The Mavericks and Rick Carlisle are inching closer to an agreement that would make him the team's new coach. While no deal is done, Carlisle said Tuesday that both sides continue to discuss the options about him becoming the ninth coach in franchise history. "My agent has returned from Europe, and we're still talking," Carlisle said. "We're moving in a good direction. Things are moving along."

Just make the deal already! What's taking so long?
Everyone knows that Rick Carlisle will be coaching the Mavericks next year.
After all, it being a big-city Texas team, they would want a professional-looking tall white man leading the way, and Rick Carlisle fits the bill.

He would be a good fit and maybe help them turn the corner...

JL -

That coment makes no sense considering so many coaches are former players are african american and - oh yea - their last coach, who was wrongfully fired but probably better for him - I'm pretty sure was a black dude. Maybe he was in facepaint, but he sure fooled us Texans. And he was well liked. doh.

May 7, 2008  09:36 AM ET

So the the window for a championship is closing and the team has an impatient owner. That is never a good combination.

time to blow it up-
I like Dirk & think he's a top 10 player in the league......
but you need to try and see what value you could get for him
while he's still in his prime (turning 30 soon)

Yeah, that's it. I'm sure it has nothing to do with his coaching ability. Sheesh.. What an idiotic statement considering our last head coach was a not so tall black man. I'm assuming you think OJ was innocent and the Michael Vick was only convicted because he is black... Talk about reverse descrimination this day in age.

Hopefully we will get Carlisle. He seems like a good fit for where Avery has the team. I think they will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to make this team a true contender anytime soon. Teams like the Hornets are too good and too young. Maybe a couple of teams will hand over a star or two for basically free so we can feel like LA. It could happen!

jgb-

I don't see them blowing it up this year. If they did then I would be OK with it but I just don't see us getting rid of Dirk anytime soon. It would be great if we could trade High Howard for a big man to post up. Not sure how many people will want him after this playoff series and his openness to share that he enjoys doing illegal drugs in the off season (as if he stops during the year... right).

May 7, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Rick Carlisle is a good coach. But it will be a few years until the Mavs can get back on top regardless of who takes it.

May 7, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Who would want to work with Cuban? He's been handed everything he owns and has no idea about a team process. He should learn from the Yankees. Money does not mean success.

May 7, 2008  11:10 AM ET

Carlisle is the typical NBA coaching retread the somehow always get a job regardless of his track record. In this case, his record is not that bad, but the Carlisle choice is obviously a temporary one!!!!

May 7, 2008  11:13 AM ET

JL-
Avery looks far more professional and clean-cut than the ever desheveled Carlisle!!!

May 7, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Once you have "NBA coach" on your resume, you're set for life. It doesn't matter whether you're a retread or not. Either teams keep hiring you or you work on TV. And it doesn't hurt to have Larry Bird mentioned on your resume.

May 7, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Carlisle is a coach who never got his dues, until now. I just think that no matter who the Mavs bring in, they need a roster overhaul.

O.J. is innocent. Check-out "Serpent's Rising" for proof. We gave up a young promising PG in and a $9-million dollar a year center that never has recovered from those rape allegations. Dallas would've made the deal in a NY minute.

May 7, 2008  12:22 PM ET

At the end of the day, it won't matter who coaches the Mavericks. As long as they remain committed to Dampier, they will continue their one and done trend.

Dude: professional sports is about wins and losses. The skin color of the coach doesn't matter to anyone but YOU. That was an ignorant short-sighted statement. If you don't have something germane to the thread, why not try reading the comments of others, and maybe learning something, as opposed to showing us your ignorance. We've seen it before.

May 7, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Can we stop using the race cards! Talk basketball!???!!!!
Damp is a bench player with a large contract. Still no 5's on the horizen! Where are the at?
jpd and I finally agree on something. Josh could be traded for a high draft pick to find a center or to find a shooting guard younger than 99 yrs. old. I'd rather trade JTerry (if I had it my way).

May 7, 2008  01:08 PM ET

And this coach is all wrong. But I guess we'll have see about that.

Man, that was uncalled for. People should stop using the race card. It's stupid when people start using the race card as an excuse. Even the media uses it so much. There is no such thing as minorities anymore. Certain race has worked so hard for many years to get respect and equality. The problem is that same race is using what it was fighting for and make the other race a minority and a victim.

Dallas should have stuck with Avery. With a 70% regular season win percentage he used a stiff and non-athletic group to obtain that percentage.
