above don't seem to get why Alexander was released in the first place.
Thank God they're ALL not as stupid as Jerry Angelo!

Report Offensive CommentHe has too good a history not to end up on someone's roster. THe question will be, how can he perform in their practices?
We've seen it before that elite RB's just tank after 30. It's happens fast.
With regards to Regie Bush being a bust...I'm not Reggie fan (as you might have guessed) but it's WAY too early to label the kid a bust because he didn't turn out like Adrian Peterson. If utilized correctly, I think Bush could be a deadly offensive weapon for the Saints, and I think Sean Payton knows what to do. The Saints will bounce back in a big way this year.
BruinsWin! | 05/07/08, 04:36 PM
Report Offensive CommentThe Saints need a banger like Deuce if he can't play. They have very little need for Alexander's talents, especially from what he's shown over the last couple of years. If he were to sign for the league minimum, or signed a contract that was heavily incentive-laden without much front end, maybe.
I just don't see that happening. And I definitely don't see the desire he had back in 2004 when he criticized Holmgren for not giving him the extra carry that might have meant that year's rushing title.
