Avery's return up to Rangers
Posted: Wednesday May 07, 2008 07:54AM ET
Forward Sean Avery, fresh out of the hospital after sustaining a lacerated spleen in Game 3 against the Penguins, said that he would love to stay in New York but that his decision would depend on the Rangers' offer. He broke off contract negotiations with the team in February, when the Rangers were not approaching his $4 million asking price.

$4 million? HA! I am NOT an Avery fan at all. I think he is a clown. He wants $4 mil/year but has never had more than 39 points in a season. Giving him $4 mil doesn't help your team be in a position to sign/re-sign guys who actually help you win. He is a circus show

Report Offensive CommentI could give you 4 million reasons why he shouldn't get anywhere near that much.

Report Offensive CommentHonestly, who would pay that ****hole $4 million ?!

Report Offensive CommentHow about the Rangers punch you in the new spleen ya overhyped dumbass?
Field Marshall Sunny Day | 05/07/08, 08:56 AM
Report Offensive CommentThat spleen might have cost him some big coin. He was having a decent playoffs and if he could have (dont kill me i said "could have") kept it up he might of cashed in with a desperate team. I see him back in NY at 2-2.5.

Report Offensive Commentlet him hit the open market then. He knows how popular he is with the Ranger fans, and thinks he can parlay it into a hefty contract, Darcy Tucker style. Except Slats isn't as dumb as JFJ was, and he won't pay that much for an above average role player. He'll get on the open market, get offered $3mil or so, and the Rangers might match it. I don't see any team out there going out of their way to make sure they get this guy, so he certainly isn't going to get blown out of the water with any of the offers he gets. Unless Jersey wants to avoid ever having to play against him again, that is...

Report Offensive Commentgocan, i heard a terrible rumor from a friend who swears by it but won't tell me the source that the Lightning are willing to give him the 4 million he wants. it might make sense being that they need more than just a Cup to enduce fans to buy tickets.
4 million is a lot though i wonder how many years he wants. wish he could be reasonable and settle for a little over 3 he gets injured all the time.
OtherOne81 | 05/07/08, 09:29 AM
Report Offensive Comment$4 million for a forward who can't put up 50 points on a regular basis? He is out of his mind. He needs to go have fun at Vogue this summer and get his act together. He's worth not a dime more than he made this year. I get that his role is to be an agitator, but that doesn't direnctly translate to points on the stat sheet. He needs to suck it up, stop bending at the ankles and stop playing bush-league pond hockey.
Sign a one year extension for cheap and leave it out on the ice. Then ask for more money if you deserve it.

Tampa is going to offer him that kind of $? This just further illustrates that management needs to wake up down there. I do diagree with Pantherfan. I realise that while he doesn't put up huge #s (though for a guy in his role, he's a pretty decent player) there are other contributions a player makes to a team. I do know that the Rangers have a much better with him, versus when he's out of the lineup.

Report Offensive CommentMust be a slow day for T&R as they keep flogging this injured horse to death.
DCruiser | 05/07/08, 10:50 AM
Report Offensive CommentNoone is going to give him 4 million. I can see some teams giving him 3-3.5 though, based on his contributions... (The Rangers were a very different team with him in the lineup). He has a lot of intangible value, and someone somewhere will take the bait. Now, obviously the challenge is taking his circus -like behaviour and trying to avoid his daily distractive behaviours... but, hey, if Dennis Rodman found constant employment and heavy paycheques... it proves that someone will pay.
P.S.- I hate the dude, but I have to admit he does a lot of little things that help his team win.
joec | 05/07/08, 10:50 AM
Report Offensive Commentmcelt, it was just a rumor. IDK if Tampa Bay is that dumb to give him 4 million.
He does have a lot of 'hidden value' in drawing penalty minutes and rattling superstars but when was the last time he played a full season? The Rangers are certainly better with him because he can skate with almost anyone when he is on and is faster than people give him credit.
I liked him on the top line with Jagr, but I think Renney got mad at his little screening tactics on Brodeur and moved him to the second line for Straka for personal reasons. His ice time went way down after that game.
OtherOne81 | 05/07/08, 10:55 AM
Report Offensive Commenthe was helpful with Jagr, because other teams (especially NJ) were so concetrated on stepping on him, that Jagr could get a little done
Spiny Norman | 05/07/08, 11:08 AM
Report Offensive CommentIt might be possible that a team would offer him big coin - to me, with the attention that Avery craves, it would take a big offer to lure him to a small market, lower visibility team - but I don't see it being TB. Feaster must already be gun shy about overpaying guys, having had to bite the bullet and trade Richards to allow his team to survive. I'd like to think that he learned a lesson, not being JFJ and all. Also, if what I hear is right, TB isn't hurting for ticket sales, so this "gimmick" signing wouldn't really be needed. Now Nashville or Atlanta on the other hand...
goCanada! is a happy man! | 05/07/08, 11:12 AM
Report Offensive CommentNo way he gets that much. His medical condition alone is enough to scare off most teams.
cjewart | 05/07/08, 11:39 AM
Report Offensive CommentWhat medical condition? If you mean the spleen thats minor and he will be as good as news very soon.
Peter Goezinya | 05/07/08, 11:43 AM
Report Offensive CommentHe'll be lucky to get 1.5-2 mil.
DurkDiggler | 05/07/08, 11:45 AM
Report Offensive Commenthes an injury waiting to happen and im not sure that he'll be on rangers fans good sides for too much longer. the lightning can take him and his $4 million per year and the rangers can go out and get a more skilled foward like ryan malone
broadway blueshirts | 05/07/08, 11:50 AM
Report Offensive CommentWhat? 4 MIL?
That would be very expensive for a moron-clown.
$2 MIL if you're lucky, yes! With incentive os $50,000 per every new rule the NHL has to create.
